Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One-Man Farm The results at first seemed startling, particularly in view of the aggregate statistics on farm size in the United States. But one-man farms this large are already found in many farming communities. At the same time, we would caution the reader, as has the author, that on e-man farms this large require managerial skills well above average, achievable by only a minority of the present and would-be farm operators. And yet in each community there probably are enough farm operators with sufficient managerial skills to provide a steady competitive pressure for buying or controlling farmland as it becomes available for transfer. This is the most significant explanation of why farms in general are becoming larger. The intended audience for this essay is the general public. Professional agriculturalists should be aware that the figures in the examples are generalized and not intended to precisely depict widely varying individual farm situations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Farm Garden Every farm should have a garden. The garden may vary in size and in variety, quantity and quality of resulting produce, depending upon the tastes and abilities of the individual owners, but any farm is a better farm for having a good garden. The garden is sometimes called a home garden, sometimes a kitchen garden. The ideal home garden, whether it be on a farm or on a city lot, is one that furnishes a desirable variety of products of high quality continuously throughout a season. The need of a kitchen garden on a farm is an urgent one. There is no handy grocery store to which the housewife can phone and which will deliver to her berries and vegetables when she wishes them. The men are generally too busy to drop their farm work and drive to the grocery in town for the needed supplies. If the housewife is expected to prepare many vegetables for the table, she must have, close to the house a garden which will afford a selection of seasonable produce. The cost of feeding the family will be materially reduced, and there will be a more pleasing variety of food offered, when a well planned, well cared for garden is added to the farm. A garden, the plan of which has been thoroughly worked out will, under proper management, give a succession of fresh and canned fruits and vegetables the year round. Probably as much, or more, satisfaction and financial gain can be obtained from an area devoted to the growing of such products as from that used by any other farm crop. But the fact remains that this side of the world's greatest industry is almost entirely neglected by both the farmer and the schools. Professor Bailey says on this subject: In visiting practically every farm in one of the counties of the state (n. Y.) we did not find one man who knew how much it cost him to produce milk or raise any of his cr0ps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Farm, Vol. 1: Detailing the Labors of the Farmer, Steward, Plowman, Hedger, Cattle-Man, Shepherd, Field-Worker, and Dairymaid It is requisite to explain that, by the phrase young farmer, I mean the young man who, having finished his scholastic and academical educa tion, directs his attention, for the first time, to the acquirement of practical farming; or who, though born on a farm, having spent the greater art of his life at school, determines, at length, on following his father's profbssion. For the latter class of young men, tuition in farmin and information from books, are as re uisite as for the former. Those w 0 have constantly seen farming from in ancy can never be said to have been young farmers for, by the time they are fit to act for themselves, they are proficients in farm ing. Having myself, for a time, been placed precisely in the position of the first descri tion of oung men, I can bear sincere testimony to the truth of the di cultice have described as having to be encountered in the first year of apprenticeship. I felt that a ghide-book would have been an invaluable monitor tome, but none such existed at the time. N o doubt it is quite reasonable to expect of the farmer ability to instruct the pupils committed to his charge in a. Competent manner. This is certainly his duty; which, if rightly performed, no guide-book would be required by pu ils; but very few farmers who receive pupils undertake the onerous task of instruction. Practical farming they leave the pupils to acquire for themselves in the fields, by imperfect observation and slow experience, as they themselves had previously done theoretical knowledge, ver few, if any, are competent to impart. The pupils, being thus very muc left to their own application, can scarcely avoi being beset with difficulties, and losing much time. At the same time it must be acknowledged that the practice gained by slow experience is, in the end the most valuable and enduring. Still, a book on farming, expressly written to suit his circum stances, might be a valuable instructor to the young farmer; it might guard him against the difficulties which learners are apt to encounter; and it would recompense him for loss of time, by imparting sound professional information. Book excerpt: First published in 1926, this classic survey, which includes nearly 250 photographs, examines the traditional farming methods of the densely populated lands of China, Korea and Japan and shows how fertility can be maintained over many centuries through conserving and utilizing natural resources. In the Introduction, the author notes: ‘The United States as yet a nation of but few people widely scattered over a broad virgin land with more than twenty acres to the support of every man, woman and child, while the people whose practices are to be considered are toiling in fields tilled more than three thousand years and who have scarcely more than two acres per capita, more than one-half of which is uncultivable land.’ Researchers and scholars in the fields of human geography, regional studies and earth sciences, as well as social and economic history will welcome this landmark study being returned to print.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Agriculture: A Book for Young Farmers Before this can be done we must study the char acter of plants, and learn their exact composition. They are not created by a mysterious power, they are merely made up Of matters already in existence. They take up water containing food and other mat ters, and discharge from their roots, or their leaves, or deposit within their pores, those substances that are not required for their growth. It is necessary for us to know what kind of matter is required as food for the plant, and whence it is to be Obtained; this we can learn only through such means as shall separate the elements of which plants are composed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eleventh Annual Iowa Year Book of Agriculture, 1910 In applying the foregoing definition of a farm for census purposes, enumerators were instructed to report as a farm? Any tract of 3 or more acres used for agricultural purposes, no matter what the value of the products raised upon the land, or the amount of labor involved in operating the same in 1909. In addition, they were instructed to report in the same manner all tracts containing less than 3 acres which either produced at least $250 worth of farm products in the year 1909, or on which the continuous services of at least one person were expended. The enumerators were further instructed to return farm schedules for all institutions which conducted agricultural operations, but to report as the farms of such institutions only the lands which were actually used by them for agricultural operations, Farmer. - A farmer or a farm operator, according to the census definition, is a person who directs the Operation of a farm. Hence owners of farms who do not themselves direct the farm operations are not re ported as farmers. Farmers are divided by the Bureau of the Census. Into three general classes, according to the character of their tenure; namely, farm owners, farm tenants, and farm managers. Farm owners include (1) farmers operating their own land only, and (2) those operating both their own land and some land hired from others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The O. A. C. Review, Vol. 31: February, 1919 Before farming will become the pop ular occupation, the economic condi tions of our country must be readjust ed. 'there is a general dissatisfaction throughout the country, and real dis content with the 'business of farming. Most of our farmers know how to pro duce much better than they are pro ducing. This feeling has, of course, been developed during war times, be cause of the' labor situation, and many have been forced, in their effort to maintain production, to make farming an existence rather than a life. Cir cumstances have occurred during the past year which have enlightened farm ers as to the regard in which they are held by politicians, and they are now realizing that their occupation has been made the political foot-ball in times past. We agree that farm life can be made the ideal life, but not un der present conditions. Were it not for the inherent love of the land, many more would have left the farm long ago. As Mr. E. O..drury said at the recent convention in Toronto I farm for less because I would rather do it, than do anything else formore. I am a one-man farmer, and have all the problems of the ordinary farmer, struggling along with these problems to solve. I am happy in the work. But I know that I am not getting sufficient returns for the time and labor and thought which I put into my farm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of a Farm Boy It is this courage, this steadfastness in the de termination to hold the field for agriculture, that grows larger in my estimation as the years go by. I speak of his work in the past tense, for I too look backward; but I am glad that he is still keen to follow the result Of his labors. It was not then a day for erudition, or for high technical scholarship, but a time for clear faith, homely and direct relations with the people, wisdom in giving advice. From the first years that I knew him he was a philosopher and a forecaster, always prae tical, always driving home the point, always with his feet squarely on the ground. He loved the farm; from the rail fence to the back lot, the trees in the pasture, the woodside, the orchard, every animal in stall or field, the high land and the low land, all were his to walk over, to question, to inspect with care, and to improve. It was one of the delights of his teaching to take his boys to the farm. He was a master in the practice Of observing farm conditions, why the grass was thin here and heavy there, why the weeds came in, why the animals chose the spot on which to lie, how to run the drains, to build a fence, to put up a shed or barn, to paint a building, how to break a horse, how to breed a herd from. A common foundation, how to sell a crop, what the weather meant, how to bring an old field back into good condition. He did not teach some small department of farm knowledge as we do in these days, but the Whole farm and the farmer and the wife and the children and the hired man; and he taught it with a quiet and genial philosophy, Often quaint and always full of good humor. He was the real teacher of the small group, preferring the out-of-doors and the barns and the herds to the formal laboratories. I have never known anyone to make such good educational use of an entire farm and its equipment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
