Book Synopsis The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen by : A. Krishna Sinha
Download or read book The Nature of Magmatism in the Appalachian Orogen written by A. Krishna Sinha and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal evolution of mountain belts is recorded inthe distribution, origin and ages of magnatism. In this volume, petrologic, isotopic and geochemical evidence is presented to highlight the contribution of igneous rocks to the evolution of the Appalachian Orogen in both Canada and the United States. These papers emphasize the use of modern geochemical and petrologic data to discriminate the sources yielding magmas, and thus the nature of the crust and mantle.
Book Synopsis From Rodinia to Pangea by : Richard P. Tollo
Download or read book From Rodinia to Pangea written by Richard P. Tollo and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Appalachians constitute one of Earth's major tectonic features and have served as a springboard for innovative geologic thought for more than 170 years. This volume contains 36 original papers reporting the results of research performed throughout nearly the entire length and breadth of the Appalachian region, including all major provinces and geographical areas. Memoir 206 was designed to commemorate the (near-)fortieth anniversary of the publication of the classic Studies of Appalachian Geology volumes that appeared just prior to the application of plate tectonic concepts to the region. Contributions concerning structural evolution, sedimentation, stratigraphy, magmatic processes, metamorphism, tectonics, and terrane accretion illustrate the wide range of ongoing research in the area and collectively serve to mark the considerable progress in scientific thought that has occurred during the past four decades."--pub. desc.
Book Synopsis Linkages and Feedbacks in Orogenic Systems by : Richard D. Law
Download or read book Linkages and Feedbacks in Orogenic Systems written by Richard D. Law and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to Bob Hatcher, this Memoir explores linkages between tectonic processes through a series of field-, numerical- and laboratory-based studies, concentrating on feedback mechanisms within ancient and evolving orogens by which individual or linked tectonic processes may influence or predetermine the operation of other processes in space and time. Case studies cover a wide range of ancient to modern orogens: the Svecofennian of southern Finland, the Gyeonggi Massif of Korea, the Caledonides of northern Scotland, the Variscan of the East European craton, the Appalachians of the eastern United States, the European Alps and Dinarides, north Cascades of the northwestern United States, and the Himalaya. Emphasis is placed on integration between data sets developed from a wide range of analytical approaches, including: field mapping, seismic reflection profiling, strain analyses, petrology, isotopic dating, and numerical modeling-based studies of thermal evolution associated with tectonic processes such as thrust-related burial and exhumation.

Book Synopsis Betts Cove Ophiolite and Its Cover Rocks, Newfoundland by : Jean H. Bédard
Download or read book Betts Cove Ophiolite and Its Cover Rocks, Newfoundland written by Jean H. Bédard and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Betts Cove area of the Baie Verte Peninsula, northern Newfoundland, is of interest for its mineral exploration history and for its ophiolitic complex formed through sea floor spreading. This study attempts to resolve some of the unresolved problems related to the area's stratigraphy, the magmatic affinity of its plutonic section, and the geologic controls on ore deposition. The report presents a revised stratigraphy for the area; a petrologic description of the rock units of the Betts Cove ophiolite, Snooks Arm Group, adjoining ophiolitic rocks, and post-Ordovician rocks; a history of structural deformation in the area; information on mineral chemistry, geochemistry, and petrogenesis; and tectonic models illustrating the evolution of the ophiolite and its cover rocks. The final section describes mineral deposits & occurrences in the area, including historic volcanogenic copper/sulphide mines, the currently producing Nugget Pond mine, and various gold occurrences.

A sampling of topics turns up the driving mechanism and three-dimensional circulation of plate tectonics, the Belt-Purcell Basic as the keystone of the Rocky Mountain fold-and-thrust belt in the US and Canada, Silurian-Devonian orogenic events in the central Appalachians and the crystalline southern Appalachians, and defining the eastern boundary of the North Asian craton from structural and subsidence history studies of the Verkhoyansk fold-and-thrust belt. A fold-out sheet of color maps and diagrams is tucked into a pocket inside the back cover.
