Book excerpt: There are moments in the Halls of Antiquities or Images that come and go, but the Hieroglyphics scattered in the firing of the Neurons in our DNA just begin when they're recognizable in our Conscious thoughts, bearing those properties of Reflections. Human consciousness is just one of many Gestalts on the palettes of the multitudinous images we conceive during our shared glimpses of Mother Nature that surround us all of the time. Herein lies a few of my extrapolations to that decree. On with the show then, this it it, No More Researching and Nursing of Parts. You cannot then, Petition the " Steven " with prayer, just hope whatever you get all over yourself before you finish, some or all of it will Settle the Score.

Book excerpt: The concluding volume in a three part essay series, Where the Dust Settles, examines the characteristics and use of adobe ‘mud brick’ in the arid US Southwest. Considerations encompass its appropriation rectifying the absence of lumber, its use to fashion residences giving rise to communities serving Gold Rush driven prospectors, its adaptation to cultural expression at Stagecoach service facilities, its survival as architectural remnants into modern times, and its potential to yield significant Historical information. The previous volume II Dusty Trails to Shiny Rails explores the origins and administration of communication technology in the newly acquired American frontier. Volume I, Ancient Footpaths, examines the origins of pre Euro-American networks of Trails & Traces. Cumulatively this essay series provides an entertaining overview of this aspect of American ingenuity. Hybridizing History and Anthropology, using an approach tailored to preservation, analysis focuses on Trail characteristics in prehistoric, historic, and modern times with a final focus on the possible future of these irreplaceable linear artifacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White Sandy Reservation needs a doctor, and Madeline Mitchell needs to do a little good in the world. It seems like a perfect fit, until she meets the medicine man, Rebel Runs Fast. As far as Madeline can tell, Rebel's sole mission is to convince her patients that modern medicine can't help them. And the fact that he makes her heart race every time he looks at her only irritates her more. Rebel swore off the white man's world–and women–years ago. But he's never met a woman like Dr. Mitchell. She doesn't speak the language, understand the customs, or believe he's anything more than a charlatan–but she stays, determined to help his people. He tries to convince himself that his tribe doesn't need her, but when patients start getting sick with strange symptoms, he realizes that he needs her more than ever. Note: This book was previously published as Mystic Cowboy Finalist in the 2014 Booksellers Best Award contest and the 2014 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence contest Mystic Cowboy is filled with tension, Lakota beliefs, a little science, and a whole lot of romance…Filled with history, and rich descriptions of each scene, this modern day Western/Romance/Intrigue/Medical novel has lassoed five stars from me.–Tome Tender Book Blog Four stars! Both generosity and greed play an important part in this love story where the tension mounts as illness threatens the entire reservation. Excellent character development is the highlight of Anderson's tale — Madeline and Rebel are often at odds as Rebel struggles to maintain his heritage and lifestyle while keeping Madeline by his side.—RT Book Reviews There is so much more to this story than hunky-cowboy-who-just-happens-to-be-a-Lakota Indian meets white city girl. Cultural differences create difficulties in Madeline and Rebel's relationship beyond just medicine man vs. doctor of medicine. However, the attraction between Madeline and Rebel is there from the start and heats up nicely. Don't miss Mystic Cowboy, and be on the lookout for the next installment in the series.–Library Journal I was hooked on this book from the beginning. Maddie's big life change was fascinating to read about, and I liked her character quite a bit. However, Rebel steals the show. He is enigmatic, sexy and so perfect for Maddie that I couldn't put "Mystic Cowboy" down…If you like contemporary stories about Native Americans and/or cowboys, you can't miss with "Mystic Cowboy." It is a delight to read, with a sensational blend of suspense, sexiness and romance.—Romance Novel News

Book excerpt: As a preface to a consideration of stagecoaching in the mid-1800s Southwest and West, Ancient Footsteps examines what the Tribal Representatives, Anthropologists, and Archaeologists of today understand about the origins of ancient trails over which many later transportation and communication developed. Considering their ancient appearance, stability through time, adaptability, and later, European appropriation, it sets the stage for commercial and technological change to follow. Using an approach tailored to preservation of these ancient artifacts of mankind, discussion focuses on trail characteristics in prehistoric, historic, and modern times with a final focus on the possible future of these irreplaceable linear artifacts.

Book excerpt: Adolph F. Bandelier, Charles Fletcher Lummis, and Father Anton Docher are names closely associated with the early colonial days in New Mexico. All of these characters appear in this narrative of Isleta Pueblo which tells the story of Father Docher's life in the Indian pueblo from the day when he first arrived along the road that was bad, but the sunset beautiful in 1891 until the time of the death of his two great friends, Bandelier and Lummis, and his own death several months later in 1928. Father Docher's job was not an easy one, but his great patience and understanding helped him through many difficulties. The story goes into many of these and into much of the legend and superstition of Isleta Pueblo which the Padre encountered during his long life there. He was particularly interested in the story of Father Padilla, the Franciscan friar who came with Coronado's band, whose body was buried in the church at Isleta but which refused to stay underground. Julia Keleher was a member and Professor in the English Department of the University of New Mexico from 1931 to her retirement in 1959. She was also a professional writer and edited each of her brother, William A. Keleher's books, all of which have been published by Sunstone Press in its Southwest Heritage Series. Her collaboration with Elsie Ruth Chant resulted in this fascinating collection of incidents for all readers interested in the American Southwest. She was married to Lloyd Chant and raised two children, George Ashley Chant and Julia Jane Chant.
