Book Synopsis The Mysterious Parable by : Madeleine Boucher
Download or read book The Mysterious Parable written by Madeleine Boucher and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the parable as a literary construct. It addresses the question why the ancients understood parables as mysterious speech. The study disputes the binary opposition of (clear) parables and (obscure) allegories. Defining allegory as an extended metaphor in narratory form, it argues that many parables are allegories. The parable is defined as narrative in form; tropical in mode of meaning; religious or ethical in genre; and rhetorical in purpose, intended to persuade. Requiring (sometimes challenging) interpretation, the parable can rightly be considered “mysterious.” The monograph then discusses the parable in the context of Mark’s theme of mystery.

Book Synopsis The Rabbinic Parables and Jesus the Parable Teller by : David Flusser
Download or read book The Rabbinic Parables and Jesus the Parable Teller written by David Flusser and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in German as Die rabbinschen Gleichnisse und der Gleichniserzähler Jesus in 1981—and now translated into English for the first time—this seminal work by Professor David Flusser remains an important and unparalleled contribution on Jesus as a storyteller in the Jewish rabbinic tradition. Using a literary approach to study extant rabbinic parables, he argues that Jesus’ parables belong to a genre that exists only in rabbinic literature and the New Testament. In order to analyze the theology behind Jesus’ parables, we need to understand them as a first-century literary art form. In a summary of the book, Flusser writes: “I am firmly convinced with fellow researchers that it is possible to get reasonably close to the original wording of Jesus’ teaching. But this is only the case when the otherwise usual method of literary criticism is applied to the text of the Synoptic Gospels, and when, moreover, one is willing and able to be guided by knowledge of Judaism. I certainly admit that the words of Jesus, including his parables, were edited by Greek redactors and subsequently by the evangelists. Nevertheless, I believe it is often possible to separate the ‘shell’ from the ‘nut’ by applying a better synoptic theory. . . . As I have argued several times, the parables of Jesus belong to the genre of the rabbinic parables. Therefore, valid statements about Jesus’ parables, whether these regard their essence or their literary quality, can only be made when one has first dealt with the essence and literary form of the rabbinic parables.”
Book Synopsis The Gospel in Parable by : John R. Donahue
Download or read book The Gospel in Parable written by John R. Donahue and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Donahue here argues that "the parables of Jesus" offer a Gospel in miniature, while at the same time giving shape, direction, and meaning to the Gospels in which they appear. "To study the parables of the Gospels is to study the gospel in parable." After surveying recent discussions of parable, metaphor, and narrative, Donahue examines and interprets the parables of Mark, Matthew, and Luke as texts in the context of the theology of each of these Gospels. Finally, he outlines what "The Gospel in Parable" looks like and offers suggestions for the proclamation of parables today.

Book Synopsis The Matthean Parables by : Ivor H. Jones
Download or read book The Matthean Parables written by Ivor H. Jones and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Matthean Parables offers a fresh approach to the origin of Matthew's Gospel. It builds on current historical, literary, rhetorical and sociological studies of Matthew's Gospel to show how the Matthean parables illuminate the structure, purpose and theology of that gospel. The first part of the book establishes the need for a new attempt to define the genre of Matthew's Gospel, examines what is meant by a parable, and summarises the contribution made by the parables to that new attempt. The second part is a thorough exegetical, historical critical and literary study of all the Matthean parables in the context of the whole gospel and in the light of all the Matthean figurative material. An appendix illustrates the use of syntactical material in defining the character and style of a biblical text.

This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all love stories, especially mysteries. When we were young children, our parents, grandparents, or friends would read us stories. Stories and mysteries are passed down from generation to generation. This book is about a story and a mystery, and who doesn't love a good mystery? The Parable of the Four Soils concerns a sower (Jesus) who scatters seed (The Word), which falls on four different types of ground (the hearts of people). The wayside soil (the closed, hardened, and neglected heart) prevents the seed from sprouting at all, and the seed becomes nothing more than bird food. The stony soil (the careless heart) provides enough soil for the seeds to germinate and begin to grow, but because there is "no deepness of earth," the plants are soon withered in the sun (trials and persecution). The thorny soil (the crowded heart) allows the seed to grow, but the four competing thorns choke the life out of the young plants. The good soil (the cultivated heart) receives the seed and produces much fruit. What has all of this to do with knowing the keys to the kingdom of God? It's in the book "The Parable of the Four Soils." Come, take a fresh look at an old story.
Book Synopsis Matthew’s Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast by : Ruth Christa Mathieson
Download or read book Matthew’s Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast written by Ruth Christa Mathieson and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2023-06-02 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Christa Mathieson’s unique reading of Matthew’s parable of the royal wedding feast (Matt 22:1–14), which concludes with the king’s demand that one of the guests be bound and cast out into the outer darkness, focuses on the means of the underdressed guest’s expulsion. Using sociorhetorical interpretation, Mathieson draws the parable into conversation with early Jewish narratives of the angel Raphael binding hands and feet (1 Enoch; Tobit) and the protocol for expelling individuals from the community in Matt 18. She asserts that readers are invited to consider if the person who is bound and cast out is a danger to the little ones of the community of faith unless removed and restrained.

