Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Narsh Poultry System Two-pound broilers are being produced in seven to eight weeks, bringing from 40 to 50 cents apiece, and broilers raised under this system always find a ready market. It will be still more surprising to know that under this system a single hen will produce $25 worth of broilers in a year, and they are even doing better than that. A good hen will produce 150 eggs a year, and, if properly fed, 90 per cent of the eggs will hatch, making 135 chicks; and under this system 90 per cent will be raised, making fully 120 broilers. The reader can figure out what a 150 egg hen will produce. Hens properly bred and cared for under this system will produce 150 eggs a year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philo System of Progressive Poultry Keeping Our experience in poultry keeping dates back over a period of thirty years, and the mistakes made during that time, if properly explained, would fill a book much larger than this one. While many of our mistakes were expensive and discouraging, we were determined to win out, and as the failures came, we had the opportunity to study the causes, and again start from the foundation to overcome the difficulties. Many times the discoveries were surprising to us, as they will, no doubt, be to you, and were not put down as facts until each of them had been tested for at least five years, and many of them much longer. We have learned that artificial heat supplied to chickens is not only unnecessary, but better poultry may be raised without it. The average ordinary wood brooder is too complicated, expensive, and there is too much danger of chilling, overheating, or burning the chickens. When they come into this world they are supplied with an abundance of heat and all we have to do is to retain it. When green cut bone is fed liberally to breeding stock, good eggs from which to hatch strong chickens are not obtained, neither are the eggs likely to be fertile. The best two pound broilers can be raised when confined to a space of one square foot, when there are not too many in the flock. Pullets may be properly matured in a space of one and a half square feet, and a laying hen will do her best when given three square feet of Space. While it is generally. Understood that the largest egg yields from laying hens are obtained from the smallest flocks, the system is not in general use. It is not uncommon to get six eggs from six hens in a flock seven consecutive days. To get sixty eggs from sixty hens in a flock, one day in a year is hardly possible, and, as far as our knowledge goes, is not on record. Sixty hens properly bred and kept in ten colony coops will lay sixty eggs per day many days in the year, and at least twenty - five per cent. More eggs than the flock containing sixty hens. When chicks do their best they must also be kept in small flocks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tricks of the Poultry Trade You can get paying returns from your adds only by reaching people interested in poultry who have the money and the will to buy your stock and eggs. You can't fine a richer poultry field than the great grain and poultry producing middle Southwest - Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska, etc. You know, as does every schoolboy, that these states lead in corn, wheat, poultry and livestock. These people have the money to buy. Kansas alone raised eighty million dollars worth of wheat in 1909. Missouri sells forty million dollars worth of poultry a year. And the other states are right along with these two. Then there is the will to buy. It's proverbial how quick to trade - buy or sell - the western people are. And these progressive poultry people with the money are justly noted as good spenders. Poultry Culture reaches the people who raise poultry in this field better than any other medium, because it is located in the heart of this rich belt - it is in touch with the industry and is a live wire. Every issue is readable and is read closely by twenty thousand subscribers. Then the advertising rates are reasonable - they are in fact low considering circulation and returns advertisers get. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kellerstrass Way of Raising Poultry I have been several years writing this small book, and the reason it took me so long was because I would not write anything until I had tried it out satisfactorily, and the best advice I can give anyone who is about to embark in the poultry business is, start small, and learn it as you grow; then you are sure of success, and no matter what breed of chick ens you start with, first find out the kind that you like best; then go to that breeder's farm and buy the best birds that your money will buy. A good foundation is the main thing in any line of business. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Poultry Pay: By the Philo System; North, South, East and West The possibilities for a profitable business with intensive poultry culture have never been so plainly visible as at the present time. We believe that greater strides in scientific poultry breeding will be made during the next five years than have been made in all the time past. While it is possible for one person to accomplish wonderful results in any one line of work, the greatest successes are had when the combined efforts of many people of ability are concentrated on a certain line of work. This Philo System Booklet is published for the purpose of bringing together the experiences of successful poultry keepers, that the combined efforts of some of the best talent may be used for the advancement of our chosen occupation in a way to do the greatest amount of good to the largest number of people. We could not be of greater service to mankind than in helping to provide away by which waste material may be converted into the most valuable food. While we hope and expect to help many more thousands of people to establish a profitable poultry business, we would be satisfied if able to do no more than to help many to a better living and happier homes by utilizing waste material and to provide means for them to study nature and the natural instinct of birds. The table scraps that are now being thrown away in thousands of homes may be used to produce more eggs than an equal number of families have to use, and there are many things in the city garden and on the farm that can be turned into the most valuable food. There is nothing in our opinion that would more surely help to correct the evil of trusts and the unnecessarily high prices of food than to provide means that would enable every family to produce the most delicious food right in their own yards at less than half the cost of other food at trust prices. Conditions are not as they should be when it is necessary to pay the price of a half days wages to buy meat for the dinner of a small family. There is nothing of greater value for the production of eggs or growing the broilers, than lawn clippings, either green or dried. At present they are generally thrown away or burned. Our lawn has never been more attractive to us than when its weekly returns in fine clippings are converted into valuable eggs or poultry, and it has never looked right to us to see so much good land and labor for ornamental purposes only, when there are not sufficient means to provide the necessary food from the regular income. We certainly approve of attractive homes, but we are sure they will be a greater source of pleasure if every inch of land is made to pay, as well as to look attractive. While the improved methods of poultry keeping have already been tested and have proven a success, it is also true that the most beautiful flowers, vegetables, berries and poultry can be raised on the same plot of ground with the most abundant yield and a better quality, by the combination of poultry with the garden. The best people are no longer ashamed to be connected with the poultry industry as in former years, when it was considered a side issue to a farm or something for people to do whose time was not very valuable. This accounts for the thousands of years required to master the problems of scientific poultry breeding. With the cooperation of the half million readers of this publication we hope to do much to advance the intesest and knowledge of poultry.
