Book Synopsis Religion and the Making of Nigeria by : Olufemi Vaughan
Download or read book Religion and the Making of Nigeria written by Olufemi Vaughan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religion and the Making of Nigeria, Olufemi Vaughan examines how Christian, Muslim, and indigenous religious structures have provided the essential social and ideological frameworks for the construction of contemporary Nigeria. Using a wealth of archival sources and extensive Africanist scholarship, Vaughan traces Nigeria’s social, religious, and political history from the early nineteenth century to the present. During the nineteenth century, the historic Sokoto Jihad in today’s northern Nigeria and the Christian missionary movement in what is now southwestern Nigeria provided the frameworks for ethno-religious divisions in colonial society. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, Christian-Muslim tensions became manifest in regional and religious conflicts over the expansion of sharia, in fierce competition among political elites for state power, and in the rise of Boko Haram. These tensions are not simply conflicts over religious beliefs, ethnicity, and regionalism; they represent structural imbalances founded on the religious divisions forged under colonial rule.

Download or read book The Nigerian Nation and Religion. written by Hyacinth Kalu and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is the first of a-three-volume series of interfaith relationships in Nigeria, presents Nigeria as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, with religion controlling almost every aspects of life. It highlights the deep-rooted religious divide in Nigeria and looks into various ways that we can move beyond the religious bitterness existing among the three dominant religions in Nigeria: African traditional religion, Islam, and Christianity, and live, work and co-exit peacefully with one another as sisters and brothers. Although this volume begins with the history of Nigeria as nation, its primary interest, and indeed, the interest of the entire series, is not with the politics, economics, and culture of the Nigerian people per se; its primary focus is the religion of the people. Hence, it is a study of African Traditional Religion, Islam, and Christianity in Nigeria. The focus is not the theological and dogmatic principles and faith life of these religions, nor the individual and various sects within these religions; rather these religions are studied from the standpoint of interfaith encounter and relationships, as a requisite for peace, unity and harmony in Nigeria.

Book Synopsis Nigeria and the Nation-State by : John Campbell
Download or read book Nigeria and the Nation-State written by John Campbell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria matters. It is Africa’s largest economy, and it is projected to become the third most populous country in the world by 2050, but its democratic aspirations are challenged by rising insecurity. John Campbell traces the fractured colonial history and contemporary ethnic conflicts and political corruption that define Nigeria today. It was not—and never had been—a nation-state like those of Europe. It is still not quite a nation because Nigerians are not yet united by language, religion, culture, or a common national story. It is not quite a state because the government is weak and getting weaker, beset by Islamist terrorism, insurrection, intercommunal violence, and a countrywide crime wave. This deeply knowledgeable book is an antidote to those who would make the mistakes of Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq—mistakes based on misunderstanding—in Nigeria. Up to now, such mistakes have largely been avoided, but Nigeria will soon—and Campbell argues already does—require much greater attention by the West.
Book Synopsis Religious Impact on the Nation State by : Pat Williams
Download or read book Religious Impact on the Nation State written by Pat Williams and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines the link between religion and politics both at the level of theory and with specific reference to Nigeria. The first part of the book focuses on major local issues, and the second on how religion affects the country's relations. The religious problem has become prominent, not only for its recurrence, but also for its intensity. Nigeria itself is plural with innumerable religious groups, although this need not be a problem if pluralism is used to promote freedom of association, democracy and human rights. It does become a problem if, as this book notes, religious groups make self-centered demands on the state; when the state succumbs to such demands or to blackmail; and when public officers use religious groups and leaders for their own political survival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitions and descriptions of religion by anti-religion scholars, philosophers and scientists often downplay the role, relevance, functions and contributions of religion to the society, and usually reduce it to a mere set of beliefs, doctrines, rituals and spirituality. In Nigeria, most of the critics of religion often forget that they owe Western education championed by the missionaries for most of their accomplishments in life. This is in addition to the spiritual assistance and healthcare services provided by religious leaders and institutions in the country. In our previous book - Religion in Contemporary Nigeria- we addressed issues in the use and misuse of religion in Nigeria. This volume focuses on the role of religion in Nigeria's development. This carefully selected compendium contains the submissions of eminent scholars from African Traditional Religion, Christianity and Islam and is jointly edited by experienced professors in the fields. The overall aim is to enhance better understanding of religion as a veritable instrument of development in Nigeria.
