Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization and Administration of Physical Education The development of physical education in America has been desultory always and, at times, even aimless. The manual training movement was forgotten in the enthusiasm over Dio Lewis' New Gymnastics. Catharine Beecher's Calisthenics for women lasted long enough to develop a reaction towards other types of work. Del sarte had its short moment; now it is gone. Too often we have installed the work of physical education with a shout, we have supported it with cheers, and we have seen it dwindle and die without even a tear. It is a pleasure to record a different temper today. School people are serious in their consideration of the matter. Principals, superintendents, and presidents are making plans for modern physical education, after careful study of the needs of boys and girls and the opportunities that physical education can offer to help meet these needs. Two SHAPE America Physical Education Administrators of the Year share what it takes to be an outstanding administrator in Organization and Administration of Physical Education: Theory and Practice. Jayne Greenberg and Judy LoBianco, veteran leaders in the field with decades of successful administration experience, head a sterling list of contributors who have taught at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Together, these contributors expound on the roles and responsibilities of physical education administrators through both theoretical and practical lenses. The result is a book that will be highly useful to undergraduate students looking to enter the field, as well as a resource for administrators in physical education leadership positions who are looking to acquire new skills and innovative ideas in each of the five areas of responsibility covered in the book. Part I covers leadership, organization, and planning. It explores leadership and management styles and presents practical theories of motivation, development, and planning. It also looks at how to plan for the essential components of an effective, quality physical education program. In part II, readers examine various curriculum and instruction models and navigate through curriculum theory and mapping. This section also offers guidance on planning events, including special programs and fundraising projects, and how to build a team and secure community connections for those special events. Part III helps administrators plan and design new school sites or renovate existing ones, and it presents contemporary concepts in universal design and sustainable environmental design. It also offers ideas on how to incorporate technology to meet the needs of 21st-century learners, including the use of social media and robotics in delivering instruction and communication. Part IV explores written, verbal, and electronic communication issues, as well as legal and human resource issues. Administrators learn how to lobby and advocate for physical education, how the legal system affects schools, and how to examine personnel issues, bullying, and harassment. Part V explains the fiscal responsibilities inherent in administrative positions, including budgeting, bidding, and purchasing. It also shows how administrators can secure funding independent of district or local funding, offering many examples of grants and fundraising opportunities with sample grant applications. Throughout the text, special features—Advice From the Field and Leadership in Action—share tips, nuggets of wisdom, and examples of administrators excelling in their various responsibilities. The book also comes with many practical examples of forms that are useful in carrying out responsibilities, and each chapter offers objectives, a list of key concepts, and review questions to facilitate the learning. In addition, the text has related online resources consisting of supportive materials and documents. Organization and Administration of Physical Education: Theory and Practice, published with SHAPE America, offers the solid foundational theory that administrators need and shows how to put that theory into daily practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Program in Physical Education The report of Clark W. Hetherington, herewith submitted, on a proposed "School Program in Physical Education" is very broad in its scope. Beginning with a concise review of the rise of physical education in the public schools, it proceeds to a destructive critical analysis of the attempts that have been made to adapt European methods of physical education to American schools, and thence it passes to a constructive scientific presentation of the problems, objectives, and principles involved in the organization of a school program. Perhaps the greatest contribution made by the author in this report is to be found in his treatment of the primary aims of physical education. He shows how the big-muscle activities must be organized as an essential and bulky phase of child life, and then how these big-muscle activities must be organized in such ways as to secure their inherent values for the development of the fundamental intellectual, emotional, nervous, and organic powers underlying efficiency in life. Mr. Hetherington has had much experience and much success both as a teacher and as a supervisor of physical education. His theories, therefore, have been submitted to the test of experiment in school work and on the playground. They are the conclusions derived from long observation and much experimentation as well as from thought and study. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the History of Physical Education The shore of physical education is strewn with the wrecks of systems and movements, many of them good in themselves, but left to drift when the personal support and enthusiasm of the founder was removed from the helm. It has only been when some great national crisis had to be faced and the minds of patriots and scholars were engaged in the effort to meet it, that systems have been evolved great enough to survive the death of their founder, the test of time and change in their national conditions. This is notably true of the gymnastics of Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Incomplete as systems Of physical education without the addition of games, but logical and accurate in their application to the con ditions they have had to meet, whenever similar conditions have arisen it is to them we have turned for inspiration and instruction, and nowhere was this better shown than in the great war of 1914, where crude masses of untrained and underdeveloped men had to be made quick and accurate in response to command and given that control of their bodies that is the true function of physical education in its highest sense. TO the sincere student of physical education nothing has a more sobering effect than the study of those advances made by the great men who have given their lives to their cause. He finds that most of the theories that come to him as new and startling have been thought before and have been either rejected or put into practice as well or better than he is likely to do, and so if he is a philosopher, he can avoid the inevitable failure of schemes that have been dis carded and adapt from material of proved worth the material that suits his special conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School: Its Function, Organization and Administration Part I deals with the function of the high school. Means cannot be intelligently chosen or wisely used in the absence of clearly defined aims that will actually serve as guides in practice. In the belief that generalized aims do not serve as useful guides in the daily work of the school, the several points of view from which the education of youth Should be regarded have been emphasized and discussed in detail. The work of the secondary school has been viewed heretofore quite exclusively from the standpoint of intellectual develop ment. Physical needs, employment of leisure time, work interests, social adjustments, all need to be taken into ac count in any discussion of the education of youth. These various viewpoints have been given rather full treatment in order to make clear the true function of the high school. Throughout Part I the social needs and interests of youth have been stressed. The needs and interests of girls have not received at the hands of the school the discriminative attention they de serve. Secondary schools, so long exclusively boys' schools, have not until very recently made any readjustments to meet the requirements of girls. In view of this, a chapter has been given to the discussion of the education of girls. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
