Book Synopsis Aramaic Daniel by : Benjamin D. Suchard
Download or read book Aramaic Daniel written by Benjamin D. Suchard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the book of Daniel contains world-famous stories like the Writing on the Wall. These stories have mostly been transmitted in Aramaic, not Hebrew, as has the influential apocalypse of Daniel 7. This Aramaic corpus shows clear signs of multiple authorship. Which different textual layers can we tease apart, and what do they tell us about the changing function of the Danielic material during the Second Temple Period? This monograph compares the Masoretic Text of Daniel to ancient manuscripts and translations preserving textual variants. By highlighting tensions in the reconstructed archetype underlying all these texts, it then probes the tales’ prehistory even further, showing how Daniel underwent many transformations to yield the book we know today.

Download or read book Against the Flow written by John C Lennox and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power. It tells of four teenage friends, born in the tiny state of Judah about twenty-six centuries ago, but captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon. Daniel describes how they eventually rose to the top echelons of administration. Daniel and his friends did not simply maintain their private devotion to God; they maintained a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society antagonistic to their faith. That is why their story has such a powerful message for us. Society tolerates the practice of Christianity in private and in church services, but it increasingly deprecates public witness. If Daniel and his compatriots were with us today they would be in the vanguard of the public debate. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Daniel is a literary rich and complex story known for its apocalyptic style. Book Synopsis Hebrew Scripture in Patristic Biblical Theory by : Edmon Louis Gallagher
Download or read book Hebrew Scripture in Patristic Biblical Theory written by Edmon Louis Gallagher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of the Christian Old Testament as originally Hebrew scripture had certain theoretical implications for many early Christians. While they based their exegesis on Greek translations and considered the LXX inspired in its own right, the Fathers did acknowledge the Hebrew origins of their Old Testament and in some ways defined their Bible accordingly. Hebrew scripture exerted its influence on patristic biblical theory especially in regard to issues of the canon, language, and text of the Bible. For many Fathers, only documents thought to be originally composed in Hebrew could be considered canonical, the Hebrew language was considered the primordial language subsequently confined to Israel, and the LXX, as the most faithful translation, corresponded precisely to the Hebrew text.

Book Synopsis A History of the Jews and Judaism in the Second Temple Period, Volume 2 by : Lester L. Grabbe

This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the projected four-volume history of the Second Temple period. It is axiomatic that there are large gaps in the history of the Persian period, but the early Greek period is possibly even less known. This volume brings together all we know about the Jews during the period from Alexander's conquest to the eve of the Maccabaean revolt, including the Jews in Egypt as well as the situation in Judah. Based directly on the primary sources, which are surveyed, the study addresses questions such as administration, society, religion, economy, jurisprudence, Hellenism and Jewish identity. These are discussed in the context of the wider Hellenistic world and its history. A strength of the study is its extensive up-to-date secondary bibliography (approximately one thousand items).
