Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. fills in the many blanks in the historical narratives about the Passion of Jesus Christ with a riveting account based on history, culture and his own deep spiritual insights. He brings to life and unifies the many observations, emotions and subtle and not-so-subtle actions that revolve around the person of God the Son as he faces his most tragic and triumphant moment. The author’s unique approach intersperses Scripture accounts with the commentary of an incisive narrator who sifts and judges from the span of hundreds of years. He draws from the obvious as well as the obscure, and finds supernatural meaning in the most mundane actions that surround the suffering Christ. In the hands of this writer, the Lord’s few words, accompanied by the author’s commentary, challenge contemporary believers as much as they did those who first followed in the footsteps of Christ and his apostles. The author was born in 1869 in Lancashire, northern England and educated at the prominent Catholic college, Stonyhurst, which has been the source of many English Catholic politicians, intellectuals and business people. After a degree from the University of London, he was ordained a Jesuit in 1903. He served as archbishop of Bombay from 1919 to 1926 and returned to England to write and serve as a chaplain until his death in 1939.

The Gospels reveal only the barest essentials about the physical sufferings of Our Lord. But in this mind-opening book, Dr. Pierre Barbet relies heavily on his close analysis of the Holy Shroud of Turin to recreate every stage of the Passion with heart-rending precision and detail. The result: a minor classic of spirituality by a modern layman. Dr. Barbet was a devout believer who knew the spiritual value of his findings - and he encouraged priests and pastors to use them: "It is largely with a view to these clerics that I have wished to divulge my ideas, so that they may nourish their devotion to Jesus crucified and may bring it out in their preaching." This classic, with its engrossing and sympathetic medical portrayal of the Passion, has ignited religious devotion in clerics and laymen for over half a century.

Book excerpt: In 1914, Luisa writes in a letter to the now Saint, Annibale M. di Francia: “I am finally sending you this handwritten copy of The Hours of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. May it all be for His greater Glory. I have also enclosed a few pages where I describe the effects and the beautiful promises that Jesus makes to everyone who meditates these Hours of the Passion. I believe that if whoever meditates on them is a sinner, he will convert; if he is imperfect, he will become perfect; if he is holy, he will become holier; if he is tempted, he will find victory; if suffering, he will find strength, medicine, and comfort in these Hours; if weak and poor, he will find a spiritual food and a mirror in which to look at himself continually and so become beautiful and similar to Jesus, our model”.

Viewed simultaneously as scandal and eschatological turning-point the cross of Christ is the cornerstone of Christian faith and praxis. This is not to say that the crucifixion of Jesus has at all times and all places been subjected to a single interpretation by Christian believers. Already in the dawning years of the Christian movement Jesus' disciples understood his death in numerous ways, utilizing a variety of images. This study takes as its primary points of departure the prominence of the cross-event for Christians and the variety of it interpretations. Here we seek a partial answer to the question how earliest Christianity understood the death of Jesus. Originally, this study took the form of a 1985 University of Aberdeen dissertation.

The contributors approach the passion from a variety of perspectives—diversely Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and secular. Their voices differ as well, from the challenging to the comforting and from the academic to the confessional. They address the faithful, the skeptical, and the curious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Passion of Jesus and Its Hidden Meaning shows how every person in the world, whether he realizes it or not, is personally involved in the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ. It was because of our sins, and the seriousness of these sins, that Our Lord underwent so cruel a torture. Using only classic Catholic Commentaries on the Scriptures, Fr. Groenings demonstrates the historical context and spiritual significance of each episode of the Passion of Jesus. From the Agony in the Garden through Our Lord's death and burial, every page of this book is replete with vaulable lessons and superabundance of material for meditation and reflection. Drawing from both the Old and New Testaments, Fr Groenings is able to illustrate the meaning of every event and episode, showing how to apply these lessons to our lives today. Far from being merely an act of unspeakable brutality, the Passion and death of Jesus Christ are shown to be the greatest proof of God's love and mercy to each of us.

Book excerpt: The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by Bishop Goodier, takes the subject of Christ's life from the coming of John the Baptist until his last day before Palm Sunday and the beginning of His passion. The second volume continues where the first left off in Our Lord's life and continues the same original commentary and discussion all the way to passion week. The wonderful thing of Bishop Goodier's narrative is that it does not make use of secondary sources or copious quotes, rather he simply quotes the Scriptures and organizes the teaching of the Gospels into the sequential occurrence of events, as well as showing the harmony of the Evangelists. If you want to know more about our Lord and understand the places he is going to, what he is doing and why, this is the perfect work. The new edition includes wonderful depictions of events from Renaissance art. For more information, visit: http://www.mediatrixpress.com

This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the most significant theologian of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the 17th century, the life and work of Johann Gerhard are known throughout the Western Church. Whether through writing weighty works such as his "Loci Theologici" or devotional books such as his "Daily Exercise of Piety," Gerhard's significance as a theologian has endured across the centuries.Johann Gerhard's concern as a theologian was, above all, pastoral, and this concern is reflected in his numerous devotional books and sermon collections. Gerhard's "An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ" leads the reader through the prototypes and prophesies of the Old Testament pointing forward to Christ's suffering and death. The work is divided into two introductory sermons and five 'acts' (I. In the Garden, II. At the Home of Caiaphas, III. Before Pilate, IV. Christ's Crucifixion, and V. Christ's Burial) for a total of 24 sermons. However, readers will find that this books is far from "just another book of sermons"-Gerhard's profound depth of knowledge of Holy Scripture and his ability to draw together the Old Testament prototypes with their fulfillment in Christ combine to make this work a true blessing.
