Book excerpt: The Palace of Holyroodhouse, in its exceptional setting at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, has played a central role in Scotland's history ever since its foundation by King David I of Scotland nearly 900 years ago. Rebuilt by James V of Scotland, it was to become the home of his daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots, and the scene for many of the most dramatic and tragic events of her reign, culminating in the murder in the palace of her secretary, David Rizzio. Rebuilt again by Charles II after the Civil War, the palace became a showplace of baroque architecture and interior decoration. It was the Edinburgh headquarters of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, a refuge after the French Revolution of 1789 for the future Charles X of France, and from the time of the visit of George IV in 1822 onwards, one of the foremost attractions in the Scottish capital. Today visitors are drawn to the Palace as much for its association with Scotland's past as for its role as The Queen's official home in Edinburgh. The palace also houses a significant part of the Royal Collection, with paintings and works of art on display both within the palace and in the Queen's Gallery. This fully illustrated guide includes an introduction to its fascinating history, a plan of the palace, and a tour through the state rooms, including Charles II's splendid baroque interiors and the hauntingly atmospheric chambers of Mary, Queen of Scots--scene of the famous murder.

Book excerpt: These new, fully revised official souvenir guides, published in partnership with the Royal Collection to mark the Diamond Jubilee, include titles on the magnificent palaces and residences, on the finest working stables in existence, on the largest dolls house in the world and on the enthralling history of the royal line of succession. Written by specialist authors including the curators of the Royal Collection, beautifully illustrated and containing details of the works of art, the architecture, stories of occupants, photographs and plans, each book gives a fascinating insight into these famous sites, their history and contents. The Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen, stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine baroque palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and perhaps best known as the home of Mary, Queen of Scots and as the setting for many of the dramatic episodes in her turbulent reign. Mary was married at Holyroodhouse and witnessed the brutal killing of her secretary Rizzio by her jealous second husband, Lord Darnley, in her private apartments. The Palace served as the headquarters of Bonnie Prince Charlie during the 1745 uprising, as a refuge after the French Revolution for the future Charles X of France. From the time of the visit of George IV in 1822, it became one of the foremost attractions of the Scottish capital. This lavish guide provides a fascinating insight into the history of this spectacular site. He would be the Jacobite Stuarts' last hope in the fight to regain the three kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland. A major new exhibition on Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites opens at the National Museum of Scotland, and tells a compelling story of love, loss, exile, rebellion and retribution. It will challenge many of the misconceptions that still surround this turbulent period in European history. This book has eight specially commissioned essays on the Jacobites and includes a catalogue that showcases the rich wealth of objects in the exhibition.00Exhibition: National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK (23.06.-12.11.2017).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Alison Weir's Mary Boleyn. Handsome, accomplished, and charming, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, staked his claim to the English throne by marrying Mary Stuart, who herself claimed to be the Queen of England. It was not long before Mary discovered that her new husband was interested only in securing sovereign power for himself. Then, on February 10, 1567, an explosion at his lodgings left Darnley dead; the intrigue thickened after it was discovered that he had apparently been suffocated before the blast. After an exhaustive reevaluation of the source material, Alison Weir has come up with a solution to this enduring mystery. Employing her gift for vivid characterization and gripping storytelling, Weir has written one of her most engaging excursions yet into Britain’s bloodstained, power-obsessed past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic portfolio uses elevations, floor plans, and other line drawings by Scotland's first great classical architect to document the high Scottish style of the eighteenth century. It was assembled by William Adam (1689–1748), whose sons were the developers of the "Adam style," and published posthumously in 1812. The elder Adam designed, extended, and remodeled numerous country homes and undertook many public contracts. Vitruvius Scoticus's 160 plates include 100 of his own designs. Unlike the Vitruvius Britannicus books, this volume features plans for many smaller buildings that served as models for American builders and architects of the nineteenth century. Its engravings include images of such stately homes as Mavisbank House, Haddo House, and Fasque House; Hamilton Palace, one of the nation's grandest homes, and Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the monarch in Scotland; and a series of bridges at Inveraray in the county of Argyll. Never before available in an affordable edition, this volume is an essential reference for architectural historians and students. It includes an Introduction and Notes to the Plates by James Simpson.
