Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “poignant” collection of real letters sent to Santa Claus—a town in Indiana—from the 1930s to the twenty-first century, from both children and adults (The New York Times). For countless Christmases, children—and sometimes adults—have stuffed their dreams, wishes, and promises into envelopes. Over many decades, millions of these letters have poured into Santa Claus, Indiana. Arriving from all corners of the globe, the letters ask for toys, family reunions, snow, and help for the needy—sometimes the needy being the writers themselves. They are candid, heartfelt, and often blunt. Many children wonder how Santa gets into their chimneyless homes. One child reminds Santa that she has not hit her brothers over 1,350 times that year, and another respectfully requests two million dollars in “cold cash.” One child hopes to make his life better with a time machine, an adult woman asks for a man, and one miscreant actually threatens Santa’s reindeer! Containing more than 250 actual letters and envelopes from the naughty and nice reaching back to the 1930s, this moving book will touch hearts and bring back memories of a time in our lives when the man with a white beard and a red suit held out the hope that our wishes might come true. “Often very affecting . . . also offers an unusual window into American history.” —Library Journal “The letters . . . are alternately silly and somber, hilarious and heartfelt.” —The Weekly Standard

Book excerpt: Cora Vaunderly shouldn't exist, but she doesn't know that yet. For her entire life she's accepted the future that was laid out before her: follow in her parents' footsteps, become a great Healer, and make them proud. An ordinary life, for certain, but Cora enjoyed the security in knowing what to expect. After all, life in Telgria is as predictable as it is planned.Cora lives in Telgria, a city where everyone's future is determined based on their individual talents, or gifts. Cora had always planned on becoming a Healer, just like her mother and father. She never imagined she'd be deemed Unreadable, or unable to be placed to study any gift. While wallowing in self-pity, Cora remains blind to things that have been set in motion both within and around her. An old enemy presumably returns, and individuals with magical blood are disappearing again. One day, without warning, Cora finds herself at the center of the turmoil building in Telgria and beyond. She has to make a choice. Does she open her mind to the possibility of being part of something bigger than herself, and bigger than the future she's so desperately clinging to; or does she ignore all the signs pointing her to a dangerous, yet enticing unknown? With help from someone she least expects, Cora learns what it really means to look inward and find power and magic within herself. Here's a sneak peek:The street lights dimmed at once, as if commanded by an outside force. Any passersby would assume there had been an outage on this quiet side street near the heart of the busy city. Lights, after all, go out all the time. If one stopped to investigate and really allowed themselves to take in the surroundings, however, they may have noticed a slight buzz in the air; almost as if an electric charge hung in place. Magic, very strong magic, was known to have that effect. Though Telgria was a city familiar with magic, it hadn't felt a surge of strong magic in nearly twenty years. Given what happened last time so much magic flowed without control, even if someone had noticed the change on this particular evening, they wouldn't have said a word. In places like this, voluntary ignorance triumphed over uncomfortable truths. Three figures stood at the end of the dark alley deep in conversation. Two taller figures, both male, faced a slightly shorter, slender, yet assertive female. The three spoke quickly in hushed tones. The woman shook her head, obviously a futile effort. The men stood, arms crossed, and stared her down. The woman's shoulders then hunched slightly, which indicated her defeat. She nodded her head briskly and turned at once toward the light of the main streets. Before her face could be viewed in the light, she flipped a hood over her head and disappeared into the crowd. The only evidence she had been there was the distinct click of her heels as she sped up to leave the darkness. The men stood back in the shadows as the lights slowly returned. One of the men quickly concealed his hands in his coat. The tips of his fingertips shone bright white, but extinguished in the depths of his pockets. A keen observer may deduce that the man returned the light to the street lamps, but it all happened too quickly to be sure. Immediately after, a heavy gust of wind blew a tornado of people's belongings. Hats, coats, and scarves whipped around the crowd as they passed the quiet alley. When the wind died down and everyone had their respective things in place, the two men who had been lingering in the street were no more. Had anyone witnessed anything in the darkness, they may wonder if what they'd seen was only a figment of their imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkien’s inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

Forward presented by Robert E. Peary."In short, Matthew Henson, next to Commander Peary, held and still holds the place of honor in the history of the expedition that finally located the position of the Pole, because he was the best man for the place. During twenty-three years of faithful service, he had made himself indispensable. From the position of a servant, he rose to that of companion and assistant in one of the most dangerous and difficult tasks that was ever undertaken by men. In extremity, when both the danger and the difficulty were greatest, the Commander wanted by his side the man upon whose skill and loyalty he could put the most absolute dependence and when that man turned out to be black instead of white. The Commander was not only willing to accept the service, but was at the same time generous enough to acknowledge it.

Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Children's Book This thrilling and terrifying true story of the 1879 search for the North Pole follows the frightening fates of the USS Jeannette crew as disaster strikes -- and the men battle to survive two years bound by ice. In the years following the Civil War, "Arctic fever" gripped the American public, fueled by myths of a fertile, tropical sea at the top of the world. Bound by Ice follows the journey of George Washington De Long and the crew of the USS Jeannette, who departed San Francisco in the summer of 1879 hoping to find a route to the North Pole. However, in mid-September the ship became locked in ice north of Siberia and drifted for nearly two years before it was crushed by ice and sank. De Long and his men escaped the ship and began a treacherous journey in extreme polar conditions in an attempt to reach civilization. Many—including De Long—did not survive. This true story for middle graders keeps readers on the edge of their seats to the very end. Includes excerpts from De Long’s extensive journals, which were recovered with his body; newspapers from the time; and photos and sketches by the men on the expedition.
