Book excerpt: These proceedings report the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Optical Properties of Ions in Solids," held at Erice, Italy, June 6-21, 1974. The Institute was the first activity of the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The Institute consisted of a series of lectures on optical properties of ions in solids that, starting at a fundamental level, finally reached the current level of research. The sequence of lectures and the organization of the material taught were in keeping with a didactical presentation. In essence the Institute had the two-fold purpose of organizing what was known on the subject, and updating the knowledge in the field. Fif'teen series of lectures for a total of 44 hours were given. Five one-hour seminars and five twenty-minute seminars were presented. A total of 57 participants came from 40 laboratories in the following countries: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands; Polatid, Romania, Switzerland, the United Ki~gdom, and the United States. The secretaries of the Institute were: D. Pacheco for the scientific aspects and A. La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting. These proceedings report the lectures, the one-hour seminars (abstracts only) and the twenty-minute- seminars (titles only). The proceedings report also the contributions sent by Prof. K. Rebane and Dr. L. A. Rebane who, unfortunately, were not able to come.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absorption spectra of 12 rare earth ions (Ce(3+) to Yb(3+)) in silica glass were determined at wave lengths of 0.25-5.0 microns using glass of the basic composition 25Na2O.75SiO2 plus 0.24Tr2O3 where Tr is the transition element. The specific peak absorption wavelength, frequency, energy level and vibration energy of the rare earth ions are tabulated. The absorption spectrum of Nd(3+) was also investigated in fluoride, phosphate, borate, and silica glass.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic approach in selecting solid-state materials that offer promise as new lasers with predetermined characteristics is of fundamental importance. Reliable predictions of the energy levels and transition probabilities of a laser active ion in a given host would greatly facilitate this goal. The three-parameter theory of crystal fields is used to derived crystal-field parameters for the first rare-earth series, lanthanides, in CaWO4. The parameters q and eta of the theory describe covalent effects in the host lattice; q represents the effective oxygen charge, and eta represents the effective oxygen-tungsten distance. The third parameter tau represents the expansion of the radial 4f wavefunction from its Hartree-Fock value. Values of tau are found for the ions Nd(3+), Tb(3+), Dy(3+), Ho(3+), Er(3+), and Tm(3+), and are determined for the other rare earths by a linear fit. Energy levels and ground state g-values are calculated using the derived crystal-field parameters.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isolated ions and nanoparticles are well understood, and the quantum mechanics that describes their behavior is well developed. Thus, these objects are ideal as probes for systems whose properties are poorly understood. This thesis is concerned with developing an understanding of the electronic and optical properties of rare earth ions and semiconductor nanoparticles and using them as probes. Particularly, we use what is understood about these probes to remove the effects of well understood processes from experimental data. The resulting processed data contains information about the system being probed via that system's influence on the probe. This thesis presents two experimental studies. The first is the investigation of the presence of localized surface plasmons on a wrinkled gold-palladium surface. We deposit semiconductor nanoparticles on this surface and subsequently measure the optical properties of the nanoparticles to identify signatures of plasmon-nanoparticle coupling. We then discuss this coupling in the context of solar energy harvesting. The second study is an investigation of the geometrically frustrated magnetic phase (spin liquid) of gadolinium gallium garnet. We dope this crystal with a rare earth, trivalent neodymium, which is optically active. We then track the infrared emission spectrum of the dopant for signatures of neodymium/spin-liquid coupling. We then discuss the optical effects measured in the context of measuring and manipulating the spin-protectorate magnetic phase of gadolinium gallium garnet.
