Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual and Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, 1900 Through an unaccountable error, an excellent article on the Diseases of the Lens (page 337, fourth volume), written by Dr. F. W. Marlow, of Syracuse, was credited to his colleague on the staff, Dr. Edward Jackson, of Denver. The editor greatly regrets this mistake which deprives Dr. Marlow of the credit to which he is so thoroughly entitled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, Vol. 16: April, 1902 Joseph, in Medical Standard, states that an ointment containing bromine and tannin is of great service in the treatment of all forms of pruritus. The bromine, according to his state ment, is used for its anaesthetic properties and the tannin for its astringent effects. He prescribes an ointment composed of bromine 20 per cent., and tannin, 40 per cent. He states that the action of this Ointment is increased by the alkaline secre tion of the skin, without producing any irritation. He uses as a base a 10 to 30-per-cent. Jelly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, 1904, Vol. 18 Unfortunately, even such evidence will fail to overcome prejudice based on fear. Indeed, if all the reasons adduced by the militant opponents of vaccination are reduced to their simplest expression, they amount mainly to the dread of inoculation by the vaccine virus, matter, poison from diseased tissues, etc. Such impressions statistics will not counteract. That the same thought underlies the objections to the procedure in the public mind - though in a less clearly defined way - is readily ascertained when objectors are asked to give their reasons. It seems evident, therefore, that rather than speak of the ignorance of these people, as some writers are wont to do, we should aim to subdue their apprehension by pointing to the marked progress made within the last ten years, precisely in the direction from which their fears emanate, and to eliminate the causes of their apprehension. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, 1902, Vol. 16 The classification of the anaemias of infancy offers many difficulties. Prac tically, the subject has hardly advanced beyond the very simple order introduced by Monti, that primary anaemia is the pernicious form, that secondary anaemias are mild and severe, and that a leuco cytosis may or may not be present. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational chemistry has become extremely important in the last decade, being widely used in academic and industrial research. Yet there have been few books designed to teach the subject to nonspecialists. Computational Chemistry: Introduction to the Theory and Applications of Molecular and Quantum Mechanics is an invaluable tool for teaching and researchers alike. The book provides an overview of the field, explains the basic underlying theory at a meaningful level that is not beyond beginners, and it gives numerous comparisons of different methods with one another and with experiment. The following concepts are illustrated and their possibilities and limitations are given: - potential energy surfaces; - simple and extended Hückel methods; - ab initio, AM1 and related semiempirical methods; - density functional theory (DFT). Topics are placed in a historical context, adding interest to them and removing much of their apparently arbitrary aspect. The large number of references, to all significant topics mentioned, should make this book useful not only to undergraduates but also to graduate students and academic and industrial researchers.
