Most of these, including all those in the two most important sections (i E diets andcz'reu/arleflersflnd ii T fie Senate of Oxyrkymfius), illustrate the period from Septimius Severus to Constantine; the others belong to the earlier period of Roman domination in Egypt. With a few exceptions, the 189 texts were discovered in 1904 - 6. The decipherment and translation of them had in the main been effected by June, 1915 since then Prof. Hunt's military duties have generally kept him away from Oxford, and the commentary unfortunately lacks his accustomed Share in its composition; but he has made many suggestions upon the proofs. These have also been read by Mr. J. G. Milne, to whom we are indebted for some valuable criticisms on points of numis matics. Dr. J. K. Fotheringham kindly undertook on our behalf some interesting astronomical calculations in connexion with the chronology of the Emperors from Decius to Diocletian, upon which obscure subject the new horoscopes throw considerable light cf. The total lack of rain in this part of Egypt had preserved the papyrus beneath the sand, as nowhere else in the Roman Empire. We hear the voices of barbers, bee-keepers and boat-makers, dyers and donkey-drivers, weavers and wine-merchants, set against the great events of late antiquity: the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and the coming of Christianity. The result is an extraordinary and unique picture of everyday life in the Nile Valley between Alexander the Great in 300 BC and the Arab conquest a thousand years later.

In the other texts the originals are reproduced except for separation of words, capital initials in proper names, expansion of abbreviations, and supplements of lacunae. A reconstruction in modern form of the more complete portions of 1606 - 7 and 1610 - 12 is also given. Additions or corrections by the same hand as the body of the text are in small thin type, those by a different hand in thick type. Square brackets indi cate a lacuna, round brackets the resolution of a symbol or abbreviation, angular brackets a mistaken omission in the original, braces a superfluous letter or letters, double square brackets a deletion in the original. Dots placed within brackets represent the approximate number of letters lost or deleted; dots outside brackets indicate mutilated or otherwise illegible letters. Letters with dots underneath them are to be considered doubtful. Heavy Arabic numerals refer to the texts of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri in this volume and Parts I - XII, ordinary numerals to lines, small Roman numerals to columns. In the case of vellum fragments the terms recto and verso are used with reference to the upper and under sides ofa leaf, not to the hair-side and esh-side.
