Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old South Historical Work The series of monographs on American Statesmen, now in progress of publi cation, is an undertaking that is likely to have no slight effect upon the popular comprehension of the inheritance and duties of the American citizen. The educational influence of such books is, in fact, not to be easily over-estimated. Nothing can be truer than the maxim that the genesis and development of a nation are best studied in the lives of its great men, and in the compact and readable volumes which Mr. Morse has edited, the history of whole epochs is skilfully condensed. To young men, especially, they will form a political library of the utmost value. Boston Traveller. Their value can hardly be exaggerated when we remember that all the evils which threaten our government at the present time may be averted by a careful study of the past. As studies of civics in a concrete and interesting form, they deserve the notice of every teacher. The Academy (syracuse). Apart from the exceeding interest which attaches to the story of the lives of these remarkable men, the series is of the highest order of excellence from a literary point of view. Northwestern Journal Of Education. We are glad to repeat our appreciation of the public service which is done by the issuance of this series of political biographies. Boston Advertiser. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old South Work The Old South Leaflets gradually began to attract the atten tion of teachers of history outside of Boston; and ten years ago the publication of a general series was begun, to meet the needs of schools and colleges and literary societies and classes. Every teacher of history from Maine to California now knows, we think, of the Old South Leaflets. They are sold at a price just covering the cost, five cents-a copy, or four dollars for a hundred copies, the aim being to bring them within easy reach of everybody, especially of schools and of those wishing to circulate them in connection with lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old South: A Monograph I was born in and of the Old South. At six teen, after a year under General Lee, I received my parole at Appomattox, and went home to look upon the ruin of the Old South. Whatever is good or evil in me I owe chiefly to that Old South. Habit, motive, ideal, ambition, passion and prejudice, love and hatred, were formed in it and by it. My life work as a man has been wrought under what is called the New South, but inspiration and aspiration to it came out of the Old South. The spell it cast upon my boyhood is strong upon me after more than a generation has gone. It is not the Spell of enchantment. It has not blinded me to bad or good qualities, and after the lapse of a half century and de spite the tenderness for it that grows with the passing years, I think I can see and judge the Old South and give account of it more impartially than one who received it at second-hand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Historical Society Papers, Vol. 1: January to June, 1876 The late civil war which raged in the United States has been very generally attributed to the abolition of slavery as its cause. When we consider how deeply the institutions of southern society and the Operations of southern industry were founded in slavery, we must admit that this was cause enough to have produced sucha result. But great and wide as was that cause in its far-reaching effects, a close study of the history of the times will bring us to the conclu sion that it was the fear of a mischief far more extensive and deeper even than this which drove cool and reflecting minds in the South to believe that it was better to make the death struggle at once than submit tamely to what was inevitable, unless its coming could be averted by force. Men, too old to be driven blindly by passion, women, whose gentle and kindly instincts were deeply impressed by the horrors of war, and young men, with fortune and position yet to be won in an open and inviting field, if peace could be main tained so as to secure the opportunities of liberty and fair treat ment, united in the common cause and determined to make a holo caust of all that was dear to them on the altars of war sooner than submit without resistance to the loss of liberty, honor and pro perty by a cruel abuse of power and a breach of plighted faith on the part of those who had professed to enter with them into a union of justice and fraternal affection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bond and Free: A Tale of the South Upon relating incidents which occurred under the observation of the writer, the suggestion has been frequently made to her that they should be recorded in a book, and placed within the reach of those who are interested in studying the habits of the Southern people before the late war. This volume is presented to the public in compliance with that request, since slavery is now so far removed from us by time that it has become historical. The contingencies of "the peculiar institution" invaded the domestic circle, made children masters and mistresses from infancy, causing them to be reared rulers over their sable playmates, and impressed on their unfolding minds ideas of superiority in. birth, which, as they advanced to manhood or womanhood, qualified them to exercise authority to a degree inconceivable by those raised with different surroundings. That miscegenation was of frequent occurrence is not to be denied; but mulatto children, being held by their darker mothers, were identified with the maternal race; yet there were instances where amalgamation was extended to successive generations, and State laws were enacted liberating those who possessed a certain degree of consanguinity with the Caucasian race. In the slave markets, among which that of New Orleans was pre-eminent, quadroon girls, possessing superior personal attractions, commanded a high price; and in exceptional instances, where