Book excerpt: Excerpt from Williams College and Foreign Missions: Biographical Sketches of Williams College Men, Who Have Rendered Special Service, to the of Foreign Missions Of the 127 persons whose biographies are given in this volume, nearly all served as missionaries in foreign fields; a few being sent under appointment of the American Board, in the earlier years of the last century, to labor among the American Indians. The whole list includes the names of three persons who rendered efficient and distinguished services to the cause of foreign missions in the important offices they held under the American or Presbyterian Board. It also properly came within the scope of the work to include sketches of all of the Men of the Haystack and of all of the first signers of the constitution of the first Missionary Society that was formed in America, although some members of these two groups did not themselves become missionaries. It has not been the purpose to treat of home missions, although Williams College sustains an important relation to that field also. The completion of 100 years since Gordon Hall began his work in India makes the present a fitting time in which to commemorate the lives of the heroic men who have done so much to introduce Christian civilization into heathen lands and have given to Williams College its chiefest distinction. It is hoped that, for a further perpetuation of their memory, a bronze tablet bearing their names may some day be placed in one of the halls of the College. The movement out of which sprang the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was one of a series of important events which occurred about the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1810 marks the start of the North American foreign missions movement -- a movement begun with typical American enthusiasm and vigor but in need of practical grounding. This volume explores important facets of the development of North American foreign missions, paying particular attention to the role agencies like the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) played in shaping the theology, theory, and policy of evangelistic activities overseas. Written by leading experts on missions and religious history, this volume is distinguished by its focus on key events taking place at the home base rather than on happenings in the foreign mission field. In doing so, these insightful studies shed light on important yet neglected topics, including the impact of debates about slavery on foreign missions, the emergence of distinctive mission strategies for women, the role of the social gospel as a missionary ideology, and the contribution of foreign missions to the creation of a global evangelical network. Contributors: Alvyn AustinRuth Compton Brouwer, Wendy J. Diechmann Edwards, Janet F. Fishburn, Paul Harris, David W. Kling, Charles A. Maxfield III, Susan Wilds McArver, John F. Piper Jr., Dana L. Robert, Richard Lee Rogers, Wilbert R. Shenk, Carol Ann Vaughn. bThis excellent volume will command widespread attention not only for its display of scholarly expertise but for the fresh and revealing light it throws on the principal landmarks and major themes in the history of missionary expansion overseas.b -- Andrew Porter Kingbs College London

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity regards teaching as one of the most foundational and critically sustaining ministries of the Church. As a result, Christian education remains one of the largest and oldest continuously functioning educational systems in the world, comprising both formal day schools and higher education institutions as well as informal church study groups and parachurch ministries in more than 140 countries. In The Encyclopedia of Christian Education, contributors explore the many facets of Christian education in terms of its impact on curriculum, literacy, teacher training, outcomes, and professional standards. This encyclopedia is the first reference work devoted exclusively to chronicling the unique history of Christian education across the globe, illustrating how Christian educators pioneered such educational institutions and reforms as universal literacy, home schooling, Sunday schools, women’s education, graded schools, compulsory education of the deaf and blind, and kindergarten. With an editorial advisory board of more than 30 distinguished scholars and five consulting editors, TheEncyclopedia of Christian Education contains more than 1,200 entries by 400 contributors from 75 countries. These volumes covers a vast range of topics from Christian education: History spanning from the church’s founding through the Middle Ages to the modern day Denominational and institutional profiles Intellectual traditions in Christian education Biblical and theological frameworks, curricula, missions, adolescent and higher education, theological training, and Christian pedagogy Biographies of distinguished Christian educators This work is ideal for scholars of both the history of Christianity and education, as well as researchers and students of contemporary Christianity and modern religious education.