Book Synopsis The Parable of the Wicked Tenants by : Klyne Snodgrass
Download or read book The Parable of the Wicked Tenants written by Klyne Snodgrass and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its importance, the parable of the wicked tenants has been an enigma to modern interpretation. The approaches to the parable have been quite varied. Some interpreters place this parable at the apex of the ministry of Jesus, while others assign little importance to it or virtually ignore it. In some cases the conclusions drawn have been unsatisfactory either because of presuppositions that are too rigid or that have been shown to be erroneous by recent developments. Any discussion of the parable is necessarily a complex one in that it involves the relation of the three Synoptic accounts, an assessment of the account in the Gospel of Thomas, the religious and economic background in Palestine, the self-designation of Jesus, and the theological shaping of the parable by the tradition and by evangelists. Because of the importance of this parable as a possible key to understanding the ministry of Jesus, particularly since its relevance has often been minimized, this parable deserves closer analysis.

Book Synopsis The Authenticity of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares and Its Interpretation by : Ramesh Khatry
Download or read book The Authenticity of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares and Its Interpretation written by Ramesh Khatry and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis seeks to demonstrate the authenticity (as dominical teaching) of the parable of the darnel (Mt 13:24-30) and its interpretation (Mt 13:36-43). The interpretation in particular is almost universally regarded as non-dominical, notably by J Jeremias and his followers. My thesis argues that the whole of Mt 13:36-43 (and Mt 13:24-30) should be seen as dominical. The 'introduction' gives a brief survey of parabolic studies, and outlines the case against the authenticity of Mt 13:24-30,36-43. Chapter AI defends the authenticity of the parable (Mt 13:24-30). The following chapters do the same for the interpretation (Mt 13:36-43), looking at the 'Son of Man' and related teaching (chapter BI), the 'kingdom of God' (BII), 'righteousness' and 'lawlessness' (BIII), and other motifs (BIV), and finally the question of the coherence of the parable and its interpretation (BV). My approach has been negatively to demonstrate the weakness of the scholarly arguments against authenticity and positively to offer a case for authenticity via (a) a study of background, including special study of the rural Palestinian practices and of relevant Jewish theological ideas, and (b) a careful use of the criterion of multiple attestation which demonstrates that our material is linguistically and theologically coherent with other well-attested Jesus tradition. The originality of the work lies apart from anything else in the fact that a full length defence of the authenticity of Mt 13:24-30,36-43 has not been attempted before. But we have also brought to bear various insights, canvassed in other contexts, but not specifically in connexion with Mt 13:24-30,36-43, e.g. suggesting a background to the Son of Man tradition in Ezekiel and the Similitudes of Enoch, making use of the Old Testament concept of God as farmer, explaining the agricultural background to the parable and interpretation.

Book Synopsis Stories with Intent by : Klyne R. Snodgrass
Download or read book Stories with Intent written by Klyne R. Snodgrass and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2009 Christianity Today Award for Biblical Studies, Stories with Intent offers pastors and students a comprehensive and accessible guide to Jesus' parables. Klyne Snodgrass explores in vivid detail the historical context in which these stories were told, the part they played in Jesus' overall message, and the ways in which they have been interpreted in the church and the academy. Snodgrass begins by surveying the primary issues in parables interpretation and providing an overview of other parables—often neglected in the discussion—from the Old Testament, Jewish writings, and the Greco-Roman world. He then groups the more important parables of Jesus thematically and offers a comprehensive treatment of each, exploring both background and significance for today. This tenth anniversary edition includes a substantial new chapter that surveys developments in the interpretation of parables since the book's original 2008 publication.
