In connection with the discussion and approval of the Treaty of Peace with Germany, and in connection with the much discussed League of Nations, it is essential that the government of the United States now determine its Oriental policy. It seems probable that the former policy of the territorial integrity of China and the Open Door, with fair dealing and justice, should be stated anew with a more vigorous determination to give it positive effect. If the policy is to be modified, the change should be made promptly and the world should know it. It is fortunate that this book is written by a citizen of the Far East, a Korean. The people of the United States need to see clearly the view-point of the Orientals. There is little difficulty in getting the view-point of the Japanese. In fact, it is impossible for any reader of the public press to avoid getting the Japanese Government's view-point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans in Eastern Asia: A Critical Study of the Policy of the United States With Reference to China, Japan and Korea in the 19th Century In the 19th Century the issue in American policy in was not the open door. That was never a question. Real issue was whether the United States should follow an isolated a cooperative policy to make sure of the open door. Isolated policy was essentially belligerent? It inevitably led to a pitting of the United States against not one but all of the powers and against the Asiatic states as well. It was the isolation of 1897 following the wreck of the cooperative policy which forced the United States to retain the Philippines, just as the distrust of British an French designs in the fifties had led to the attempt loyal but misguided Americans to seek the appropri the United States of Formosa. As a matter of American flag did fly over the principal port of the island for a year. Likewise today a wreck of the newly established cooperative policy would in the end lead to belligerency, and very likely to still further acquisitions of territory by the United States. Those who scoff at such a speculation will do well to study the past records. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Have We a Far Eastern Policy? As a diplomatist and as an author, General Sherrill does not require to be introduced to the American public. His books are well known to the lovers of a fascinating branch of art and to those who are interested in international ques tions. In the present volume he displays a com bination of the qualities which characterize his earlier writings, a fine sensibility to form and color, and a grasp of great political issues. To those readers who have not traversed the Pacific Ocean and Visited its picturesque islands and Asiatic coastlands, this book will be a de lightful voyage of discovery, and even those who have lingered long in the countries described will deem it a privilege to see them anew through the eyes of so keen an observer as General Sher rill. But the chief value of this volume does not consist in the Vividness with which Oriental life and its conditions are depicted, nor in the narrative of the writer's personal experiences. It is a distinctively personal book, but in an altogether different sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C's of the Twenty-One Demands The purpose of this discussion of the. Twenty-one De mands by Japan upon China in 1915 is to visualize to the Americans the exact meaning of this curious phase of Oriental diplomacy in its relationship to the traditional American policy of the Open Door of Equal Opportunity ln the Far East. We have tried seriously by paraphrasing the Demands to show what they would have meant had they been applied to the United States instead of the Republic of China. Since the chief purposes back of the Conference on Limitation of Armament and Pacific Far Eastern Problems are in the re-establishment of the-doctrine of the open door and to obtain international recognition of the principle of the integrity of China, we hope that this booklet may be of interest in a true understanding of the subject. Other books in this series pertaining to the Conference which have recently been published are, The Shantung Case at the and America's Position on the Shantung Question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of American Diplomacy The present work incorporates substantially the entire text, with few alterations or amendments, of the volume published by the author in 1905 under the title American Diplomacy: Its Spirit and Achievements. The narrative in that volume, however, embraces few incidents that occurred later than 1903. The years that have since elapsed have been marked by important events, some of which are destined to be highly influential in shaping the future course of the foreign policy of the United States. The present work brings the history of that policy down to date. The object of the author in the preparation of the original work, as well as in its revision, has been to set forth and explain the fundamental principles by which the diplomacy of the United States has been governed. Domestic policy and foreign policy are seldom wholly diverse, and foreign policy is in the main profoundly influenced by local interests and ideals. Consequently, just as the internal development of each nation presents some distinctive phase or phases, so we may expect its foreign policy to bear distinctive marks by which it can be identified. Book excerpt: More than three decades after its first publication, Edward Said's groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East has become a modern classic. In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding. Essential, and still eye-opening, Orientalism remains one of the most important books written about our divided world.
