Their story is now brought vividly to life in these photographs and stories. It is offered not only for history buffs but also for the thousands of current and past National Guard members, families, friends, and neighbors touched by their service to state and nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Washington State National Guard has a long history, but it has only existed continuously since the 1880s. Until the Spanish-American War, the Guard served as a police force, but under Adjutant General James A. Drain, the focus of the Guard shifted toward a military mission. The periond from 1901 to 1917 was very important in the evolution of the Washington National Guard to a modern force. From 1901 to 1906 Drain initiated reforms at the state level aimed at transforming the Guard into a proficient military force. These reforms preceded action at the national level. When the Dick Act was passed in 1903, the Washington National Guard was already in compliance with federal regulations. The permanence of Drain's reforms was tested during the years 1906 to 1909. The Guard was hurt by Adjutant General Ortis Hamilton's actions--embezzling $37,000. His successor, George Lamping, was unable to control Guard officers and a factional fight erupted. At the same time the Guard expanded, forming coast artillery and naval militia units. An illegal activation occurred in Spokane, a move condemned by Guard leaders which demonstrated their reluctance to become involved in police activities.Between 1911 to 1915 the Guard reached its peak efficiency, despite manpower and fiscal woes. When called upon to mobilize in 1916, it did so at full war strength. The Guard continued to grow, as it met War Department requirements. In 1917 it was federalized, and its units broken up to provide replacements for Guard and regular units in Europe. This book is primarily based on the Governors' Papers housed at the Washington State Archives in Olympia, Washington. It is also based in part on the Records of the Military Department in the State Archives. The Adjutant Generals' Biennial Reports were used extensively, with contemporary newspaper accounts filling in the gaps. Published War and Navy Department reports provided a critical look at the efficiency of the Guard. Secondary sources were used primarily for background information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the storm clouds of a world war gathered in the spring of 1941, Maj. G. Robert Dodson said, "We've got people, we've got a place, and we're ready!" Oregonians responded to the call to arms as the United States prepared for the coming conflict. In April 1941, the Oregon National Guard's 123rd Observation Squadron became the state's first aviation unit and pioneered Oregon military aviation into the postwar Oregon Air National Guard (ORANG). In the 70 years since its start, the citizen airmen of the ORANG have served their community, state, and nation from locations in Oregon, throughout the United States, and worldwide. They stand ready today to answer the call of duty, no matter when it comes.

Book excerpt: Bloodstained Sands tells the untold story of the men who stormed beaches around the globe during World War II, from the Sword and Juno Beaches on D-Day to the sands of Iwo Jima. For the men who served in America's Amphibious Forces during World War II, the conflict was an unceasing series of D-Days. They were responsible for putting men ashore in more than 200 landings throughout the conflict, most against well-entrenched enemy positions. Bloodstained Sands: US Amphibious Operations in World War II tells the story of these forgotten men for the first time, tracing their operational history from Guadalcanal to Casablanca, Sicily, Normandy, Iwo Jima and finally Okinawa. The men's stories are told in their own voices, with fascinating accounts from Underwater Demolition Teams, Attack Transport crews and many other unsung heroes of World War II. First-hand interviews, entries from personal diaries and Action Reports create a unique history, perfectly complemented by historic illustrations and detailed maps. These are timeless tales of determination, sacrifice, and triumph of the human spirit - tales of US Amphibious Forces that for too long have gone forgotten and untold.

This book was released on 1992-08-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about the many achievements of African American guardsmen in U.S. history from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. This detailed account thus fills an important gap in our knowledge about the establishment of African American militias in 1877 and their service in wartime and peacetime until the integration of the National Guard in 1950. This careful study of extensive primary and secondary sources is intended for military historians and for all who want to know more about African American contributions to the defense of our nation. Following a short introduction providing some historical background, the study launches into a description of the establishment of African American militia organizations in and about 1877 and their involvement in the Spanish American War and in quelling civil disturbances and disasters up to 1914. The history deals next with the service of African American guardsmen units in World War I, their work in the years between the wars, and their involvement in World War II. The story ends with a description of the initial reorganization of these units and their integration into the National Guard in 1949 and 1950. A lengthy bibliography of primary and secondary sources is useful as well in pointing to the role of African American militias and guardsmen in the history of this important period.
