This arc will be used as a heat source in a true temperature wind tunnel designed, and currently under construction, for operation at Mach numbers between 3 and 12 at supply pressures of 5 to 150 atmospheres and total energy levels up to 5300 Btu/lb. The arc heater operates on 3-phase a.c. Its components, control systems and instrumentation are described in detail. The initial performance studies were carried out using a Mach number 3 nozzle with the flow expanding into the ambient atmosphere. These tests were carried out at supply pressures up to 45 atmospheres. The highest gas energy level obtained was 7700 Btu/lb. (Author).

This heater has three doughnut-shaped electrodes with internal coils to increase the magnetic field strength. The operation and performance of this design are discussed. Temperatures from 3500 to 4000 K with efficiencies from 15 to 23% were obtained at pressures from 10 to 15 atmospheres. Multiple arc streamers and the diffusion of the arc into the center of the chamber were observed. A high level of contamination of the effluent gas, an unsatisfactory magnetic design, and short component life make the design unsatisfactory. Methods of eliminating these problems are discussed. The results are in good agreement with experimental data from the arc. The need for true rms type electrical indicating instruments of wide frequency response and high accuracy is indicated. The test conditions involved stagnation pressures of 20 to 30 atmospheres, temperatures of 4000 to 9000R, and Mach numbers of 2.3 and 3. The models, made of teflon, has transverse and longitudinal cracks machined into the surface. They were instrumented for pressure, temperature, heat transfer and skin-friction measurements. The cracks were found to have pronounced effects on the ablative behavior. The heating is moderate under a laminar boundary layer, but can be catastrophic when the boundary layer is turbulent, depending upon the size and direction of the crack. The results for the transverse cracks were compared with an available analytical prediction. Ablation was found to reduce the wall shear stress by 40 percent or more. (Author).

Book excerpt: It is well established that population inversions between the (001) and (100) vibrational energy levels of CO2 can be created by rapid expansions of CO2-N2-H2O or He mixtures through supersonic nozzles. New experimental results are presented for such inversions. These experiments were conducted in both the 3-Megawatt Arc Tunnel and the 12.7 cm Shock Tunnel at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. The results support previously published theoretical predictions obtained with a numerical, time-dependent, nonequilibrium nozzle flow analysis employing a simplified vibrational kinetic model. This theory is also compared with experimental data obtained by other investigators. (Author).
