Book Synopsis Called To Mission by : Mirjam Scarborough
Download or read book Called To Mission written by Mirjam Scarborough and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PAPERBACK. 192 pages Crown Quarto format. According to the meta-study ReMAP, between 1992 and 1994 one missionary in twenty prematurely left mission service each year. This implies the loss of half of all missionaries every thirteen years. With this in mind, it is widely thought that a clear sense of call serves to prevent such dropout. This detailed and compassionate study of Mennonite women missionaries in Central Africa finds this to be true-in the short term. But in the long term, the sense of call itself tends to turn on the call-resulting in burnout and dropout. Through extensive field work, the author charts the course of missionaries who remodeled the call-turning its burden into blessing. This is embedded in a careful theological analysis, drawing on a wide sweep of Mennonite thought and praxis.

Book excerpt: Newton, Kansas, was established by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad as a new railhead for the Chisholm Cattle Trail in 1871. After two years as the wildest cow town in the West, Newton became a center for Mennonite migration and wheat production in east central Kansas, with the railroad moving it all. In addition to eastern European immigrants and hard winter wheat seed, the rails brought even more people from differing backgrounds, all of whom helped the town grow and change. Images of America: Newton shows those people and the places where they worked, worshipped, and played and includes many photographs from residents' family albums in addition to images from public archives. Meet the residents of this "Crossroads of Kansas" city, from the locally famous to the folks next door, in the pages of Newton.

Book Synopsis Newton on the Christian Life by : Tony Reinke
Download or read book Newton on the Christian Life written by Tony Reinke and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Newton is best known as the slave trader turned hymn writer who penned the most popular English hymn in history: “Amazing Grace.” However, many Christians are less familiar with the decades he spent in relative obscurity, laboring as a “spiritual doctor” while pastoring small parishes in England. In the latest addition to Crossway’s growing Theologians on the Christian Life series, Tony Reinke introduces modern readers to Newton’s pastoral wisdom by leading them through the many sermons, hymns, and—most importantly—letters that he wrote over the course of his life. Considered by many to be one of the greatest letter writers of all time, Newton has valuable insights to offer modern Christians, especially when it comes to fusing together sound doctrine, lived experience, and godly practice. Part of the Theologians on the Christian Life series.
