Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the True Sect of Buddhism When I was requested by the Society to undertake the translation, the time allowed was so short that I fear the work is but imperfectly done. I have made a free rather than a literal translation; in some parts amplifying the original and in other parts curtailing it, so as to make the work more intelligible to foreigners. I am very much indebted to Mr. E. B. Lambert for his kind revision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outline of Buddhism The object of this book is intended to give the reader an outline of the general history of Buddhism, together with the life of Buddha Sakyamuni and his doctrine in brief. It is but just, however, that I should own here, being far from an original, the bulk of the present volume is largely taken from the several works of older scholars of great fame on this subject, and the reader will, no doubt, also find many similar statements through the writings of some Western scholars. Where I differ from my predecessors in this undertaking is, that I have endeavored to compile the present work in gathering materials considered only as orthodox Buddhism. So the first chapter on the life of Buddha, for instance, is mostly derived from the Northern Buddhist canons, using seldom any of the Southern text. The second chapter on the general history of Buddhism is simply a rearrangement of older texts. The third chapter on the teachings of Buddha is, likewise, a translation of the common canon wildly used among the Japanese Buddhists. The sole aim of my present undertaking, as stated above, being simply to present a fair glimpse of this much talked of Buddhism to the general readers of this continent. If one desires to investigate more fully, I would respectfully refer the reader to those learned works of distinguished Orientalists, such as Max Müller, Oldenberg, Eitel, Beal, Rhys Davids, Childers and Dr. Paul Carus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Buddha The object of this little book is to give the reader a succinct account of an Eastern sage whose doctrine of the Path has been accepted by millions of the human race, and whose influ ence is still felt at the ends of the earth. What is generally understood by Buddhism will be found to differ greatly from the way of emancipation here set forth. And for this reason Unlike all other religions, Buddhism began with out God and without prayer, and ended in be coming a most elaborate system of polytheism with a superstitious multiplication of collects. Up to the time of Asoka, about 250 b.o., it seems to have remained comparatively pure; but by the thirteenth century a.d., when the revival of Brahmanism drove it from India, it had assumed in other countries so many new features as to be hardly recognisable. Nor should this be a matter for great surprise. When an essentially Aryan religion or system of philosophy is transplanted to Turanian lands it is not to be expected that it will remain unchanged. The contrast between the teaching of the Christ and of His apostles, and the Christianity of Rome in the Middle Ages is indeed great, but the difference between the Buddhism of Tibet and the Dharma of Sakya Muni 1s greater still. The history of the faith In all the lands m which it has taken root is far too vast a subject for our present purpose, but a general outline of its rise and fall in Aryavarta. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief survey tells the story of Buddhism as it unfolds through the narrative of the Brahmanical cosmology from which Buddhism emerged, the stories and myths surrounding the Buddha's birth, the Buddha's path to enlightenment, and the eventual spread of his teachings throughout India and the world. Jacob N. Kinnard helps readers understand complex concepts such as the natural law of cause and effect (Karma), the birth/life/death/rebirth cycle (samsara), the everchanging state of suffering (dukkha), and salvation or the absence of all states (Mivana). Several illustrations, together with biographical sketches and primary sources, help to illuminate the extraordinary richness of the Buddhist traditon. "At last, a textbook on Buddhism that integrates new and old methods for telling the story of Buddhism's development in India and its expansion into other parts of Asia; this book is a jewel. Kinnard's skill as an interpreter of material culture in the history of South Asian religions gives him insight into content students of Buddhism should know. Students will appreciate the towering personalities and dramatic choices of the men and women who shaped the story of buddhism in India and Other parts of Asia." Elizabeth Wilson Professor and Chair of comparative Religion Maimi University, Ohio "In an admirably succint fashion, Jacob Kinnard traces the development of Buddhism in India during the first fifteen hundred years of its history there. In so doing he sets the stage for the consideration of Buddhist traditions elsewhere, always attened to the Social, economic, political, and relious contexts in which this development occurred, the author pays particular attention to the lifestory of the buddha and to the evolution of his ongoing presence in his teachings, his relics, his images, and the pilgrimage sites associated with him. All of this is nicely complemented by brief teachings his relics, his images, and the pilgrimages sites associated with him. All of this is nicely complemented by brief biographics of prominent Buddhist historical figures and by a judicious selections of translations of pali and Sanskrit texts. Clearly and engagingly written, this classroom-friendly volume will also be of interest to scholars of religion. John Strong Charles A. I have read many treatises on Buddhism; but I have yet to find the writer who, when expounding the philosophy (as distinguished from the ethical system) of Buddha, teaches as one having au thority and not as the Scribes. The indisputable fact that Buddha himself kept silence with regard to the ultimate realities and ultimate issues of life, shows that the task of interpreting his creed is one for criticism (in the widest and deepest sense of the word) rather than for scholarship.
