Book excerpt: Did man evolve accidentally, or is his existence the result of a creative act? Is there life after death? Am I given a purpose? Where do we look for answers to such questions, assuming we care? In Christianity alone, statisticians tell us there are over thirty thousand denominations. Which of these offers authentic truth? It is no small inquiry. I venture to say there is no man, woman, or child who will not contemplate the questions of how they came to exist, the purpose behind it, whether they will continue to exist and in what way. Furthermore, the central question of the existence of a higher power and its consequences for us has vexed and divided mankind since he first aspired to ask it. In the seventeenth century, when Galileo described the earth as rotating the sun, science began to assert itself as the arbiter of the yet unknown. With the Age of Reason, the authority of the scientific method of inquiry began its rise to occupying the place of rational authority. Religion experienced a relatively humbling categorization as quaint mystery. Most unsolved material questions that were matters of competing views have fallen to the credit of the scientist. We now know why volcanoes erupt, in other words. But the scientist has overextended himself. He rose from the high seat to mount the high horse; explaining all things by reducing them to their smallest elements. His accounting for cosmogenesis, arrival of life, evolution, and the nonexistence of God is an accounting he cannot make without assumptions. So he assumes for us all. This creates a troublesome dilemma for modern man. Is he required to reject his faith, or in practicing faith in God, is he required to reject the rationality of science? In The Next Awakening, a solution is offered to the wrangling debate of the atheistic scientist with the fundamentalist Christian.

He reveals the problems inherent in the entertainment-based postmodern church and shows how a return to biblical teaching will restore its strength and impact. Now being replaced by a feel-good message instead of what Christians need to know to stand strong in a world that's lost its way--Swindoll exposes the problems of--and solutions for--the postmodern evangelical church. Just as he opened readers' eyes with his bold statements in The Grace Awakening, now he offers a straightforward volume revealing how to reestablish a life-altering church with Christ as Lord and Master. Illuminating and empowering, THE CHURCH AWAKENING will ignite a revolution in the way Christians "do church" for years to come.

The church fulfills its mission today to the extent that it honors these essential elements, modelled perfectly in Jesus? missionary enterprise: white-hot faith commitment to the cause contagious relationships rapid mobilization adaptive methods Throughout the ages Jesus' followers have been called to continue his movement in the power of the Holy Spirit. Like many such movements, it changed the world. Unlike most movements, which have their historical moment and then fade away, Christianity is actively, continually changing the world for the better.

Book excerpt: We all want revival. We talk about it, pray for it, and devise every evangelism strategy imaginable. We read about the Great Awakening and recall the Jesus Movement. And today we stand at the precipice of another sweeping spiritual outbreak that could reach the ends of the earth. But are we ready? Revival Culture is an inspirational, biblical, and empowering manual for the next generation of revivalists. Michael Brodeur and Banning Liebscher have been witnessing a spiritual renewal at Bethel Church in Redding, California, and through Jesus Culture, that goes beyond slogans and high hopes to actually reaching. They have learned that transformation happens when we see the unreached as Jesus sees them and when we make revival a part of our lives rather than an event. This is the full picture of revival culture.

