Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past and the Present, in the Secular and Religious History: Of the Congregational Church and Society of Branford a Semi-Centennial Discourse, Delivered July 7th, 1858 It will be remembered that when God gave his laws, his ordi nances and his promises to the ancient church, it was with the solemn charge to teach these things diligently to the children. The church of God and of his Christ is not a provision for one age, any more than a constitution of civil government is an ordi nance for one age but it is to be continued and preserved from generation to generation to the end of the world, subject to amend ment or alteration only by the great law giver. There are then two things Of which we are required to obtain correct knowledge, to preserve that knowledge and communicate it to the generation which may come after us. The first is the testimony which God has established in Jacob the law which he has appointed in Israel -all the doctrines, the precepts, the promises and the privileges which he has given to the church; all the revealed truths which he has connected with the plan of te demption. The second thing is, the leading providences of God concerning these doctrines, truths, promises, and privileges; whether these providences are those which give prosperity or adversity to the church; whether they relate to seasons of revi val, -to the outpourings of the Spirit and the conversion of Sinners, or the periods of declension or diminution. In a word, the history of the church and the religious state of God's people should be carefully studied and known, and as carefully declared to the present generation, that they may know and understand them, and, in turn, faithfully make them known to their children. Book excerpt: The great flight that brought colonists in the 1600s to what would become New England was a resettlement that had not only a geographical and spiritual impact, but an important historical impact as well. The influences of the settlers' English origins, and the fact that various religious groups inhabited specific areas of New England, strongly shaped American history through the 1800s and beyond. Cedric Cowing demonstrates that there were two Englands, one evangelistic and one rationalistic. In the northwest of the British Isles was a society that was pastoral, westering, otherworldly, and revivalist--in the southeast was another, more established and mercantile. These two strains set the stage and powered the action for the biggest religious event of the eighteenth century--the Great Awakening. The leaders of the New Light in the Great Awakening were the Saving Remnant, mostly ministers with liberal education who retained their evangelical and seeker religiosity. The clearly identifiable regional religious parallels between old England and New are still discernable today and give a new slant to heretofore unresolved historiographical issues. Cowing shows how regionalism influenced the nature of New England Puritanism and how the presence of a strong and persistent link between regional origins and religious behavior led to the inevitability of the Salem witch trials.
