Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the prospects for conventionally produced petroleum. This includes crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas produced from accumulations where some commercial production can occur without injection or fracturing. It excludes petroleum liquids produced from tar sands, oil shale, coal, and biomass. It excludes natural gas produced from coal, shales, tight (microdarcy permeability) sandstones, and landfills. In some cases, the dividing line between the conventional and nonconventional is fuzzy, for example, between conventionally produced heavy crude oil and some tar sands or between natural gas production from low and very low permeability sandstones. These, however, are rare enough to make the distinction a workable one in practice.

Book excerpt: Recent events and analyses have suggested that global production of oil might peak sometime within the next few years to the next one or two decades. Other analyses, however, conclude that oil supply can meet global demand for some decades to come and that oil production peaking is much further off. To explore this issue, the NRC held a workshop, funded by the Department of Energy, bringing together analysts representing these different views. The workshop was divided into four main sessions: setting the stage; future global oil supply and demand balance; mitigation options and time to implementation; and potential follow-up activities. This report provides a summary of the workshop including the key points, issues and questions raised by the participants, and it identifies possible topics for follow-up studies. No consensus views, conclusions, or recommendations are presented.

Book excerpt: The Future Supply of Nature-made Petroleum and Gas Technical Reports is a collection of papers that covers various issues and concerns in the world petroleum supply. The materials in the book are organized thematically into sections. The text first covers the world perspectives of conventional petroleum, and then proceeds to discussing the classification of petroleum resources. Section III deals with the conventional oil and gas deposits, while Section IV talks about enhanced oil recovery. Next, the selection deals with gases in tight formations, along with tar sand, heavy oil, and oil shale deposits. The eighth section tackles gases in geopressured reservoirs, while the ninth section details other unconventional petroleum and gas deposits. The last section deals with concerns in technology transfer of petroleum and gas technology. The book will be of great use to researchers and practitioners in disciplines involved in the petroleum industry.

Book excerpt: Energy a Global Outlook: The Case for Effective International Co-Operation discusses the historical, current, and future issues related to the international oil industry and the global energy situation. The book is organized into three parts. Part I provides an economic and political evaluation, including topics such as the historical evolution of the international oil industry; global energy supply and demand balance; and impact of structural changes on the international energy industries. Part II analyses both historical and regional energy scenario, and Part III presents the statistical data. Readers concerned with the status of the global energy resource will find this book a great source of information regarding the matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Hubbert proposed the "peak oil" concept to forecast ultimate recovery of crude oil for the U.S. and the world, there have been countless debates over the timing of peak world conventional oil production rate and ultimate recovery. From review of the literature, forecasts were grouped into those that are like Hubbert's with an imminent peak, and those that do not predict an imminent peak. Both groups have bases for their positions. Viewpoints from the two groups are polarized and the rhetoric is pointed and sometimes personal. A big reason for the large divide between the two groups is the failure of both to acknowledge the significant uncertainty in their estimates. Although some authors attempt to quantify uncertainty, most use deterministic methods and present single values, with no ranges. This research proposes that those that do attempt to quantify uncertainty underestimate it significantly. The objective of this thesis is to rigorously quantify the uncertainty in estimates of ultimate world conventional oil production and time to peak rate. Two different methodologies are used. The first is a regression technique based on historical production data using Hubbert's model and the other methodology uses mathematical models. However, I conduct the analysis probabilistically, considering errors in both the data and the model, which results in likelihood probability distributions for world conventional oil production and time to peak rate. In the second method, I use a multiple-experts analysis to combine estimates from the multitude of papers presented in the literature, yielding an overall distribution of estimated world conventional oil production. Giving due consideration to uncertainty, Hubbert-type mathematical modeling results in large uncertainty ranges that encompass both groups of forecasts (imminent peak and no imminent peak). These ranges are consistent with those from the multiple-experts analysis. In short, the industry does not have enough information at this time to say with any reliability what the ultimate world conventional oil production will be. It could peak soon, somewhere in the distant future, or somewhere in between. It would be wise to consider all of these possible outcomes in planning and making decisions regarding capital investment and formulation of energy policy.

Book excerpt: The availability of oil and gas for future generations continues to provoke international debate. In 2005, the first edition of Resources to Reserves found that the known hydrocarbon resources were sufficient to sustain likely growth for the foreseeable future. Yet the book also predicted that developing oil and gas resources - and bringing them to market - would become more technically demanding. Resources to Reserves 2013 - a comprehensive update to the 2005 edition - confirms these earlier findings and investigates whether oil and gas resources can be produced at a reasonable cost and in a timely manner, while also protecting environmentally sensitive areas. Released amid a boom in shale gas and oil development in North America that is transforming the global energy landscape, the book surveys the cutting-edge technologies needed to find, produce and bring these reserves to the market, and it reviews the challenges on greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuel production. With renewed interest in coal as a potential source of liquid and gaseous fuels, it also looks at technology advances for this fossil fuel.
