Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Negro in Chicago" is a sociological study published in 1922 by the University of Chicago Press. The study included a substantial review of the background of the Chicago riots of July and August 1919, the riots themselves, and their aftermath, together with original work and investigation into the relations between and perceptions of the black and white communities in Chicago. At this time, the city experienced a substantial increase of Black migration from the South. World War I had brought industrial jobs to cities in the North but many of these jobs were subject to a color bar and only available to whites. The arrival of black people in northern cities led to an increase in rent in underdeveloped neighborhoods and white flight. Expansion of the ghetto caused friction among white residents, which eventually led to riots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allan Spear explores here the history of a major Negro community during a crucial thirty-year period when a relatively fluid patter of race relations gave way to a rigid system of segregation and discrimination. This is the first historical study of the ghetto made famous by the sociological classics of St. Clair Drake, E. Franklin Frazier, and others—by the novels of Richard Wright, and by countless blues songs. It was this ghetto that Martin Luther King, Jr., chose to focus on when he turned attention to the racial injustices of the North. Spear, by his objective treatment of the results of white racism, gives an effective, timely reminder of the serious urban problems that are the legacy of prejudice.

Book excerpt: Anti-black racism is a stark presence in Chicago, a fact illustrated by significant racial inequality in and around contemporary "global" city. Drawing his work as a civil rights advocate and investigator in Chicago, Street explains this neo-liberal apartheid and its resulting disparity in terms of persistently and deeply racist societal and institutional practices and policies. Racial Oppression in the Black Metropolis uses the highly relevant historical and sociological laboratory that is Chicago in order to explain the racist societal and institutional practices and policies which still typify the United States. Street challenges dominant neoconservative explanations of the black urban crisis that emphasize personal irresponsibility and cultural failure. Looking to the other side of the ideological isle, he criticizes liberal and social democratic approaches that elevate class over race and challenges many observers' sharp distinction between present and so-called past racism. In questioning the supposedly inevitable reign of urban-neoliberaism, Street also investigates the real, racial politics of the United States and finds that parties and ideologies matter little on matters of race. This innovative work in urban history and cultural criticism will inform contemporary social science and policy debates for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A forthright examination of the Black American in urban society - documented with fifteen candid articles and over fifty dramatic photographs. The vivid, first-hand accounts in this book bring to life both the exciting and the discouraging aspects of black urban experience from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Kenneth B. Clark are among the commentators who examine the deplorable frustrations that have faced Negro newcomers to the city - the long and often futile search for a decent place to live, for a job, and for acceptable schools for their children. The old pattern of initial enthusiasm followed by deep discouragement reveals itself time and time again in these selections. But the city has made positive contributions to Negro life, and articles describing some of these - including the Harlem Renaissance and the constructive use of political power - also appear in this volume. The result of the balanced, many-sided approach provided in this candid book is a realistic portrayal of black triumphs and failures as they really are.
