Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success in learning a foreign language is influenced by both affective and cognitive factors. One of the most widely accepted affective factors in foreign language learning is motivation. Motivation is the most used concept for explaining the failure or success of a language learner. Considering the significance of motivation in second language acquisition, this book investigated the effect of motivational factors on English achievement. The wider concluding argument of this book is that motivation, and its constructs are context dependent and therefore, any language learning context has its own unique motivational model. "Thank you for the summary of your research. It is very interesting." R. C. Gardner, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus Department of Psychology University of Western Ontario, "Hojat Jodai has done a very systematic research using the most interesting statistical analysis. I surmise that the study is good enough to be a source of several academic paper publications." Amir Mahdavi Zafarghandi PhD. graduate of Essex University, U.K. Assistant Professor, English Language Dept., University of Guilan, Iran

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is an important affective factor in second/foreign language learning (Dörnyei, 1990; Gardner, 1985). While considerable studies have examined students' motivation in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, a majority of them focused on university students and adult learners (Boo et al., 2015; Butler, 2015b; Jin et al., 2014; Lamb, 2017; Xu & Case, 2015). This study addresses the gaps in previous research and focuses on upper elementary (Grade 6) English learners in China. First, this study developed and examined the psychometric properties of a motivation survey for upper elementary English learners in China. Furthermore, this study investigated the effects of three motivational factors- perceived parental influence, perceived peer influence, and English learning experience-on English achievement. A first version of the motivation survey was designed and piloted among 493 Grade 6 students from four public schools (school A, school B, school C, school D) that are located in different socioeconomic areas in an economically and socioculturally less developed city in China. Data from the pilot study were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Based on the results of EFA, the first version of the motivation survey was revised. Another sample of participants (N=657) was recruited from Grade 6 classrooms in four public schools (school A with different classrooms from the pilot study, school E, school F, school G) in the same city. Schools B, C, D share similar characteristics as schools E, F, and G. These participants completed the revised version of the motivation survey. Their English scores from the school district level achievement tests in Grade 5 and Grade 6 were collected as a measure of foreign language achievement. Factor analyses across the three samples identified that Ideal L2 self, Ought-to L2 self, English learning experience, parent-oriented motivation, and peer-oriented motivation were five unique and correlated factors. In addition, all five factors had adequate-to-high internal consistency reliability coefficients. The overall model fit of the five correlated factors was satisfactory. Regarding the effects of motivational factors on foreign language achievement, structural equation modeling found that English learning experience, defined as the extent to which students enjoy learning English or students' attitudes toward learning English, had a significant direct effect on English achievement, even after controlling for students' prior English achievement. Additionally, children's perceived parental influence and peer influence indirectly affected English achievement via their English learning experience (i.e. attitudes toward learning English). The findings from the factor analyses across three samples provided preliminary validation of a survey that can be used to measure upper elementary English learners' motivation. The findings also suggest that, when using surveys in L2 motivation research, researchers need to take participants' ages into consideration. The findings from the structural equation modeling deepen our understanding of the relationship between motivation and foreign language achievement and have implications for parents and language educators in elementary schools in China.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to explore the role of motivational factors in the academic achievement of EFL learners. The research was conducted at a State University, Faculty of Education in Turkey. The participants were 230 freshman prospective teachers from four different academic majors taking English class. Attitude/Motivation Test Battery which was composed of two parts as demographic part and the questionnaire was used to collect data about the participants? views on motivational factors influencing their academic achievement. Then, the data collected from the questionnaire was compared with the test scores of the participants at the end of the semester. The results of the research suggest that most of the motivational factors had a significant difference in the academic achievement of Turkish EFL learners. Furthermore, gender and academic major were directly affected by the motivational factors.

Book excerpt: This research has been done to find out the factors influencing the students' successes in learning a foreign language (English). In other words; the effects of the methods and techniques, used by the teachers on the staff to teach the chosen foreign language, on the students' success. The main aim of this study to make the foreign language teaching in secondary and high schools more effective and make it suitable by reducing the educational expenses for ones who want to learn a foreign language, but not having more money. In this study it has been tried to answer some questions which are suitable for me to make brief comments on the problem defined by me. We can order the questions like this: (1) What is the level of the suitability of the contents of the chosen course books to teach the foreign language and the goals of the second language learning?; (2) What kind of learning activities do the teachers use in the course?; (3) How do the aims meet the needs of the students?; (4) What difficulties have the teachers faced while designing and preparing their course curriculums? A reliable questionnaire prepared with the help of some experts and according to their point of views has been applied to the teachers in some secondary and high schools in Erzurum directed by the Ministry of Education to have the data related with the problem defined by us. (Contains 1 table and 12 graphs.).

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - Pedagogic Sociology, grade: 3,0, University of Vechta, course: Spracherwerbs- und Sprachlehrforschung. Learning and Teaching Languages, language: English, abstract: [...] At the beginning of the semester, the students of the course concerned with the topic of “How Languages are Learned” were asked to give an immediate response to several popular opinions. With the benefit of hindsight, one of the most interesting responses was that I ascribed much importance to the following statement: “The earlier a second language is introduced in school programmes, the greater the likelihood of success in learning.”(cf. L&S, p. xvii), and I am sure that many of my fellow students agreed strongly as well. After having studied several theories and research findings concerning this question – the question whether there is the age in which a second language learner should start to get into contact with a foreign language- I could conclude that this question cannot be answered simply by “yes” or “no” since there is a great number of factors influencing success. Learners vary a lot in terms of their brain’s development, their intelligence, their environment in which a second language is spoken, etc. pp. Furthermore, in order to answer the age-question, it is important to be aware of a certain goal of second language acquisition. Is it pronouncing words like a native-speaker? Is it being able to take part in conversations? These factors and questions should thus also be analyzed. Consequently, I would like to present basic theories about this subject as well as research findings and, as explained above, other factors influencing second language acquisition in the following. The results will be supported by my own way of acquiring a second language and will then form the basis for the consequences educators should consider when planning foreign language lessons. Since we used “How Languages are Learned” by Patsy M. Lightbown and Nina Spada as an introduction to this topic, my elementary knowledge is based on this book. [...]

Book excerpt: The book presents theoretical considerations as well as the results of empirical research on the existence of “directed motivational current” (DMC) experiences among Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in order to provide insights into how a DMC is triggered and launched, and to explore whether the key characteristics of DMCs could be detected in language learners' experiences in Iran. Although Dörnyei et al. (2016) claimed that language learners who experience a DMC may have an amalgamation of several positive emotions, they did not present any evidence of whether these feelings exert any impact on learners' willingness to take part in language learning situations (willingness to communicate (WTC)), their confidence to use their L2, their self-perceptions, and the extent to which they independently try to learn English inside and outside the classroom context (language learner autonomy). This book extensively studies DMCs in an EFL setting and examines how such experiences affect language learners' WTC, self-concept, language learner autonomy, and self-confidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the focus of inquiry into the psychology of SLA has shifted from the analysis of various characteristics within individuals towards a greater consideration of individuals’ dynamic interactions with diverse contexts. This revisit of the bestselling The Psychology of the Language Learner reflects on these developments by challenging some of the assumptions upon which the original text was based, maintaining the familiar structure of the original, while situating the discussion within a very different theoretical framework. Written in a lively, accessible style, the book considers how the field has evolved and maintains a keen eye on the future, suggesting exciting new directions for the psychology of SLA. The Psychology of the Language Learner Revisited will appeal to students and researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including applied linguistics, second language acquisition, modern languages, and psychology.
