Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oration of Demosthenes on the Crown The present edition has received as thorough a revision as the means at my command would allow. The text (which is that of W. Dindorf has been carefully compared with that of the best editions, and with the various readings given in Dobson's edition of the Attic orators. The notes have been almost entirely rewritten, and adapted to side-sections in the text, instead of pages and lines. The side-section; are the same as those employed by Dissen, to whose excellent edition of the Oration I am much indebted inn-many other respects. A short Appendix on the Documents, and a pretty copious In dex, have been added, which, it is hoped, will not be without their use. I have referred unifomly to the Greek School Grammar of K iihner, as most satisfactorily solving, according to my view, the various questions which arise in reading, Greek. The readers of this edition cannot fail to be grateful to the enterprising printers, who have the honor of having first in troduced into this country the elegant Porsonian type in which the text appears. They will have occasion to be equally grateful to Professor C. C. Felton, of Harvard University, under whose critical and tasteful eye all the sheets have pass ed, for the general accuracy and much of the value of the edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oration of Demosthenes Upon the Crown: Translated Into English, With Notes, and the Greek Text, With Various Readings Selected From Wolff, Taylor, Reiske, and Others Subsequent reflection has served to remove the deep impression which Lord Dudley's argu ment had made. It must be considered, in the first place, that even to scholars the experiment is not without interest of trying how far the two languages can be used so as to render in the one the thoughts couched originally in the other; and even to scholars the comparative trial of the structures of the two, their resemblances, their differences, and their contrasts, is very inte resting. Then, if indeed this be not included in the preceding observation, there can no more accurate method be fallen upon for well apprehending the force and genius of both tongues than such a comparative trial. Many things are sure to be thus observed which had previously escaped our attention: nor is it to be doubted that the sense, as well as the diction, of the original, is much more thoroughly perceived and felt after such an attempt. Ican truly say in the present case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Translation written by Daniel Weissbort and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation: Theory and Practice: A Historical Reader responds to the need for a collection of primary texts on translation, in the English tradition, from the earliest times to the present day. Based on an exhaustive survey of the wealth of available materials, the Reader demonstrates throughout the link between theory and practice, with excerpts not only of significant theoretical writings but of actual translations, as well as excerpts on translation from letters, interviews, autobiographies, and fiction. The collection is intended as a teaching tool, but also as an encyclopaedia for the use of translators and writers on translation. It presents the full panoply of approaches to translation, without necessarily judging between them, but showing clearly what is to be gained or lost in each case. Translations of key texts, such as the Bible and the Homeric epic, are traced through the ages, with the same passages excerpted, making it possible for readers to construct their own map of the evolution of translation and to evaluate, in their historical contexts, the variety of approaches. The passages in question are also accompanied by ad verbum versions, to facilitate comparison. The bibliographies are likewise comprehensive. The editors have drawn on the expertise of leading scholars in the field, including the late James S. Holmes, Louis Kelly, Jonathan Wilcox, Jane Stevenson, David Hopkins, and many others. In addition, significant non-English texts, such as Martin Luther's "Circular Letter on Translation," which may be said to have inaugurated the Reformation, are included, helping to set the English tradition in a wider context. Related items, such as the introductions to their work by Tudor and Jacobean translators or the work of women translators from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries have been brought together in "collages," marking particularly important moments or developments in the history of translation. This comprehensive reader provides an invaluable and illuminating resource for scholars and students of translation and English literature, as well as poets, cultural historians, and professional translators.
