Book Synopsis The Other Side of 50 by : Steve Ostrow
Download or read book The Other Side of 50 written by Steve Ostrow and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript that you are reading is not a book in the traditional sense of the word. It is rather a compilation of thoughts and experiences I have had and various treatises that I have felt compelled to write over the last few years. It is because of my desire to share these observations that I have decided to put them together. They all served to codify my thoughts and feelings and convey what I personally believe in areas of health of body, mind and spirit. Because some of these articles were written at different times, you may find certain truths repeated from time to time. Please forgive this and edit them out; it is my feeling that they serve to reinforce that which has helped me to arrive happily at three score and ten. I still refer back to this book as a resource and find its validity for me to be sustaining. If it helps you to have at least one happier day, it will have fulfilled its purpose.

Download or read book The Other Side of Fifty written by Darlene Hesley and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pam Williams has been having her baklava and eating it too. She has Martin Campbell, an attentive, attractive man who loves her with intensity beyond anything she's ever imagined. She has Dave, a caring, softhearted husband who is willing to fly her away to paradise rather than risk losing her. Pam has been fulfilled, delighted and brought to a level of sexual ecstasy beyond her wildest dreams. But – she has also been living a lie – covering her tracks and scheming to ensure her wildest fantasies continue to be a reality. As she navigates between the two men she loves, she must deal with a teenage son facing mental health challenges and a daughter whose own sexuality is burgeoning. Pam and Martin also encounter a young woman, Ruby, who will change both of their lives forever. While The Fifty List was a romp through the carefree, uncomplicated days of Pam's 50th year, The Other Side of Fifty is a story of how one woman faces life's many realities – its intense joys, its undeniable sorrows and its hidden treasures.

Book Synopsis The 50s: The Story of a Decade by : The New Yorker Magazine
Download or read book The 50s: The Story of a Decade written by The New Yorker Magazine and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engrossing anthology assembles classic New Yorker pieces from a complex era enshrined in the popular imagination as the decade of poodle skirts and Cold War paranoia—featuring contributions from Philip Roth, John Updike, Nadine Gordimer, and Adrienne Rich, along with fresh analysis of the 1950s by some of today’s finest writers. The New Yorker was there in real time, chronicling the tensions and innovations that lay beneath the era’s placid surface. In this thrilling volume, classic works of reportage, criticism, and fiction are complemented by new contributions from the magazine’s present all-star lineup of writers. The magazine’s commitment to overseas reporting flourished in the 1950s, leading to important dispatches from East Berlin, the Gaza Strip, and Cuba during the rise of Castro. Closer to home, the fight to break barriers and establish a new American identity led to both illuminating coverage, as in a portrait of Thurgood Marshall at an NAACP meeting in Atlanta, and trenchant commentary, as in E. B. White’s blistering critique of Senator Joe McCarthy. The arts scene is recalled in critical writing rarely reprinted, including Wolcott Gibbs on My Fair Lady, Anthony West on Invisible Man, and Philip Hamburger on Candid Camera. Also featured are great early works from Philip Roth and Nadine Gordimer, as well as startling poems by Theodore Roethke and Anne Sexton, among others. Completing the panoply are insightful and entertaining new pieces by present-day New Yorker contributors examining the 1950s through contemporary eyes. The result is a vital portrait of American culture as only one magazine in the world could do it. Including contributions by Elizabeth Bishop • Truman Capote • John Cheever • Roald Dahl • Janet Flanner • Nadine Gordimer • A. J. Liebling • Dwight Macdonald • Joseph Mitchell • Marianne Moore • Vladimir Nabokov • Sylvia Plath • V. S. Pritchett • Adrienne Rich • Lillian Ross • Philip Roth • Anne Sexton • James Thurber • John Updike • Eudora Welty • E. B. White • Edmund Wilson And featuring new perspectives by Jonathan Franzen • Malcolm Gladwell • Adam Gopnik • Elizabeth Kolbert • Jill Lepore • Rebecca Mead • Paul Muldoon • Evan Osnos • David Remnick Praise for The 50s “Superb: a gift that keeps on giving.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “[A] magnificent anthology.”—Literary Review

Book excerpt: Mike Shayne tackles a baffling case of adultery and murder in the suburbs of Miami It’s the 4th and final day of the convention, and Marvin Blake is ready to go home. Dreading the evening’s festivities, he checks out of his hotel early and heads back to Sunray Beach, longing to see his wife, Ellie, and daughter, Sissy. When he reaches home late that night, his bedroom light is on—and his best friend’s car is parked in the driveway. His wife has been unfaithful, and Blake knows what he must do. He checks into a motel, pulls out the stationery, and prepares to take his life. The next morning, Ellie is found in her bedroom, stark naked and strangled to death. Miami reporter Tim Rourke picks up the story and brings in the only man who can untangle this web of lies: Mike Shayne. A seasoned professional, Shayne may think he’s seen it all, but he’ll soon find that, in suburbia, murder is never what it seems. Book Synopsis Hearing the Other Side by : Diana C. Mutz
Download or read book Hearing the Other Side written by Diana C. Mutz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-13 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Religion and politics', as the old saying goes, 'should never be discussed in mixed company.'And yet fostering discussions that cross lines of political difference has long been a central concern of political theorists. More recently, it has also become a cause célèbre for pundits and civic-minded citizens wanting to improve the health of American democracy. But only recently have scholars begun empirical investigations of where and with what consequences people interact with those whose political views differ from their own. Hearing the Other Side examines this theme in the context of the contemporary United States. It is unique in its effort to link political theory with empirical research. Drawing on her empirical work, Mutz suggests that it is doubtful that an extremely activist political culture can also be a heavily deliberative one.
