Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook is the ideal companion for walkers who want to explore the western section of Derbyshire's White Peak area. Starting in towns and villages including Castleton, Ilam, Buxton, Tideswell, Hartington and Longnor, these day walks are perfectly suited for year-round trips to the Peak District and are suitable for walkers of all abilities. Across 40 day walks, this guidebook offers a range of routes that showcase the best of the Peak District landscape: rolling green hills rising up to limestone ridges, deep dales with meandering rivers, and limestone caves and pinnacles. There is plenty of history to explore too, with many walks visiting historical sites from Neolithic, medieval and industrial periods. Most of the walks range between 4 and 9 miles and can be enjoyed in 2-4 hours walking. As several start from the same car park or village, many walks can be combined for longer days out. Each walk features clear OS mapping and detailed route description interspersed with insights into the area's history, geology, art and culture, making this a brilliant guide for both navigation and learning about the Peak District.

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peak District of Derbyshire and Neighbouring Counties Definition of the Peak District. "Can yon tell me which is the Peak?" asked a gentleman whom we once found surveying with an unsatisfied expression of countenance the prospect from the Ordnance cairn on Axe Edge. "With pleasure ..." we began. A man who was writing a guide book to the Peak district could surely have no difficulty in pointing out which was the Peak, especially from a viewpoint commanding the greater part of it. A difficulty there is, however, and it is two-fold - natural and artificial. Natural, because except the little pimple which forms the summit of Win Hill and the two or three abrupt little limestone crags rising from the upper valley of the Dove, there is nothing whatever in the whole panorama from Axe Edge to correspond with the Johnsonian definition of a peak as a "sharply-pointed hill." There is scarcely a hill-country in Britain which has fewer peaks than the Peak itself. A more appropriate name would be the "Cop" - a word signifying a rounded hill as opposed to a peak, and actually occurring in one or two instances in or near the district: e. g. - Mow Cop, Wardlow Hay Cop. - It seems to be of the same origin as the Dutch "Kop" and the Latin "Caput." Then, artificially or politically - whichever it be - the geography of the district has got strangely mixed up. The area described in this book includes the whole of the hill - country of North Derbyshire and such parts of the adjacent counties as physically belong to it: - the basins, to wit, of the Derwent, the Wye, the Dove, the Dane, and the Goyt. This definition, however, is purely arbitrary. Neither the Ordnance surveyors nor the local authorities support it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook describes 35 circular walking routes in the Dark Peak - the wilder northern area of the Peak District distinguished by its dark gritstone. The walks range between 4 and 13.5 miles in length (6.5km to 22km), varying in terms of difficulty: some involve steep ascents and descents, uneven ground and pathless terrain, and demand a good level of navigational competence. The book also outlines 5 longer routes (3 linear; 2 circular) of 15 to 28 miles (25-45km) for those wishing to explore the area further, including a classic 'skyline' circuit of the Kinder Scout plateau. Detailed route description and 1:50,000 OS mapping are provided for each route, along with information on nearby points of interest and facilities. Icons of the Dark Peak - such as Kinder Scout, Stanage Edge, the Roaches and Mam Tor - are included, however, the focus is on exploring the lesser-known corners of the region. The routes take in striking gritstone edges, distinctive rock formations, open moorland, steep-sided valleys and hidden waterfalls. The Dark Peak features a wild landscape of sweeping moorland and big skies. Easily accessible from Sheffield, it boasts a wealth of natural, geological, historical and cultural interest - and some great walking.
