Book excerpt: A scintillating glimpse into the lives of acclaimed writers and artists and their inspiring, often surprising convergences, from the author of Monsieur Proust's Library With the wit and penetration well known to readers of Anka Muhlstein’s previous books, The Pen and the Brush revisits the delights of the French novel. This time she focuses on late 19th- and 20th-century writers--Balzac, Zola, Proust, Huysmans, and Maupassant--through the lens of their passionate involvement with the fine arts. She delves into the crucial role that painters play as characters in their novels, which she pairs with an exploration of the profound influence that painting exercised on the novelists' techniques, offering an intimate view of the intertwined worlds of painters and writers at the time. Muhlstein's deftly chosen vignettes bring to life a portrait of the nineteenth century's tight-knit artistic community, where Cézanne and Zola befriended each other as boys and Balzac yearned for the approval of Delacroix. She leads the reader on a journey of spontaneous discovery as she explores how a great painting can open a mind and spark creative fire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840–1916) seemed to thrive at the intersection of literature and art. Known as “the painter-writer,” he drew on the works of Poe, Baudelaire, Flaubert, and Mallarmé for his subject matter. And yet he concluded that visual art has nothing to do with literature. Examining this apparent contradiction, The Brush and the Pen transforms the way we understand Redon’s career and brings to life the interaction between writers and artists in fin-de-siècle Paris. Dario Gamboni tracks Redon’s evolution from collaboration with the writers of symbolism and decadence to a defense of the autonomy of the visual arts. He argues that Redon’s conversion was the symptom of a mounting crisis in the relationship between artists and writers, provoked at the turn of the century by the growing power of art criticism that foreshadowed the modernist separation of the arts into intractable fields. In addition to being a distinguished study of this provocative artist, The Brush and the Pen offers a critical reappraisal of the interaction of art, writing, criticism, and government institutions in late nineteenth-century France.

Everybody in his work reads: servants and masters, children and parents, artists and physicians. The more sophisticated characters find it natural to speak in quotations. Proust made literary taste a means of defining personalities and gave literature an actual role to play in his novels. In this wonderfully entertaining book, scholar and biographer Anka Muhlstein, the author of Balzac’s Omelette, draws out these themes in Proust's work and life, thus providing not only a friendly introduction to the momentous In Search of Lost Time, but also exciting highlights of some of the finest work in French literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DURING THE DAY BUT MOSTLY AT NIGHT thirty enigmatic pages commentating on the consumption, perceptions, information, predators, violence in the world and my own personal experience of things happening around me. How do I contend with the post-truth climate we reside in? Through language, photographs, and journal entries, I invite the viewer toenter my mind, as I reflect/introspect on this question and unveil these concepts. It is political as much as personal. I return to the scene of a crime, literally with my body, to bring back a glimpse for the viewer through image and language in order to help us make sense of evil, to shine a lighton darkness, to encourage others to seek the truth. I have painstakingly collected a series of headlines from various sources over the past two years up until present day that depict scenes of a crime that have since been forgotten. These include events, names, quotes from victims, times, and dates. I connect these headlines to money and power-an adhesive for predators. These extensively researched topics and the stark photographs that accompany them are a form of evidence, a place in time, a glimpse of someone's past, a blip that received attention for a week, or maybe a day, only to vanish from our consciousness-just like the people they represent. The language depicts realities that have been washed away, sunk to the bottom of the sea, cleansed for whomever committed the crimes-faded and overlooked, effacing the pain of their victims. This truth will wash away like all the others are words that come into mymind when a new crime is exposed or when we see another example of a person or organization being above the law, avoiding accountability. The language of these headlines is the shadow side of our reality; open wounds that have never been healed; fears, paranoias, and experiences.Beyond the easier questions of what, who, and when, I am just as taken by the much more cypherous/cunning/incomprehensible question of how. How often does our perception get groomed, mandated, and conditioned?

Book excerpt: The long-awaited publication of the personal diaries of pioneering American artist Eva Hesse Eva Hesse (1936-1970) is known for her sculptures that made innovative use of industrial and everyday materials. Her diaries and journals, which she kept for the entirety of her life, convey her anxieties, her feelings about family and friends, her quest to be an artist, and the complexities of living in the world. Hesse's biography is well known: her family fled Nazi Germany, her mother committed suicide when Hesse was ten years old, her marriage ended in divorce, and she died at the age of thirty-four from a brain tumor. The diaries featured in this publication begin in 1955 and describe Hesse's time at Yale University, followed by a sojourn in Germany with her husband, Tom Doyle, and her return to New York and a circle of friends that included Sol LeWitt, Mel Bochner, Lucy Lippard, Robert Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Robert Ryman, Mike Todd, and Paul Thek. Poignant, personal, and full of emotion, these diaries convey Hesse's struggle with the quotidian while striving to become an artist.
