Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Senior Man: Exploring New Horizons, New Opportunities fills a gap that is already huge –and growing. Where do men fit into the astonishing changes in both life expectancy and visibility of the aging boomers among us? Unlike women, who move into retirement years with a network of friends and intimates cultivated over decades, men, for the most part, do it alone. Changes in women’s lives and in the culture have brought changes for men who were told to “man up” since they were toddlers. Having faced that challenge throughout their lives, it’s time now to do it again: to see changes in the world around them as opportunities, to discover new strengths and passions, to make the most of the gift of time. With perhaps a third of productive life ahead, retirement requires redefinition. Where are the role models among the men who, at this critical turning point in their lives, continue to redefine and reinvent their lives past the time of the proverbial gold watch and a set of golf clubs? As pioneers in this rapidly emerging new world, the men whose narratives appear in this book are role models for each other and those who follow. They seek more than advice about investments and improving their golf strokes. Men from all walks of life tell us, in their own words, how they see the challenges and chances that lie ahead and within themselves, and how they are taking full advantage of opportunities that re-start living. Each chapter presents a topic relevant to this later stage of life: memory, family dynamics, sexual intimacy, loss, and independence, among others. Like a conversation among friends, the book introduces readers to new ways of looking at the present and the future, so that men may cultivate a lifestyle that not only suits them, but supports a healthy, rewarding, and enjoyable reframing of life.

Is there a continual struggle between your old nature and your new nature in Christ? You are not alone. This book came about when Bishop Miguel Renteria began to pray and seek revelation concerning Ephesians 4:22–24: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. In this book you will understand what Paul was talking about in Ephesians chapter 4. You will discover amazing and practical truths about the natures of the old man and the new man. You will understand and become aware of why you continue to sin after your first spiritual birth, but how, after your second spiritual birth, the born again in Christ cannot sin.

Old Man Country helps readers see and imagine this change for themselves. The book follows the journey of a writer in search of wisdom, as he narrates encounters with twelve distinguished American men over 80 -- including Paul Volcker, the former head of the Federal Reserve, and Denton Cooley, the world's most famous heart surgeon. In these and other intimate conversations, the book explores and honors the particular way that each man faces the challenges of living a good old age"--

Book excerpt: Perfect for an entry-level sci-fi reader and the ideal addition to a veteran fan’s collection, John Scalzi's Old Man’s War will take audiences on a heart-stopping adventure into the far corners of the universe. John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce-and aliens willing to fight for them are common. The universe, it turns out, is a hostile place. So: we fight. To defend Earth (a target for our new enemies, should we let them get close enough) and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has gone on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force, which shields the home planet from too much knowledge of the situation. What's known to everybody is that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You'll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You'll serve your time at the front. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets. John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine-and what he will become is far stranger. Book excerpt: When I was a kid in the late 1950s, while I was a student at Paoli Elementary School, I read the famous children's book that talks about the Kid from Leftfield. Also around that time, I always said to myself, "What is it going to be like in the year 2000? I'll be fifty years old!" I couldn't comprehend being that old; the thought of it scared me, and I'd probably be in a wheelchair or something worse. I bet a lot of people my age thought the same thing. This is the story of what that kid did when he reached the age of fifty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So who is Omar Eby? A retired English professor (tenderhearted and cynical) who looks with affection and severity upon the young man he once was in Somalia. Ebys first chapter Learning My Name quickly and playfully sets the tone for this fascinating memoir, The Boy and the Old Man. Identifying with one Omar after another, Eby skips from a Taliban terrorist and a four-star general to a translator of Somali tales and an Old Testament duke; then recalls an English student in Mogadiscio and an Epicurean Persian poet; meets a Chilean Anabaptist and finally names the close friend of Prophet Muhammad, Omar ibn al Khattab. You think this an exercise in narcissism? Of course notthe author finds too many ties linking a nave Mennonite missionary boy to Muslim society and the incredible beauty of the natural worldshows too well the tensions between documented facts and dramatic memory. On the horn of Africa, Somali pirates seize tankers. On the mainland, clans fire rockets into each others quarters of Mogadishu, once the capital of the Somali Republic. But Omar Eby remembers another Somalia, when he taught there 50 years ago. Through the grid of accumulated years, Eby studies that missionary boy. The reader hears two voices: the 23-year old boy and the 73-year old man. Often the old man loves the boy; often the boy embarrasses him. The Somalis, Eby remembers as beautiful and exasperating, then, in 1959, as now, in 2009. The chapters are like a series of transparencies laid down one on top of the other. The boys views overlaid by the mans two visits to Somalia in his thirties and then memory laid over everything. With more details, everything should be clearer. Yet, Eby writes in the Introduction, we are pleasantly surprised to find that the historically reconstructed self is still blurred, as muddy as the Shebelli River which flows through Somalia from the Ethiopian highlands.

