Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opening Address of the Maryland Association, for the Encouragement of Literature and the Arts In his physical and intellectual natures, man is a mysteriously wrought and highly exalted being. But his character is incomplete without another set of faculties. 'he must possess a moral nature by which the physical and intellectual are to be kept in control. He was doubtless created with all his faculties in a state of perfection. God could not otherwise have created him. His work must always of necessity be perfect, and perfectly adapted to the position it is in tended to occupy in the mighty scale of his creation. At his crea tion man's faculties were unpolluted. They were pure, as well as per feet. His moral nature was of sufficient force for the control and regulation of his physical and intellectual powers. In the exercise of his faculties, under such regulation, he was capable of the highest condition of human happiness, and that happiness was in its de gree perfect. It was but a little lower than the happiness of the angels of Heaven, and only inferior to it in the difference between their nature and his. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opening Address of the Maryland Association, for the Encouragement of Literature and the Arts Fellow Citizens, Ladies and Gentlemen: - I appear before you, this evening, as the organ of "The Maryland Association for the Encouragement of Literature and the Arts." I am called upon to deliver the opening address, which I presume is to be a sort of introductory to others which are to follow, and the short time allowed for preparation - a few days - crowded with other duties and engagements, must plead for its imperfections. As the Association contemplates the promotion of Literature, in connection with every department of Philosophy, Science, and the Arts, in the introductory address I am restricted in the choice of a subject. It should set forth, as far as the same is - possible, the objects of the Association. In view of this obligation, I will address you upon Man in his Social, Civil, and Associated Relations; and The Importance of Literature to him in each of these Relations. Man was designed by his Creator to occupy an important position under His authority, and to fulfil an important destiny. He was placed at the head of the living multitudes that inhabit the earth, and directed to exercise control over them. He was created out of physical substance that he might be known as the inhabitant of a physical world, and a spirit was given him that he might operate as the connecting link between the vast throngs of the material universe, and the inhabitants of celestial climes. He was endowed with intelligence for the performance of such duties, as might be assigned him in his place of honorable distinction, but a little lower than the angels who have their dwelling in a higher sphere. His physical form was fashioned from the dust of the ground, and he was made a living soul by the breath of the Almighty Creator, which was breathed into him. The association of material substance with the living principle and mental powers, is a mystery which man will probably never be able fully to fathom; but the association itself is one of the plainest facts that the intellect takes knowledge of. Man knows that his body is composed of material substance, because he is sensible of its contact with other material things; and he knows that he has intelligence, because he takes knowledge of the things around him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature, Vol. 1 The first successful efforts to organize an association in Baltimore, for the promotion of science and litera ture were made in the year 1822. Similar associations had been previously contemplated; some had actually gone into operation, but they soon disappeared after an ephemeral existence. The Maryland Academy of Science and Literature was opened under more favour able auspices. A greater number of persons presented themselves Willing to advance by their zeal the objects and the pursuits embraced within the scheme so that, at already an early stage of its organization, by the spontaneous liberality of some of its members and of other gentlemen, the academy found itself in posses sion of an extensive collection of minerals, and an her barium, the nucleus of a cabinet around which new materials might daily accumulate, and without which no association of like character can expect to hold together, nor can in truth be said to have an existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Third Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1910 We have reached another mile post in the history of the Maryland State Teachers' Association. A retrospect may not be encouraging, if we consider numbers as the only element of growth. It does appear that the Association is not as large, numerically, as it was a year ago; but let us hope that, in all the other essential elements of growth, there has been steady advancement. The only two places which are considered resorts, where there are abundant hotel facilities - Mountain Lake Park and Ocean City - are located in remote corners of the State. The mountain resort is in Garrett County, about three thousand feet above sea level, and it makes a long and somewhat expensive trip for the great majority who attend; Ocean City, in Worcester County, is Maryland's most famous resort; and it, too, is difficult to reach. Last year at Mountain Lake, the enrollment of members was unprecedented, and the question of defraying the expenses of the meeting was an easy problem to solve. It is a matter worthy of note that Garrett County, in whose territory the Mountain Lake Park meeting was held, furnished more than one hundred of the members at that meeting. Worcester County did not do so well at Ocean City the present year, and we must all feel more or less disappointment, when we see an enrollment of about four hundred at the last meeting of the Association. Inasmuch as benefits of a substantial character result to any town or county where the Association meets, would it not be well for the Executive Committee to ask a guarantee of membership fees, when invitations come for the Association to hold its next meeting at a particular place? The attitude of teachers toward this agency of our school system is not right, so long as the enrollment of members in the Association is less than ten percent, of the number of teachers in actual employment. Under the circumstances, these questions naturally arise, and should be carefully considered before the next meeting, viz: I. Is the time when we are accustomed to hold the meeting - the last week in June - the most favorable? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annual Address, Delivered Before the Maryland Historical Society, on the Evening of December 17th, 1866 To show how valuable and extensive are some of these collections, I will only mention the library of the Vatican at Rome, founded by Pope Hilary, in the sixth century. It contained in 1848, besides printed volumes, manuscripts, entirely matchless any where else. Some of these manuscripts go back to the third century, and are therefore the earliest books known to exist. But the best and most reliable mate rials for history, are more liable to perish, and be lost and forgotten, than these works even in manuscript, of the learned of any age. Bradford, Governor of Maryland: Delivered in the Senate Chamber, Before the Senate and House of Delegates, January 8, 1862 Fellow-citizens of the Senate and House of Delegates: The present is one of those occasions, periodically occurring in our political career, that usually excites a lively interest; an interest that may be chiefly ascribed to the fact that every such spectacle seems to call to mind the value and success of republican institutions, in recognizing, as it were, the power of the people peacefully to select and inaugurate their political rulers, by the simple expression of the voice of the majority. The emphasis with which that voice has spoken in our recent election, and the majority so unprecedented in previous political contests, indicate that some question of more than ordinary interest has stirred the popular heart. It is a cheering reflection to every patriotic Marylander that the cause which has aroused this popular demonstration, and united the people of our State with an ardor and unanimity never before witnessed, is the cause now, as ever, uppermost in their affections: of the Federal Union and the National Constitution. To preserve these institutions against the unhallowed efforts of those now engaged in the attempt to subvert them, is the purpose to which the people of Maryland have emphatically pledged themselves in their recent election. Turning a deaf ear to every insidious appeal, calculated to divert them from that purpose, and to the false issues invented to embarrass them, they have made known their unwavering attachment to the cause in which they are enlisted by a vote such as no other cause ever did or can command.
