Download or read book Night Has a Thousand Eyes written by Cornell Woolrich and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Woolrich's iconic tale, Detective Tom Shawn saves a lovely young woman from a suicide attempt one night, and later hears her story. She is in despair because the death of her wealthy father has been predicted by a confident man seemingly gifted with the power of clairvoyance; a man whose predictions have unerringly aided her father in his business many times before. Shawn and a squad of detectives investigate this dire prediction and try to avert the millionaire businessman from meeting his ordained end at the stroke of midnight. One of Cornell Woolrich's most influential novels, this classic noir tale of a man struggling with his ability to see the future is arguably the author's best in its depiction of a doomed vision of predestination.
Download or read book Ethnography #9 written by Alan Klima and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Alan Klima writes in Ethnography #9, “there are other possible starting places than the earnest realism of anthropological discourse as a method of critical thought.” In this experimental ethnography of capitalism, ghosts, and numbers in mid- and late-twentieth-century Thailand, Klima uses this provocation to deconstruct naive faith in the “real” and in the material in academic discourse that does not recognize that it is, itself, writing. Klima also twists the common narrative that increasing financial abstractions in economic culture are a kind of real horror story, entangling it with other modes of abstraction commonly seen as less “real,” such as spirit consultations, ghost stories, and haunted gambling. His unconventional, distinctive, and literary form of storytelling uses multiple voices, from ethnographic modes to a first-person narrative in which he channels Northern Thai ghostly tales and the story of a young Thai spirit. This genre alchemy creates strange yet compelling new relations between being and not being, presence and absence, fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and reality. In embracing the speculative as a writing form, Klima summons unorthodox possibilities for truth in contemporary anthropology.

Download or read book Just Lucky written by John M. Findley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very unusual book. It is full of stories of unexpected and sometimes hazardous experiences. It is an adventure book that will appeal to the young and old alike. Anyone who likes the outdoors and nature will enjoy reading this book. John writes the same way he speaks. The stories are told in a down to earth manner with just enough humor thrown in to make them enjoyable. If you ever had a desire to explore unknown territory or to hike a new trail, you will certainly enjoy the stories in this book. Editor's note: John Findley is a truly extraordinary man and has lived a life packed with more extraordinary experiences than any other ten people I know combined. He has written this book where he relives many of these experiences, and I have had the good fortune to help John with some of the construction of this book (but the words and style are his). John has detailed memories of his experiences which include skydiving in ways I wish I could have seen, spelunking in places I am glad I have missed, and attempting to swim through the Grand Canyon three times. You will like this book!
