Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since long ago scientists have been trying hard to show up the core of glaucoma. To its understanding we needed to penetrate gradually to its molecular level. The newest pieces of knowledge about the molecular biology of glaucoma are presented in the first section. The second section deals with the clinical problems of glaucoma. Ophthalmologists and other medical staff may find here more important understandings for doing their work. What would our investigation be for, if not owing to the people’s benefit? The third section is full of new perspectives on glaucoma. After all, everybody believes and relies – more or less – on bits of hopes of a better future. Just let us engage in the mystery of glaucoma, to learn how to cure it even to prevent suffering from it. Each information in this book is an item of great importance as a precious stone behind which genuine, through and honest piece of work should be observed.

Book excerpt: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Currently, we still don't have an agreement on its pathogenesis. About one million nerve fibers originate from the retina and leave the eyeball via the lamina cribrosa and the optic nerve carrying images of what we see to the brain for processing. The author presents a novel approach in solving the mystery of glaucoma. Instead of looking for various factors causing glaucoma, his research focuses primarily on the orderly loss of nerve fibers. Dr. Hasnain's Sinking and Severance Theory is a paradigm shift to the current establishment of glaucoma research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Glaucoma, the latest in the Hirschberg series of the history of ophthalmology, covers the twists, turns, and paradigm-shifts in the glaucoma concept over the past two millennia. Previously, scholars were not able to agree on how the term glaucoma, which related in antiquity to the color of a diseased eye, ended up describing an excavated optic neuropathy which has nothing to do with color. The volume begins in the ancient world, and proceeds all the way to the modern era of optical coherence tomography, minimally invasive surgery, and anti-VEGF agents. Ophthalmic historians and glaucoma specialists from the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America have contributed their scholarship and recollections to this volume, which includes photographs from private collections, information from unpublished documents, and new translations from Latin, Arabic, French, German, and Spanish. The work of masters such as Julius Hirschberg and Max Meyerhof is supplemented by the latest scholarship, which has benefited from the explosion in digitally-accessible historical documents. This new scholarship has upended many deeply rooted beliefs about ophthalmology history. Most important, the volume relates the personal stories of eye surgeons and patients, to bring the past to life. The History of Glaucoma is a must-have for anyone interested in medical history.

Book excerpt: Sight is the major gateway to lining. Worldwide, glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent loss of sight. But if people with glaucoma care for themselves well, they rarely become blind from glaucoma. This book aims to empower individuals by discussing important aspects of glaucoma in an accessible manner, with clear illustrations and helpful analogies. It focuses on ways the individual can take responsibility for his or her own health and live well, through being informed and practicing good self-care. While glaucoma stands at the center of this book, the concepts also apply to other diseases and life in general. Much of the available advice on health is so generic, so self-serving, and so incorrect it is not helpful to the individual seeking sound advice. This book was written to be useful to all those wanting to learn about glaucoma, see well, and be well. Dr. Spaeth has been caring for people with glaucoma for over 50 years and was voted the most influential eye doctor in the world by other eye doctors. Dr. Ichhpujani adds to the book the point of view of a busy, widely respected eye doctor practicing in India.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glaucoma Its Causes, Symptoms, Pathology, and Treatment The commonly adopted division of glaucomatous diseases into a primary and a secondary group is here retained. Recent discoveries have tended, in some measure, to Show that this division is arbitrary, and, on scientific grounds, untenable; that, primary glaucoma, if the term indicate a condition in which a rise of the intraocular pressure is antecedent to any structural change, does not exist, and that secondary glaucoma includes conditions the etiology of which entitles them to be classed with the primary. Granting that this is true, I believe that, practically, the division is both Simple and useful; and, further, I believe that, with a few Slight exceptions, it classifies glaucomatous diseases in strict accordance with fundamental differ. Book excerpt: Glaucoma is a frequent eye condition in which vision is lost as a result of damage to the optic nerve. This condition can lead to blindness. The information necessary for vision is transmitted from the eye to the brain via the optic nerve. The optic nerve is typically harmed whenever there is an increase in the pressure of the fluid that is located in the anterior segment of the eye. Despite this, damage to the eye caused by glaucoma can still occur even when the fluid pressure is normal. Fluid moves without restriction within the eye, but the intraocular pressure has a tendency to gradually increase over time in the most prevalent type of glaucoma, called primary open-angle glaucoma. In most cases, the only sign is a slow but steady loss of vision.
