Book excerpt: Perilous Question features an eventful, violent often overlooked period of British history. On 7th June 1832, William IV reluctantly assented to pass the Great Reform Bill, under the double threat of the creation of 60 new peers in the House of Lords and of revolution throughout the country. This led to a total change in the way Britain was governed, a riotous two-year revolution that Antonia Fraser brings dramatically to life. Perilous Question is an exceptional work of narrative history, one that truly casts a distant mirror on events today.

This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Great Reform Bill IN spite of recent changes in its letter, and a great and growing modification of its spirit, the Constitution as we know it wears, to all intents and purposes, the shape it assumed in 1832. To parody a famous phrase, that, year is now the limit of constia tutional memory. The passing of the Great Reform Bill takes us suddenly into another air we leave the remote world Of the eighteenth century, peopled by the heroic ghosts Of Pitt and Fox and Canning, for the era of Peel and Palmerston, of the corn-laws and the Crimea. The Old aristocratic system begins to crumble, and the feet of the nation are set in the path that leads to democracy. It is generally known that this mighty change in our polity was not carried through without a struggle, and it is lightly said that the country was brought to the verge of revolution. But the actual facts of the struggle are not well known. When Roebuck and Molesworth wrote, the private letters of the time were not available, and they were unable to check the oral traditions they received. Since their day most of the important documents have come to light, but the story of the Reform Bill has never been fully told. Book Synopsis Democracy and the Vote in British Politics, 1848-1867 by : Robert Saunders
Download or read book Democracy and the Vote in British Politics, 1848-1867 written by Robert Saunders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Reform Act, passed in 1867, created a million new voters, doubling the electorate and propelling the British state into the age of mass politics. It marked the end of a twenty year struggle for the working class vote, in which seven different governments had promised change. Yet the standard works on 1867 are more than forty years old and no study has ever been published of reform in prior decades. This study provides the first analysis of the subject from 1848 to 1867, ranging from the demise of Chartism to the passage of the Second Reform Act. Recapturing the vibrancy of the issue and its place at the heart of Victorian political culture, it focuses not only on the reform debate itself, but on a whole series of related controversies, including the growth of trade unionism, the impact of the 1848 revolutions and the discussion of French and American democracy.

The first Factory Bill was also passed this Session, whereby it was enacted that the labour in factories, of children under thirteen, should be limited to eight hours a day, that persons under eighteen should not be compelled to work more than sixty-nine hours in the week; and the employ ment of children under nine years of age was rendered illegal. The Bill also contained pro visions for the introduction of a general system of education among the children in the manufacturing districts. A motion in favour of vote by ballot was made this year by Mr. Grote the historian, and rejected by 21 I votes against 106.
