Book excerpt: My name is Alain Stephens Jr. I'm studying civil engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Just a guy trying to lead a normal life. Well, as normal a life as one can lead when one's father is the first Haitian-born Canadian Supreme Court Judge, one's mother is an activist, and one is afflicted with M.S. Been a rough year. My girlfriend Khadija Osman didn't react well when I told her that I'm Bisexual ( haven't explored it yet ). My best friend Jeremy Chan has grown distant. I was quite despondent until I met Dr. Gabriel Pontes, a strange little man who promised me he could cure me. Thanks to his Formula, my M.S. is dormant, and I'm stronger and faster than I've ever been. Practically superhuman. Oh, and there are Stalkers after me and I'm slowly becoming a man-sized frigging Mongoose ! Help !

Book excerpt: It was all just a big misunderstanding. Not on Team Mongooses part, but that of the King Cobra Cartel thinking it could bring down a mongoose. A king cobra snake has no chance in a fight with a mongoose. The cartel had no clue that Team Mongoose ate cobras for lunch. There is not a snake in the world that can match the speed of a mongoose. Thats the truth! However, speed was only one of the teams weapons; we had many more. The time had come for Team Mongoose to show the worlds underground drug lords, thieves, murderers, and rapists that the mongoose was here to stay and fight; it does not matter where you are or how much money you have, you better not cross paths with the mongoose. Our team is ready to bite the head off of any cartel snake stealing life and innocence from humanity. If the world were going to be a better place, it would require the elite skills of the Special Forces teams. Make no mistake, if Team Mongoose hunts you down, you may die. We will eliminate the cartel stench from beneath every rock and inside every cave where you may be hiding. You have tried more than once to kill us, advertised large rewards and bounties on us, and even hired purist assassins who failed. Nothing has worked and you labor in vain. Cartels, listen up! You are in a league with the devil. Hell is where you play, and hell is where Team Mongoose will make sure you stay for eternity. Join Team Mongoose as we fight to eradicate evil! We will work hard and pray that we will make a difference in the orbit of drugs and crime. Some of us make the ultimate sacrifice, and it could even be you, because freedom doesnt come free

Book excerpt: An exhaustive investigation of the case of Gef, a “talking mongoose” or “man-weasel,” who appeared to a family living on the Isle of Man. “I am the fifth dimension! I am the eighth wonder of the world!” During the mid-1930s, British and overseas newspapers were full of incredible stories about Gef, a “talking mongoose” or “man-weasel” who had allegedly appeared in the home of the Irvings, a farming family in a remote district of the Isle of Man. The creature was said to speak in several languages, to sing, to steal objects from nearby farms, and to eavesdrop on local people. Despite written reports, magazine articles and books, several photographs, fur samples and paw prints, voluminous correspondence, and signed eyewitness statements, there is still no consensus as to what was really happening to the Irving family. Was it a hoax? An extreme case of folie à plusieurs? A poltergeist? The possession of an animal by an evil spirit? Now you can read all the evidence and decide for yourself. Seven years' research and interviews, photographs (many previously unseen), interviews with surviving witnesses, visits to the site—all are presented in this book, the first examination of the case for seventy years. In the words of its mischievous, enigmatic subject, “If you knew what I know, you'd know a hell of a lot!"

Excerpt: "DEAR BROTHER MISHA, I got your letter when I was fearfully bored and was sitting at the gate yawning, and so you can judge how welcome that immense letter was. Your writing is good, and in the whole letter I have not found one mistake in spelling. But one thing I don't like: why do you style yourself "your worthless and insignificant brother"? You recognize your insignificance? ... Recognize it before God; perhaps, too, in the presence of beauty, intelligence, nature, but not before men. Among men you must be conscious of your dignity. Why, you are not a rascal, you are an honest man, aren't you? Well, respect yourself as an honest man and know that an honest man is not something worthless. Don't confound "being humble" with "recognizing one's worthlessness." ..." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 I took a long lease, with option, on a 2-storey building in Johor Baru, just across the Causeway from Singapore. I then spent most of my remaining money on fixing it up as the Restorant Eurasia, in anticipation of my Eurasian wife’s return from America. She had gone there on a ridiculously cheap ticket, courtesy of a nephew who worked for Singapore Airlines. Unfortunately she had no insurance cover. One day while walking down a street in Florida, she suffered a stroke, and subsequent complete coma, at the age of 38. I tried to run the restaurant as well as I could, but she was the one with restaurant experience, having managed a successful Thai restaurant in Singapore, with her magic touch. When the Gods frown, they do so in earnest. After a couple of months, the owner of the building, having seen what I’d done with it, and heard about my wife, decided he wanted it back. Being a proper Malaysian gentleman, and a Haji (done his trip to Mecca) to boot, he didn’t come and discuss it with me. Instead, he went to see his friends at Immigration, who then started making problems for me, over my lack of a work permit to run the restaurant. I argued – with the help of my friend at Immigration – that, as the Managing Director of the owning company, I was entitled to direct the management of the restaurant. Eventually my Immigration friend was suddenly posted out, and I was informed that my current visa would not be renewed. Fortunately, at the time of taking the lease on the building, I had also pre-paid a two-year lease on a charming brand new 3-bedroom, 2 bathroom terrace house in Taman Johor Jaya. I had to give up the restaurant, then rent out my house, and flee to Thailand on the last day of my visa. This is the story of my subsequent 9 months living in a cheap village house in a Malay kampong not too far from the Thai border.