In the summer of 1939, with the nation balanced between the Great Depression and the gathering winds of war, young Jack Newkirk set off on a rickety Harley to see both the New York and San Francisco World's Fairs. He had no way of knowing it was to e the autumn of his youth, and that his entire generation would soon be thrust into the most devastating conflict in history. Seven decades later, author John J. Newkirk retraces this epic ride with his father, Jack, in a silent hope the old soldier will still be proud of the America he fought for. Each mile brings discovery as the author learns of his namesake, the heroic Squadron Leader of the legendar Flying Tigers, and of his father's life on the road and in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War II. The result is quintessential Americana, a sweeping portrait of the grit, guts, ingenuity, and sacrifice that defined a nation, and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how we can overcome our most pressing challenges and reclaim the American Dream.

Book excerpt: No one saw it being built, and the residents of River Bend, Arkansas never got acquainted with the builder before he just disappeared, but he left his tiny, strictly one-man, cabin behind on property that belonged to no one. The land had once belonged to the river, and someday it might be taken back, but in the 1900s hill country, it had one more purpose and the angels would see that the purpose came about. Young Jefferson Masters was a master logger, being the link between the massive trees on the hillside and the lovely, durable furniture created from oak, pecan and walnut logs. He was also skillful at turning logs into cabins, and would create one for himself just as soon as he found someone to occupy it with him. For a young man who is slow in finding a mate, the best path to take is toward a girl who knows how its done and again, it may take the services of an angel or maybe a sick, old man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of One of the Most Remarkable Trials in All History! Sensational trials--the Menendez brothers, the Rodney King case, the Preppie Murder--are not unique to the age of television. The year 1900 saw one of the most dramatic criminal trials in American history, described by one newspaper at the time as America's most remarkable murder case. When William Marsh Rice, the founder of Rice University, was found dead in the New York City quarters he shared with his only servant, suspicion immediately fell on Albert Patrick, a young lawyer. Rice, whose fortune was pledged to Rice Institute (later Rice University), had, it seemed, been killed by chloroform poisoning and his will forged to give Patrick his vast estate. Patrick was immediately arrested and, in a spectacular trial, tried for first-degree murder, a crime then punishable by execution. In this combination murder mystery and murder history, Martin Friedland recounts the events leading up to the trial and the case as it played itself out in court. Skillfully guiding the reader through the trial and its outcome, Friedland sheds new light on the events, casting doubt on what, at first glance, seems an ironclad case. Provocatively illustrated with over 60 photographs that capture the circumstances of the trial and the mood of New York City at the turn of the century, The Death of Old Man Rice is not only a gripping tale of murder and intrigue, but a timely window onto many aspects of criminal justice in America. Touching on issues of great contemporary relevance-- such as the influence of the popular press; the purchase of expert witnesses; the problems of multiple appeals; the inadequacy of penal institutions; and the advantages of wealth--Friedland combines scholarship with suspense in his trademark who done it style. A murder mystery, a historical study, and a fascinating window into the world of forensic science, The Death of Old Man Rice is that rare book that can engage any reader.
