He received a prison sentence of fifteen years to life in a state that, at the time, did not parole prisoners with life sentences. Behind bars, Quan continued his downward spiral. This could have been the end of the story for Quan, as it is for many prisoners. But somewhere along the way, he discovered a new path-one that prompted him to commit to self-reflection, truth, and personal responsibility. Sparrow in the Razor Wire is Quan's story of transformation inside a place many see as the end of the road. In his book, he shares the journey of redemption and discovery that led to his ultimate freedom. He found that, no matter the prison, the key to unlocking the door is in each one of us.

Download or read book Ockham's Razors written by Elliott Sober and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ockham's razor, the principle of parsimony, states that simpler theories are better than theories that are more complex. It has a history dating back to Aristotle and it plays an important role in current physics, biology, and psychology. The razor also gets used outside of science - in everyday life and in philosophy. This book evaluates the principle and discusses its many applications. Fascinating examples from different domains provide a rich basis for contemplating the principle's promises and perils. It is obvious that simpler theories are beautiful and easy to understand; the hard problem is to figure out why the simplicity of a theory should be relevant to saying what the world is like. In this book, the ABCs of probability theory are succinctly developed and put to work to describe two 'parsimony paradigms' within which this problem can be solved.

Horror writer Jericho Sands has had a hell of a month. He's endured a bitter break up with his punk rocker girlfriend, learned that his lungs are blacker than a coal mine, and served time in county jail for throwing a United States Congressman in a dumpster. He's heartbroken, sleep deprived and suffering from a debilitating case of writer's block Life is about to get much worse. Somebody from Jericho's past has left a decapitated body on his doorstep. The similarity to methods used in his books, his lack of an alibi and his proximity to the victim all lead the detectives handling the case to quickly identify Jericho as the primary suspect. But being framed for murder is the least of Jericho's problems, because this killer is only getting started. The mysterious executioner known as 'The River City Slasher' has made it clear that more innocent people will be killed before Jericho himself is the final victim. Unable to trust the cops, Jericho is forced to examine the darkest parts of his own psyche to catch a killer, save innocent lives, and free himself from his own guilt. Download or read book Modes of Knowing written by John Law and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might we think differently? This book is an attempt to respond to this question. Its contributors are all interested in non-standard modes of knowing. They are all more or less uneasy with the restrictions or the agendas implied by academic modes of knowing, and they have chosen to do this by working with, through, or against one important Western alternative - that of the baroque. Why the baroque? One answer is that the baroque made space for and fostered many forms of otherness. It involved knowing things differently, extravagantly, excessively, and in materially heterogeneous ways, and it apprehended that which is other and could not be caught in a cognitive or symbolic net. It also involved knowing in ways that did not gather into a single point and knew itself to be performative. As part of a great Western division between rationalist and non-rationalist modes of knowing, the baroque is therefore a possible resource for creating ways of knowing differently - a storehouse of possible alternative techniques. To say this is not to say that it is the right mode of knowing. The book's authors do not seek to create a 'baroque social science' whatever that might be, but instead work in a range of ways to explore how drawing on the 'resources of the baroque' can help us to think differently.

Book Synopsis Creativity in the Bronze Age by : Lise Bender Jørgensen
Download or read book Creativity in the Bronze Age written by Lise Bender Jørgensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity is an integral part of human history, yet most studies focus on the modern era, leaving unresolved questions about the formative role that creativity has played in the past. This book explores the fundamental nature of creativity in the European Bronze Age. Considering developments in crafts that we take for granted today, such as pottery, textiles, and metalwork, the volume compares and contrasts various aspects of their development, from the construction of the materials themselves, through the production processes, to the design and effects deployed in finished objects. It explores how creativity is closely related to changes in material culture, how it directs responses to the new and unfamiliar, and how it has resulted in changes to familiar things and practices. Written by an international team of scholars, the case studies in this volume consider wider issues and provide detailed insights into creative solutions found in specific objects.

Book excerpt: As Nano's journey unfolds it reveals how the steady and alluring presence of God became known to her through the most ordinary of events of her life. Her response was one of wholehearted surrender to the call of the gospel and to walking the path of radical discipleship. Abandoning a life of privilege, position and wealth, she moved to align herself to live and work in her beloved city of Cork, in solidarity with those made destitute. Driven by a burning passion to help Christ's marginalized, she dared not only to dream a better life for them but to make this impossible dream a lived reality. This was the great miracle of her life. At a time when the role of women in shaping society was severely restricted, she lived on the razor's edge, a woman fearless before a tyrannical world.

Book Synopsis Integral Meditation by : Kenneth Sørensen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kenneth SOrensen masterfully shows how the human being is a seven-fold system of energies and offers a variety of meditations for accessing all the colors of this rainbow of potentiality. Integral meditation is an illuminating and wise presentation of the science of meditation. It is a candid spiritual autobiography - a magnificent synthesis of the author's life to date and what he has discovered by consciously treading the path of the Soul." Michael Lindfield - Board President of Meditation Mount in Ojai, California Kenneth SOrensen (born 1962) is a psychotherapist, author and spiritual teacher, and the co-founder of Jivayou.com. He has an MA in Psychosynthesis from the University of East London and is the author of The Soul of Psychosynthesis: The Seven Core Concepts. In Integral Meditation, SOrensen offers a lively and comprehensive introduction to the esoteric philosophy of the Seven Rays (also known as the Seven Rivers of Life), which teaches how we can achieve Self-realisation by integrating and embodying the seven essential energies that underpin the universe. SOrensen explains how each of the Seven Rays can be navigated using a particular type of meditation that must be modified according to the meditator's personal blueprint of spiritual energy. The result is a unique path to the Soul for every seeker. While reflecting with unflinching honesty upon his own spiritual journey, SOrensen shows how the application of tried and tested techniques of meditation can bring inspiration, transformation and spiritual breakthrough. The formula is as simple as it is challenging: the integration of a variety of meditation techniques can result in the manifestation of universal energies that will profoundly change our relationship to ourselves, to those around us and to the universe as a whole. Drawing heavily on the teachings of Psychosynthesis, Integral psychology and ancient wisdom, Integral Meditation presents an approach to the psycho-spiritual journey that can be summed up in the invitation: "Meditate, love and choose freedom every day."
