Book excerpt: Traditionally, the Jewish festival of Pesach, which celebrates the Exodus from Egypt, is a time when famillies gather to participate in a Seder together. This formalised meal has two main requirements: speak about the Exodus from Egypt and ask questions. While writing about Pesach in my upcoming novel, about a gay eighteen-year-old Jew studying in Israel, certain themes kept recurring. Most poignant was the tension between the questions the characters were supposed to ask and the questions that spoke to their experience as outsiders. The story of the Exodus, as well as the way it is recounted in the Haggadah (which details the programme that the Seder is to follow), sets out a vision for what the God of Orthodox Judaism wants both from and for His people. When you're gay or queer or simply questioning the meaning of your own life, this vision not only falls short but can begin to feel like a prison.I ended up writing a Haggadah of my own which follows the fourteen stages of the traditional Seder. It consists mainly of stories about certain characters that relate to each stage, exploring the concepts of freedom, liberation, and purpose. The Official Jewfro Genius Haggadah will be most relatable to readers with Orthodox Jewish backgrounds, but the themes are universal. We were all raised in one system or another, into which some people seem to fit naturally while others are forced to either compromise or find a safe way out. Even if you never had to grapple with your identity in this system, no person is born with ready-made beliefs or practices and every single one of us has questioned to some extent. The contents of this Haggadah challenge traditional Jewish and religious thought, but this is not intended as an academic or intellectual document. This is all story, reflecting on characters and experiences which resonate regardless of where you stand in relation to religion.

Book excerpt: A captivating new thriller in the Wakeland detective series that explores the depths of Vancouver’s criminal underworld. Caught between the grimy and glittering sides of Vancouver’s streets, private investigator Dave Wakeland tries to keep his head down at the elite security firm he owns with partner Jeff Chen. But when masked men and women storm an ordinary-looking office building in Chinatown, leaving a trail of carnage, Wakeland finds himself caught up in a mystery that won’t let him go, as hard as he tries to elude it. The police have a vested interest in finding the shooters, and so does the leader of the Exiles motorcycle gang. Both want Wakeland’s help. The deeper he investigates, the more connections he uncovers: to a reclusive millionaire with ties to organized crime, an international security company with a sinister reputation, and a high-ranking police officer who seems to have a personal connection to the case. When the shooters themselves start turning up dead, Wakeland realizes the only way to guarantee his own safety, and that of the people he loves, is by finding out who hired the shooters and why. What Wakeland uncovers are secrets no one wants known—a botched undercover operation, an ambitious gangster and a double-crossing killer who used the shooting to cover up another crime. With a setup like this, anything can go wrong, and does. Skill and luck are needed for Wakeland and Chen to emerge with the killers, the money and their own lives.

Book excerpt: With this Passover Haggadah, Elie Wiesel and his friend Mark Podwal invite you to join them for the Passover Seder -- the most festive event of the Jewish calendar. Read each year at the Seder table, the Haggadah recounts the miraculous tale of the liberation of the Children of Israel from slavery in Egypt, with a celebration of prayer, ritual, and song. Wiesel and Podwal guide you through the Haggadah and share their understanding and faith in a special illustrated edition that will be treasured for years to come. Accompanying the traditional Haggadah text (which appears here in an accessible new translation) are Elie Wiesel's poetic interpretations, reminiscences, and instructive retellings of ancient legends. The Nobel laureate interweaves past and present as the symbolism of the Seder is explored. Wiesel's commentaries may be read aloud in their entirety or selected passages may be read each year to illuminate the timeless message of this beloved book of redemption. This volume is enhanced by more than fifty original drawings by Mark Podwal, the artist whom Cynthia Ozick has called a "genius of metaphor through line." Podwal's work not only complements the traditional Haggadah text, as well as Wiesel's poetic voice, but also serves as commentary unto itself. The drawings, with their fresh juxtapositions of insight and revelation, are an innovative contribution to the long tradition of Haggadah illustration.
