Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed history of the Bilingual Education Program in the Northern Territory of Australia. This ambitious and innovative program began in 1973 and at different times it operated in English and 19 Aboriginal languages in 29 very remote schools. The book draws together the grassroots perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous practitioners and researchers. Each chapter is based on rich practitioner experience, capturing bottom-up aspirations, achievements and reflections on this innovative, yet largely undocumented language and education program. The volume also makes use of a significant collection of ‘grey literature’ documents to trace the history of the program. An ethnographic approach has been used to integrate practitioner accounts into the contexts of broader social and political forces, education policy decisions and on-the-ground actions. Language in education policy is viewed at multiple, intersecting levels: from the interactions of individuals, communities of practice and bureaucracy, to national and global forces. The book offers valuable insights as it examines in detail the policy settings that helped and hindered bilingual education in the context of minority language rights in Australia and elsewhere.

These changes often mirror the Criminal Code (Cth), and have completely rewritten many of the NT Code's most significant provisions, including the law of murder, rape, and many serious offences against the person. The book covers procedure and all the major offences, together with public order offences and sentencing. This guide will lead you to the Northern Territory's best birdwatching areas and help you find the birds. It is designed to be used in conjunction with one of the Australian field identification guides. The book has four main sections: habitats, areas, special birds and a checklist. The text does not discuss every bird likely to be found in every area, instead it points out interesting species found at each site. The special birds section covers birds considered to be special to the Northern Territory and includes tips on finding the birds and local identification hints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughter of the Territory is the amazing life story of Jacqueline Hammar. Born in Darwin in 1929, Jacqueline's childhood was spent in a succession of bush towns before she was sent to school in Darwin. With the outbreak of World War Two, she moved to Brisbane to finish her education. Returning to her beloved Territory, Jacqueline met and married stockman Ken Hammar, and they moved to a vast property in one of the most inaccessible areas of Australia, transporting corrugated iron and cutting down trees to build a crude hut to live in. With only a kerosene stove, scant possessions and a bed, Jacqueline lived a harsh and isolated existence. Her determination and courage helped her survive many hardships, including having to eat pigweed and sweet potato vines when food was scarce. Meanwhile, she supported Ken as he turned huge tracts of wilderness into a prosperous million-acre cattle station. Daughter of the Territory is a testament to a life well lived. Reminiscent of AB Facey's A Fortunate Life and Sara Henderson's From Strength to Strength, Jacqueline's life story is remarkable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Mailman of the Birdsville Track, The Man from Coolibah details the life of outback cattle property owner, helicopter muster operator and knockabout bloke Milton Jones. The youngest in a family of five, Milton Jones grew up on large properties in the outback. His father was a farm manager and so his early life was a world away from that of city kids. Milton left school in Queensland in his mid teens and moved back to the Northern Territory. Mustering was in his blood and so his first job was as a bullcatcher. Milton Jones is a man of his environment; tough and hardworking with a firm opinion on most things that he isn?t afraid to share. The story of how he bought Coolibah Station in 1988 in cash and the way he has built up his country empire is just one element of this book. For him, wrangling crocs, mustering cattle, fighting bush fires and riding rodeo are the norm. Over 500 km away from nearest city, Darwin, his life is lived on horseback, his days ruled by the sunlight. With the help of a seasonal workforce, plus his 42 choppers and a dozen or so horses, his business musters cattle from across the territory. The Man from Coolibah shows us what it is like to live in the never never and brings the Outback to life. For the men and women who live in Milton?s world, things are changing but the harshness and beauty of the outback stays the same.
