Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Shore of Massachusetts Bay Stranger, if thou hast learned a truth which needs No school of long experience, that this world Is full of guilt and misery, and hast seen Enough of all its sorrows, crimes, and cares, To tire thee of it, enter this wild wood - And view the haunts of nature. The calm shade Shall bring a kindred calm, and the sweet breeze That makes the green leaves dance, shall waft a balm To thy sick heart. Bryant. The first edition of the North Shore was issued in 1879 aid numbered 2,000 copies. A second edition of 2,000 copies was issued a month later. Editions of 3,500 each have been issued annually since then. The object of an annual publication is to keep pace with the rapid growth of the North Shore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Shore of Massachusetts Bay: An Illustrated Guide to Marblehead, Salem, Peabody, Beverly, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Magnolia, Gloucester, Rockport, and Ipswich When Roger Conant, that observing pioneer, sailed along the Cape shore from Gloucester to the mouth of the Naumkeag river, he saw the coast was one of no common beauty. To his penetrating glance was revealed a landscape of fresh and charming lines, - the foreground a picturesque coast, the distance filled by undulating hills that lay soft hidden in the blue of a bright summer morning. Conant was delighted. Seeking a spot where religion should be as free as the air around, could he do better than to plant a colony where every influence of nature seconded his pious purpose? Intolerance and bigotry could hardly find place where every idling wind placed its veto on slavery to anything. Conant needed no second thought, and with the readiness of a man who appreciates, he at once moved a portion of his little colony to the mouth of the Naumkeag. What Roger Conant gloried in two hundred and fifty years ago, strikes the observer to-day with the same gentle force; whether he sails along the coast, or travels the centre of the Cape by the Eastern railway to Salem, Marblehead, and Beverly harbors, acres of tiny forests, little villas like diamonds in rich natural settings, broad and undulating fields, glimpses of the sea, each and all contribute to paint a picture for the traveler that can scarce fade from his memory. From Newport to Portland a more dainty bit of natural beauty it would be hard to find. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who Along the North Shore of Massachusetts Bay The North Shore has continued to add to its many attractions. It has opened up many miles of woods roads that must be seen to be appreciated. It is impossible to describe the joy one feels in strolling through these Shady lanes which wind in and out among the hills, through the vales and across little rustic bridges which span tiny streams gliding between mossy banks and grassy hummocks away to the sea. The North Shore has an unrivalled position as a summer resort. It not only has the bold, rugged Shore front that is lashed by the billows of the Atlantic but it possesses a wealth of verdure of evergreen and deciduous trees which cover every hill as far as the eye can reach and extend to the very waters edge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Shore of Massachusetts 0 those who live in Boston and its Vicinity the North Shore of Massa chusetts, or The North Shore, as it is al ways called, has come to have an identity as a summer-resort quite as distinct as that of Bar Harbor, Newport, or Lenox. Even New Yorkers, enlightened as to its advan tages by those who go down to the sea in yachts, have learned to think of it respect fully as a very pretty place to which Bos tonians who wish to keep cool, and yet be able to see the gilded dome of the State house through a telescope, hie themselves from June to October. One would sup pose that its accessibility, its coolness, its freedom from either democratic or plutocratic crowds, and the unique com bination of the seaside and the country fore this the people from large cities who wish to be comfortable without being de voured by mosquitoes, to be cheerful without having to be riotous, to get enough to eat without being obliged to fight for it, and to sit on their piazzas without exposure to kodaks, picnickers, or surf flirtation. And yet the comfort seeking public still passes it by in favor of abandoned farms, sylvan camps, islands on the coast of Maine, and the various other refuges from the life of the average sum mer watering-place. Perhaps the reason is to be found in the argument that it is too near Boston, which is a polite way of expressing reluctance to invade the sacred precincts of the most critical society in America for fear of not pleasing. If such be the case, this attitude of caution acts as a two - edged sword, for if there is any plea to be urged against the attractiveness of the North Shore it is that the society is so exclusively Bostonese.
