Born in 1632, Spinoza is one of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment and arguably the paradigm of the secular Jew, having left Orthodoxy without converting to another faith. One of the most unexpected and provocative critiques of Spinoza comes from Leo Strauss. Strauss grew up in a nominally Orthodox home and emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930s. He taught at the University of Chicago and was one of the most influential political philosophers of the twentieth century until his death in 1973. Though Strauss was not an Orthodox Jew, in a well-known essay that prefaced his study of Spinoza, he critically examines modern philosophy's challenge to traditional religion. There he argues that while the Enlightenment had failed to decisively refute Orthodoxy, at the same time, Orthodoxy could only claim to believe its core tenets were true but could not claim to know they were true. Strauss leaves the question at an impasse; both the Enlightenment and Orthodoxy rest on axioms that neither side can fully prove or fully refute. Curiously, Strauss never asks Orthodox Jewish thinkers if his approach to defending Judaism against the claims of the Enlightenment is the same as theirs. This volume poses the question to a group of serious Orthodox Jewish thinkers in an attempt to find out if Orthodoxy has a better answer to the questions raised by Strauss than the one Strauss advanced on its behalf. The seventeen essays in this volume use a variety of approaches, drawing on traditional primary Jewish sources like Scripture, Talmud, and Midrash; medieval rationalists like Maimonides; Enlightenment-era Orthodox sources; Jewish mystical writings like Kabbalah and Chasidut; modern philosophical movements including postmodernism and analytic philosophy; and contemporary Jewish Bible interpretation. While the answers differ, what unites these essays is the willingness to take Strauss' question seriously and to provide "inside" answers, that is, answers given by Orthodox Jews. Much of modern thought tries to square the circle of how to live in a world without belief. The better question is whether it is possible to recover authentic religious belief in the modern world. This volume is an Orthodox Jewish attempt to answer that question, one that no serious person can approach with indifference.

Book excerpt: THIRD EDITION--When the Apostle Paul, who refers to himself as a Hebrew of Hebrews, writes in 2 Timothy 3:16 that "Every Scripture is Yahweh-breathed", he is making a reference to the original Hebrew Scriptures commonly referred to by most Christians as the Old Testament. Those original inspired Hebrew Scriptures were primarily written in Hebrew with small portions written in Aramaic and included God's proper name, over 6000 times. The transliteration of God's proper name, known as the Tetragrammaton, is YHWH and by a majority consensus is pronounced Yahweh. Yahweh's name is used more than 1000 times in connection with the communication of His Word and over 600 times by the inspired writers of the Psalms. A reading of the Psalms, in any translation where the name Yahweh is used, will confirm the importance of "The Name" and an attitude that all who claim Yahweh as their God should demonstrate in their personal relationship and communication with Him. Since the new millennium began, there have been several Bible translations that have restored the name Yahweh to the Old Testament Scriptures. Leading the way in this new trend is the "World English Bible" first published in 1997 and last updated in September of 2016. Using the "World English Bible" as its translation foundation, "Yahweh's Word" has taken this trend one step farther and has also restored Yahweh's name to the New Testament. The New Testament often records Jesus and his apostles quoting from the Old Testament Scriptures. One can easily assume Jesus, the only begotten Son of Yahweh, would have quoted verbatim from the original Hebrew Scriptures. In "Yahweh's Word", Old Testament references and quotes found in the New Testament have been edited, where possible, to be more consistent with the Old Testament Scriptures. This, in turn, causes the name Yahweh to be read within the text of the New Testament in the same context as it appears in the Old Testament. In the Second Edition of "Yahweh's Word", the name Yahweh was restored an additional 1200 plus times in the New Testament. The proper name, Yahweh, replaces titles like "God" and "the Lord" as well as pronouns "he" and "his" when they are referring to Yahweh. The Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB) was used as the primary resource for making this improvement. The Third Edition of "Yahweh's Word", has a greater emphasis placed on the "Way of Yahweh" which is sometimes referred to simply as "the Way". Matthew 3:1-3 refers to John the Baptizer as he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one who calls, Prepare the Way of Yahweh in the wilderness! Make a level highway in the desert for our God." In Acts 9:1-2, Paul was on his way to Damascus looking for any who were of the Way. Later, after his conversion, in Acts 24:14-15, Paul states, "But this I confess to you, that after the Way, . . . so, I serve the God of our fathers, . . . having a hope toward Yahweh, . . .." The reader of "Yahweh's Word" will see the connection between the Old Testament Scriptures and the New Testament Scriptures from a clear and more accurate perspective.

