Book excerpt: A mysterious locket adds some chilling surprises to a family’s cruise in this spooky tale by the author of the Bar Code Trilogy. Don’t touch anything in The Haunted Museum! It looks like the high point of Samantha’s spring vacation is going to be a glimpse of a cute boy she sees at The Haunted Museum in England. She and her sister, Jessica, and their parents are taking a cruise on the Titanic 2, a replica of the original Titanic, and there’s not even wifi! At least the Titanic exhibit at the Haunted Museum had wax figures and beautiful jewels to look at. But from their first day, Samantha and Jessica notice strange things happening. Their cabin number keeps changing. There are creepy scratching sounds coming from between the walls. And a locket that Jess opened at the museum seems to be . . . following them. Is the locket haunted? Or could it be the ship itself? Are there actors in costume walking about the ship . . . or could they be ghosts? Why is Sam’s sister calling her by another name? Samantha will have to unravel the threads tying her and her sister to the past, or they could go down with the ship! Praise for The Titanic Locket “Weyn’s take on the infamous disaster is wholly original.” —Booklist, starred review “Hair-raising. . . . Weyn keeps unexpected chills coming, nimbly linking past and present with visits by the spirits of Titanic passengers. . . . A quick, jittery read.” —Publishers Weekly “Weyn ratchets up the eeriness . . . and quickly builds to a stormy climax.” —Kirkus Reviews “Told in gripping first-person narrative, this novel features interesting characters and creates a strong sense of time and place, while exploring the mysteries of the spirit world.” —School Library Journal

Book Synopsis Montgomery Ward Catalogue of 1895 by : Montgomery Ward & Co.
Download or read book Montgomery Ward Catalogue of 1895 written by Montgomery Ward & Co. and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1969-08-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tea gowns, bleached damask, and yards of flannel and pillow-case lace, stereoscopes, books of gospel hymns and ballroom gems, the New Improved Singer Sewing Machine, side saddles, anti-freezing well pumps, Windsor Stoves, milk skimmers, straight-edged razors, high-button shoes, woven cane carpet beaters, spittoons, the Studebaker Road Cart, commodes and washstands, the "Fire Fly" single wheel hoe, cultivator, and plow combined, flat irons, and ice cream freezers. What man, woman, or child of the 1890s could resist these offerings of the Montgomery Ward catalogue, the one book that was read avidly, year after year, by millions of Americans on farms and in small towns across the nation? The Montgomery Ward catalogue provides one of the few irrefutably accurate pictures of what life was "really like" in the gay nineties, for it described and illustrated almost anything that anybody could possibly need or want in the way of "store-bought" goods. In fact, in that pre-department store era, it was usually the only source for such goods. Imagine if Montgomery Ward had issued an illustrated catalogue in the days of Louis XIV, or Elizabeth I, or Charlemagne: what insights would we have into the daily life of the "common folk," the farmers and shopkeeper, housewives and schoolchildren . . . what sources of information for historians and scholars, collectors and dealers, what models for artists and designers. In 1895, Montgomery Ward was the oldest, largest, and most representative mail-order house in the country. The brainchild of a former traveling salesman, it issued its first catalogue in 1872, a one-page listing of items. By 1895, the catalogue, reprinted here, had grown to 624 pages and listed some 25,000 items, almost all of them illustrated with live drawings. Montgomery Ward was by then a multi-million dollar business that profoundly affected the American economy; and since it reached the most isolated farms and backwoods cabins, its effect on American culture was almost as great. Now once again available, it is our truest, most unbiased record of the spirit of the 1890s. An introduction on the history of the Montgomery Ward Company and its catalogue has been prepared especially for this edition by Boris Emmet, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins), a foremost expert on retail merchandising. His monumental work Catalogues and Counters has long been recognized as a landmark in the study of American economic history.

Download or read book Where Gods Die written by P. Shankar. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the Land of Plenty where the events of the novel take place, but they are presented in such a way that they indicate worldly happenings. These events have the global phenomena of the so-called Modernity and Progress which left humanity far behind while itself proceeding miles and miles ahead. The story of the novel contains the bunch of events that depict Man, Money and Market. Here money symbolizes the Power and Market the progress. Man is the Common Man who is openly harassed and exploited. The events are mostly set on Satire, which is the backbone of the book. Satire makes the theme extraordinarily effective and appealing. By nature Fantasy makes satire more pleasing and convincing. The novel for that matter pasteurizes the fantasy of various forms depicting different anomalies of the progressive world. Besides Satire and Fantasy one more thing to mention. This novel has a touch of Philosophy. The Philosophy that would not bore but add a dimension to the reader's thinking.
Download or read book The Wanderer written by Graham Dwyer and published by Pustaka Digital Media. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer able to endure the misery of the cold and hunger of self-imposed homelessness on the streets of Woolwich, London, Don plots a means of escape from his depressed desperate plight, one that leads him to commit two brutal murders. After first killing a miserly pawnbroker with a stolen butcher’s knife, he is driven to turn the same weapon on the pawnbroker’s sister when she stumbles upon him attempting to loot her dead brother’s hidden money box. Don is soon apprehended by the police, although not initially for the crimes carried out, but because his own sister has reported him missing. He undergoes a series of interrogations and each time is released, but due to the pain of self-inflicted torture later returns voluntarily to make a full confession. Although he is driven to do this because of profound felt guilt in the case of the murdered pawnbroker’s sister, viewing this as tragic loss of human life, he is morbidly without remorse for the killing of the pawnbroker himself. In prison there are signs of a move towards becoming open to the teachings of the New Testament scriptures; despite this, however, Don is still unable to acknowledge that the killing of the pawnbroker involved actual murder, the act itself remaining for him merely the elimination of a disease-ridden insect from which the world has been cleansed.
