Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" is a detective novel by Agatha Christie. It was written in the middle of World War I, in 1916, and first published by John Lane in the United States in October 1920 and in the United Kingdom by The Bodley Head on 21 January 1921. Styles was Christie's first published novel, introducing Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp, and Arthur Hastings. The story is told in first person by Hastings and features many of the elements that have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, largely due to Christie's influence. It is set in a large, isolated country manor. There are a half-dozen suspects, most of whom are hiding facts about themselves. The book includes maps of the house, the murder scene, and a drawing of a fragment of a will, as well as a number of red herrings and surprise plot twists. "The Secret Adversary" is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie, first published in the United Kingdom by The Bodley Head in January 1922. The book introduces the characters of Tommy and Tuppence who feature in three other Christie books and one collection of short stories written throughout her writing career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysterious Affair at Styles isn’t just Agatha Christie’s first Poirot novel, it was the only Poirot novel in the public domain until 2019. It was written on a bet that Christie couldn’t write a detective novel in which the reader couldn’t deduce the criminal. Her attempt laid the foundation for one of literature’s most famous detectives. In this novel we’re introduced to Poirot as he’s settling in to a new life in England. After a woman is murdered at the country estate he’s visiting, he has to use his detective skills to catch the criminal. The Mysterious Affair at Styles sets the stage for the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, and has everything you’d expect from a story rich in those classic detective fiction tropes. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: It has been one hundred years since Agatha Christie wrote her first novel and created the formidable Hercule Poirot. A brilliant and award winning biographer, Laura Thompson now turns her sharp eye to Agatha Christie. Arguably the greatest crime writer in the world, Christie's books still sell over four million copies each year—more than thirty years after her death—and it shows no signs of slowing. But who was the woman behind these mystifying, yet eternally pleasing, puzzlers? Thompson reveals the Edwardian world in which Christie grew up, explores her relationships, including those with her two husbands and daughter, and investigates the many mysteries still surrounding Christie's life, most notably, her eleven-day disappearance in 1926.Agatha Christie is as mysterious as the stories she penned, and writing about her is a detection job in itself. With unprecedented access to all of Christie's letters, papers, and notebooks, as well as fresh and insightful interviews with her grandson, daughter, son-in-law and their living relations, Thompson is able to unravel not only the detailed workings of Christie's detective fiction, but the truth behind this mysterious woman.

Book excerpt: Miss Ethel Browne is a typical adornment of her era. A single lady of a certain age in the period before the First World War usually assists a senior, or less healthy family member with the running of their house, or affords help of a more modest kind, in order to feel useful. Sometimes they are inspired to approach places of last resort to befriend and encourage poor unfortunates. In Miss Browne's case the Rescue Home pairs her with Mabel Roberts, who has had a terrible start in life, and has fallen into dubious ways. Miss Browne is somewhat dazzled by Mabel's beauty, and charmed by her simple transparency and determination to be good. She finds Mabel a good position as general maid to two elderly ladies, and all seems set fair. But, as the months go by, so do the reports of arguments, temper and secretiveness. Positions come and go, as Miss Browne struggles to help Mabel surmount her failings and find a foothold in the better life. Having 'slipped' somewhat, in a position as a waitress in a restaurant, Mabel disappears. In the end, Miss Browne finds her, only to discover that life has dealt Mabel a harsher blow. Miss Browne's Friend was originally published in four parts between June 1914 and March 1915 in the Free Church Suffrage Times, a year after the publication of F. M. Mayor's celebrated first novel, The Third Miss Symons. With its mixture of wry humour and tragedy, it confirmed her reputation as one of the most sensitive exponents of the challenges and uncertainties of single women's lives in her times.

Book excerpt: Hercule Poirot made his first public appearance in 1920 at the age, one guesses, of about 60. He finally breathed his metaphorical last in 1975 at the age of maybe 75 or 80. And in that short span of time - either 55 years or about 20, depending on how you count it - Poirot became one of England's most profitable and ubiquitous export commodities. But it's very clear that his creator, Agatha Christie, did not at first intend for it to go that way. She made a very definite attempt to end the Hercule Poirot saga in the mid-1920s, when his story consisted simply of three novels and 25 short stories. It is that first Hercule Poirot bibliography, the one Christie clearly intended to leave for posterity when she typed up the last few words of "The Crag in the Dolomites" sometime in 1924, that is presented in this collection.

A refugee of the Great War, Poirot is settling in England near Styles Court, the country estate of his wealthy benefactress, the elderly Emily Inglethorp. When Emily is poisoned and the authorities are baffled, Poirot puts his prodigious sleuthing skills to work. Suspects are plentiful, including the victim’s much younger husband, her resentful stepsons, her longtime hired companion, a young family friend working as a nurse, and a London specialist on poisons who just happens to be visiting the nearby village. All of them have secrets they are desperate to keep, but none can outwit Poirot as he navigates the ingenious red herrings and plot twists that earned Agatha Christie her well-deserved reputation as the queen of mystery.