Externally it faced the oppression of Rome and the opposition of an orthodox Jewish majority. Internally the Gospel writers struggled to consolidate a congregation of Jewish converts with stubbornly ingrained Judaic traditions. By reading the Gospels with this historical perspective, we can see the day-to-day trials of the early church, and how the church fathers faced up to the challenges of traditions that contradicted the teachings of the new faith. In comparison to the Jewish tradition into which Jesus was born, one of the most radical Christian teachings was associated with the nature of the human soul and its continuing existence after death. The Old Testament is not explicit about an afterlife, and a firm belief in an eternal soul did not form a part of traditional Judaism. When Jesus spoke of eternal life, this was a challenge to His audience, and even His own followers had difficulty assimilating this concept. Another concept that was perhaps even more challenging for early Jewish Christians was the position of Jesus as One at the right hand of God, and a Spirit that existed from the very dawn of creation. To the Jews this teaching violated the sacrosanct principle of monotheism a principle that was inherited from Abraham and that was at the very center of Jewish consciousness. Between the Menorah and the Cross takes a fresh look at the differences between Christianity and Judaism, examining the teachings of Jesus that contrasted markedly with the orthodox Jewish view. Reflecting on this dimension offers a new perspective on the mission of Christ in the first century. While we are familiar with the clashes between Jesus and the scribes and Pharisees, it seldom occurs to us that the issues at the center of those conflicts were also issues to be dealt with between the church fathers and their Jewish Christian congregations. For while the Jewish Christians had accepted Jesus as Messiah, other points of Christian doctrine were slow to be assimilated. Thus the church fathers struggled to deepen their congregations in the subtleties of the Message of Jesus. But more significant still is the fact that their experience colored the way that they wrote the Gospels, the vocabulary that they chose, and the nuances that they embedded in the text. In other words, the way we read the Gospels today is influenced by the experience of Christians in the first century! Only by reexamining their experience and their historical context can we really appreciate the message in the Gospels. Chapter 1. Jacobs pillow: A scientific materialist reconciles with Christianity This chapter describes the authors early sense of discomfort with Jesus and with Christianity in general. Rebelling against his traditional family religion, he ran the gauntlet from skeptic to atheist to scientific materialist. When finally he became a member of the Bah Faith, he still had not reconciled with Christianity, much less did he feel at ease with the Jesus that he had known through Christianity. The author had to overcome that sense of discomfort by understanding better the milieu in which the Gospels were written, which in turn reveals the underlying intentions of the Gospel writers with regard to Jesus. Chapter 2. From Abraham to Jesus: The building blocks of faith Surveying the broad sweep of Judeo-Christian history from Abraham to Jesus, we find an evolution of concepts and a maturation of faith. Book excerpt: Over the past 10 years there has been a keen interest in Jewish Studies as it relates to Christianity and I wanted to help bring authentic information regarding Judaism to several audiences that will bring each from a near ideologue to ideologues. As I traveled I noticed some people were familiar with terms from Judaism but did not know the meaning of the terms, traditions or protocols. I hope to lay a foundation of Judaism with Christians, media professionals and those who serve politically. There are several compelling reasons to present Judaism to an audience that are interested in the Jewish roots of the Christian Bible. There is an apologetic perspective whereby many Christians have nagging questions about the Bible and even frustrated regarding where to find the actual answers. This book provides many of those answers. God requires all Christians to have understanding about Christianity and the belief system they adhere to. The answers to Judaism as it pertains to our Old and New Testament are not obvious and require a command of Judaism to include the Tanakh and the Talmud that provide answers and explanations of what the Old and New Testaments are really saying. Any person who reads this 179 page book will have a command of Judaism and how it relates to Christianity that is above average and will also have an authentic perspective not a romantic perspective. Christianity without realizing it can push Jews far from them especially Orthodox Jews because we do not understand their scheme of thinking and how esoteric their beliefs are. To connect with Jews one must understand how they think and find the wisdom regarding their beliefs and values. The book is powerful and will provide insight as to Israel and their raison d' etre or the purpose that justifies a things existence. Israel was designed to be a leadership nation to the entire world and is still in birth pains with regards to this God ascribed objective. To give you a hint to some of the conclusions I will share this much with you. God has given every people group a purpose in relationship to the entire world to make a unique contribution. The ancient Phoenicians contributed mathematics for example that benefited the entire planet. The Greeks contributed literature that are still beloved writings of antiquity for the entire planet to enjoy. Israel is the only nation and people group given the two-fold objective to receive the law directly from God and secondly to disseminate God's law to the entire planet. These laws are the only laws that could keep the planet sound and congruent to God's system and His way of doing things. In the midst of this two-fold purpose God chose Israel to bring forth our Messiah. Only Israel was set aside to bring forth Messiah who would save the entire world. If it weren't for Judaism there would be no Christianity. The Christian Old Testament is translated verbatim from the Tanakh or the Jewish Bible in a different sequence but the books are the same. I have given you much from the book already but there is a lot more so enjoy the book and may God answer many of your questions.