Book excerpt: Ryuho Okawa, known as Master Okawa, is an icon in Japan, with more than 12 million followers and Happy Science Centers in 80 countries. As the founder of what is both a religious and spiritual movement, he is also a best-selling author with an astonishing 600 books to his credit. His bestsellers include: The Laws of the Sun, The Laws of Happiness, The Essence of Buddha, and Invincible Thinking. Many of these books are based on speeches Okawa gave before arenas of up to 50,000 people, while others are taken from conversations he has had- both in private and in public-with a veritable "Who's Who" of Higher Spirits, a diverse group that includes Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Shakespeare, Edison, Newton, Confucius, Socrates and Picasso, among many others. Today, Happy Science has opened Centers in New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Tampa. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hawaii, and Toronto. Corresponding with Happy Science's fairly recent entry into North America, Master Okawa has now released The Next Great Awakening: A Spiritual Renaissance. The Next Great Awakening begins with a recounting of Okawa's personal awakening. He explains why the "Real World" is not what we see with our limited senses, and shares "The Truth" about alien visitations in this New Space Age. One chapter also consists of verbatim conversations with four Higher Spirits: Enlil, Athena, Confucius and Rient Arl Croud in which they offer sage observations and predictions. In this new book Master Okawa described the New Space Age and one that will ultimately see an influx of alien visitors, an end to war, and the beginning of Utopia on Earth. Okawa convincingly explains why Earth, of all the planets in the Universe, is destined to become the "Planet of Love," and why we must wholeheartedly welcome extraterrestrial beings. Extraterrestrials have in fact long lived among us, Master Okawa reports, with many more preparing to visit. Those here now, and those yet to come will publicly declare themselves once we are able to stop all wars and other forms of violence against each other and against the Earth itself, he writes. Explaining Happy Science, Okawa describes it as a non-denominational religious movement that warmly welcomes all races and creeds. Backing up his claim are the testimonials of followers from around the world, who report that their belief in and commitment to the teachings of Master Okawa allows them to "experience miracles every day." For five-year-old Greg, it was the memory of his ma walking back to the house after confronting his stepdad with a splintered, bloodied baseball bat in her hand. Greg Stier was raised in a family of bodybuilding, tobacco-chewing, fist-fighting thugs. He never knew his biological father because his mom had met his dad at a party; she got pregnant, and he left town. Though his mom almost aborted him, in a last-minute twist, Greg’s life was spared for so much more. Unlikely Fighter is the incredible story of how God showed up in Greg’s life—and how he can show up in yours as well. This is a memoir of violence and mayhem—and how God can transform everything.

Book excerpt: Roughly corresponding in time to the Great Awakening in the east, there was an extraordinary outpouring of prophecy among the western tribes of western Montana, Idaho and eastern Washington. Occuring prior to the arrival of white people, these prophecies began to alert the tribes to the Christian gospel, soon to arrive on their doorstep.... The Forgotten Awakening tells the story of those prophecies and the spiritual fervor they produced west of the Rockies.... It suggests that, if God has a unique vision for the North American continent, the indigenous First Nations are an indispensable part of it, and were intended so from the beginning"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: I will always remember it as the day my world of waiting tables with my brother Tannis in a small peaceful village was suddenly and violently torn asunder. The very earth I stood upon crumbled and quaked and I was suddenly swept off into the unknown. Looking back it wasn't the darkness that I feared, but the knowledge that unseen hands had the power to pull me into it. I had no knowledge of Wizards, Dragons, Trolls, and other monstrosities that thrive in the dark places of the world, but when you have been swept off your feet you have little control of how and where you might land. Through my travels, I discovered great peoples of the world and have seen both the light and dark that inhabits the hearts of men. And if I live to see this all set right I will always say that it was the love of life and the adventures that were set in motion that great day that gave me the power to be a light in the dark. -Hidden Journals of Jadeance of Tigman Volume II 5E-862.

Book excerpt: The first biography of Sir George Trevelyan, felt by many to be the grandfather of the movement for spiritual regeneration in Britain.Sir George Trevelyan espoused alternative values long before the phrase became as popular as it is today. After hearing a lecture by a pupil of Rudolf Steiner, Trevelyan declared "The agnosticism of thirty-six years faded like morning mist. The spiritual worldview was clear to me in its glory and wonder."During his lifetime he explored beliefs in angels, the calming effects of crystals and the power of ley lines, alongside organic farming and communal living. In 1971 he set up the Wrekin Trust to promote spiritual education and knowledge, and in 1982 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (the"alternative Nobel Prize") for his contribution towards healing the planet. He inspired and encouraged the emerging synthesis between science and spirituality, putting his faith for the future of society in the transforming power of spiritual awakening. He taught extensively, inspiring communities, universities and spiritual groups worldwide. He died in 1996 at the age of ninety.