they were received into families, and enjoyed advantages of mental and moral education, they became women of intelligence and sterling worth. Our heroine is not a myth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of the Old South: 1865-1915 In the last score of years I have ofteri'been, urged by friends and sympathizers to briggf out as a separate issue my article, The Cree'd' of the Old South, Which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly of January, 1892, and Which attracted Wider attention than anything I have ever written. As this is the jubilee of the great year 1865, the memories of that dis tant time come thronging back to the actors in the momentous struggle, and I am prompted to publish in more accessible form my record of views and impressions that may seem strange even to the survivors of the conflict, now rapidly passing away. To this paper I have added an essay on a cognate theme A Southerner in the Peloponnesian War which was published in the Atlantic Monthly of September, 1897, and Which has been accepted by the eminent historian, Mr. Rhodes, as an historical document. Theseat I call my Sargasso work the Atlantic are repro duced by the kind permission of the Houghton Mifliitio Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sam Williams: A Tale of the Old South Then there were the slaves. Grafting the half-acquired Eng lish on the peculiarities of their native tongues, and following the natural bent of their vocal organs, they had in the genera tions of slavery developed a dialect peculiarly their own. This dialect is all the more interesting because it is passing away. Just as the old-time darkey is soon to become extinct, so his speech will shortly be heard no more. And this is true of all the phases of society which existed in the South before the war. The upheaval has been so complete that the old life is now a memory, and will soon belong to tradition. To aid in rescuing this life from oblivion the writer hopes is not the chief merit of this volume. The rendering of the dialects, both of the blacks and of the po' white trash, as well as the representa tion of the manners and thoughts of the generation gone, or rapidly passing, he hopes will be accorded the charm of useful ness. As a Southerner to the manner born, and having lived among the characters represented, he claims the right to speak. But beyond this he hopes the book, on account of its contents, will be found worthy of perusal. W. S. H. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old South Leaflets, 1886 The Old South Lectures for Young People were instituted in the sum mer of 1883, as a means of promoting a more serious and intelligent atten tion to historical studies, especially studies in American history, among the young people of Boston. The success of the lectures has been so great as to warrant the hope that such courses may be permanently sustained in Boston and established with equal success in other cities of the country. The course of lectures for 1883, which was intended to be strictly upon subjects in early Massachusetts History, but was by certain necessities somewhat modified, was as follows Governor Bradford and Governor Winthrop, by edwin D. Mead. Plymouth, by Mrs. A. M, diaz. Concord, by fr'ank B. Sanborn. The Town Meeting, by prof. James K. Hosmer. Franklin, the Boston Boy, by george M. Towle. How to Study American History, by prof. G. Stanley hall. The Year 1777, by john fiske. History in the Boston Streets, by edward everett hale. The Leaflets prepared in connection with these lectures consisted of (1) Cotton Mather's account of Governor Bradford, from the Magnalia (2) the account of the arrival of the Pilgrims at Cape Cod, from Bradford's Journal; (3) an extract from Emerson's Concord Address in 1835; (4) extracts from Emerson, Samuel Adams, De Tocqueville and others, upon the Town Meeting; (5) a portion of Franklin's Autobiography; (6) Carlyle on the Study of History; (7) an extract from Charles Sumner's oration upon Lafayette, etc.; (8) Emerson's poem, Boston. They were four weeks in fighting their way from London to Lands End, and two months more in crossing the stormy Atlantic. For five days they were enveloped in a dense fog, not daring to move in either direction; a weary time for the sixteen chil dren and their seventy-three elders, who clustered despairingly about the deck. But happily they escaped disaster. The most notable among the passengers was William Goodwin, a man destined to become of such in uence in both church and state that the town still delights to do him honor. During the following year more of Hadley's early settlers came over in the Griffin, and the tedium of the two months' voy age was beguiled by listening to one hundred and twenty ser mons, two being preached on each week - day and three on Sun day. Among the passengers were three divines, eminent both for learning and piety - the Rev. John Cotton, Thomas Hooker, and Samuel Stone. Only the latter, however, dared to show himself on deck until they were well out at sea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irene Liscomb: A Story of the Old South There was hardly ever a more perfect blonde than this Southern girl, with her graceful, self-poised personality. Her brides outfit was all finished; even the last package of toilet knickknacks had been received from Philadelphia, and duly commented on by her nearest friends. The house party had been assembled for two days already. Games, and the ball, which was yet to occur before the departure of the interesting couple, were enthusiastically discussed. In the grand old mahogany room of the large plantation house, the bridal gown had been spread out on the bed for a last inspection of its rich lace, and silken, vapory fabric. The veil was rose point lace; one her mother had worn. It had been manufactured at Venice. "No, no, I cannot try it on. It is bad luck to try on the wedding dress and remove it before being married in it," asserted the bride-to-be. "Dats right, Mis' Rene.
