Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Keynesian Microfoundations The paper then goes on to present in Section IV a static model of monopolistic competition which forms the basis for the later discussion of price rigidity. This model is classical in that, without price rigidities, its unique equilibrium has monetary shocks affecting prices alone. In Section V, a once and for all change in the money stock is analyzed in a simple two period variant of the static model to which costs of changing prices have been added. In this model monetary expansions, at least if they fall within a certain range, affect output. While some issues which arise in models with more periods are masked by the two period assumption, this model has several interesting features including a multiplicity of equilibria. In particular, for a range of monetary shocks both changed and unchanged prices can be consistent with equilibrium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a text for advanced undergraduate macroeconomic theory courses. It draws together the central ideas in what is referred to as the New Keynesian Macroeconomics and sets them in dialogue with the New Classical Macroeconomics. The key organizing argument in the text is that the major disputes in macroeconomics turn on the different ways of modelling time and social interdependence. In particular the New Keynesians draw attention to the multiple macroeconomic equilibria that arise when economies are set in historical time and when social interdependence is best captured by imperfectly competitive microfoundations. In this context, the behaviour of the economy depends critically on the conventions and institutions which embody them because they aid equilibrium selection. The principal strengths of the text are the discussion of the recent literature on multiple rational expectations equilibria; the connection between equilibrium selection and institutional context; game theoretic discussion of social interdependence, particularly with respect to wage and price formation; and the analysis of debates over both demand and supply side activism. As the first textbook to develop the New Keynesian Macroeconomics, the book will be widely used on second and third year undergraduate courses on macroeconomics. It will also serve as a text for advanced undergraduate courses which integrate micro and macro in general equilibrium theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Keynesian Economics has been the most significant development in economics in recent years. However, many modern thinkers have asked whether it actually builds upon or merely distorts Keynes' work. This unique volume provides the first full-scale critique of the New Keynesian school of thought. Within its pages, Post-Keynesian economists, including many from the United States, challenge New Keynesianism both on the grounds that it is not Keynesian, and does not provide an adequate account of our current economic problems. Sure to provoke much new debate and even controversy, New Keynesian Economicsseeks to reconcile these two seemingly intractable systems.

Book excerpt: All economists are familiar with the division of the subject into microeconomics and macroeconomics. However, few economists are able to give an accurate account of what distinguishes micro and macro. The increasing interest in the `microfoundations of macroeconomics' has typically attracted those who feel that economics is about the rational behaviour of individuals and who regard macro propositions as a consequence of the intentions of individuals. As a result, `microfoundations' have come to be synonymous with theories of individual behaviour. However, Maarten Janssen argues that it is microeconomics' concern with the functioning of markets that underlies theories of microfoundations. This claim is substantiated by an analysis of the aggregation problem, of the foundations of equilibrium theories, of the rational expectations hypothesis, and of a model from the New Keynesian literature.

Book excerpt: The classic introduction to the New Keynesian economic model This revised second edition of Monetary Policy, Inflation, and the Business Cycle provides a rigorous graduate-level introduction to the New Keynesian framework and its applications to monetary policy. The New Keynesian framework is the workhorse for the analysis of monetary policy and its implications for inflation, economic fluctuations, and welfare. A backbone of the new generation of medium-scale models under development at major central banks and international policy institutions, the framework provides the theoretical underpinnings for the price stability–oriented strategies adopted by most central banks in the industrialized world. Using a canonical version of the New Keynesian model as a reference, Jordi Galí explores various issues pertaining to monetary policy's design, including optimal monetary policy and the desirability of simple policy rules. He analyzes several extensions of the baseline model, allowing for cost-push shocks, nominal wage rigidities, and open economy factors. In each case, the effects on monetary policy are addressed, with emphasis on the desirability of inflation-targeting policies. New material includes the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates and an analysis of unemployment’s significance for monetary policy. The most up-to-date introduction to the New Keynesian framework available A single benchmark model used throughout New materials and exercises included An ideal resource for graduate students, researchers, and market analysts

Book excerpt: We analyze the microfoundations for Keynesian aggregate demand effects by considering the link between aggregate demand and firm production decisions under monopolistic competition. Macroeconomic equilibrium is characterized in a simple graphical framework that facilitates comparison of several major approaches to modeling Keynesian microfoundations, including equilibrium theories, "new Keynesian" sticky price models, and more traditional sticky wage approaches. We use this framework to develop an original perspective on aggregate demand effects according to which aggregate demand shocks directly affect the demand conditions and production choices of individual firms. The results require neither nominal rigidity nor expectation errors. Nominal disinflation is ineffective in offsetting the real effects of demand shocks if aggregate demand is insensitive to nominal prices.

Book excerpt: This book retraces the history of macroeconomics from Keynes's General Theory to the present. Central to it is the contrast between a Keynesian era and a Lucasian - or dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) - era, each ruled by distinct methodological standards. In the Keynesian era, the book studies the following theories: Keynesian macroeconomics, monetarism, disequilibrium macro (Patinkin, Leijongufvud, and Clower) non-Walrasian equilibrium models, and first-generation new Keynesian models. Three stages are identified in the DSGE era: new classical macro (Lucas), RBC modelling, and second-generation new Keynesian modeling. The book also examines a few selected works aimed at presenting alternatives to Lucasian macro. While not eschewing analytical content, Michel De Vroey focuses on substantive assessments, and the models studied are presented in a pedagogical and vivid yet critical way.
