Book Synopsis House of Commons - Treasury Committee: Money Advice Service - HC 457 by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee
Download or read book House of Commons - Treasury Committee: Money Advice Service - HC 457 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Money Advice Service is not currently fit for purpose. The Committee considered whether to recommend that the MAS be scrapped completely but given that the Treasury had already announced its intention to conduct a review of the MAS they granted a stay of execution. They asked the Government to expedite this review and recommended that it should be independent, rather than led by the Treasury. The review must assess whether the MAS should continue to exist and, if so, how it can overcome the serious problems discussed. The current management of the MAS should also explain how they are going to act on the concerns identified. The independent review should seek to answer the following questions: Should the Money Advice Service-or something like it-exist as a statutory organisation? If so, what should the role and strategy of such a body be? Should it be a co-ordinator, commissioner or direct provider of advice? What channels should it use? If not, should the FCA take responsibility for the objectives of the Service? Does the FCA need greater statutory powers to hold the Money Advice Service to account? What are the views of other bodies in this sector about the way in which the Money Advice Service is now engaging with them? To what extent does the work of the Money Advice Service unnecessarily duplicate existing provision? What should the role of the Service be in each of the areas in which it operates? Is the remuneration of the Service's senior staff set at an appropriate level?
Book Synopsis Reforming Corporate Retail Investor Protection by : Diane Bugeja
Download or read book Reforming Corporate Retail Investor Protection written by Diane Bugeja and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spate of mis-selling episodes that have plagued the financial services industries in recent years has caused widespread detriment to investors. Notwithstanding numerous regulatory interventions, curtailing the incidence of poor investment advice remains a challenge for regulators, particularly because these measures are taken in a 'fire-fighting' fashion without adequate consideration being given to the root causes of mis-selling. Against this backdrop, this book focuses on the sale of complex investment products to corporate retail investors by drawing upon the widespread mis-selling of interest rate hedging products (IRHP) in the UK and beyond. It brings to the fore the relatively understudied field concerning the different degrees of investor protection mechanisms applicable to individual retail investors – as opposed to corporate retail investors – by taking stock of past regulatory reforms and forthcoming regulatory initiatives as well as, more importantly, the conclusions reached by the judiciary in IRHP mis-selling claims. The conclusions are particularly interesting: corporate retail investors are in a vulnerable position when compared to individual retail investors. The former are exposed to a heightened risk of mis-selling, meaning that regulatory intervention should be targeted accordingly. The recommendations made as a result of these findings are further supported by insights emerging from behavioural law and economic theories. This book is aimed at researchers, lawyers and students with an interest in the financial regulation field who are keen to explore potential regulatory reforms to the investment services regime that address the root causes of mis-selling, and restore a level playing field amongst all retail investors.

Book Synopsis Social Psychology in Action by : Kai Sassenberg
Download or read book Social Psychology in Action written by Kai Sassenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and applied textbook brings together leading scientists to illustrate how key theories and concepts in social psychology help to predict and explain behavior, and can be successfully applied to benefit social and practical problems. It focuses on robust theories and models known for their successful applications and covers a diverse range of settings—spanning classroom interventions, health behavior, financial decision making, climate change and much more. Each chapter comprises of a theoretical section to define the key concepts and summarize the theory, providing evidence for its reliability and limitations from basic research, as well as an application section that summarizes research in an applied context and provides details about a particular study including the respective application setting. The textbook expertly shows how theory can make meaningful predictions for real world contexts, and isn’t afraid to explain the potential hurdles and pitfalls when applying a theory and its underlying set of concepts in a certain context. Crucially, this format moves towards theory testing in applied contexts, enabling a closer examination of why and under what circumstances interventions may be successful in obtaining a desired behavioral or psychological end-state. Among the topics explored: Mindset theory of action phases and if-then planning Quality of motivation in self-determination theory The focus theory of normative conduct Social identity theory and intergroup contact theory Intergroup forgiveness Social Psychology in Action is a critical resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in social and cultural psychology, as well as students of behavioral economics seeking to develop a deeper understanding of major theories and applications of the fields. Practitioners working in the areas of organizational behavior and management, health communication, social work, and educational science and pedagogy will also find the volume pertinent to their work.

Book Synopsis Financial Literacy and Responsible Finance in the FinTech Era by : John O.S. Wilson
Download or read book Financial Literacy and Responsible Finance in the FinTech Era written by John O.S. Wilson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing body of evidence suggests that financial literacy plays an important role in financial well-being, and that differences in financial knowledge acquired early in life can explain a significant part of financial and more general well-being in adult life. Financial technology (FinTech) is revolutionizing the financial services industry at an unrivalled pace. Views differ regarding the impact that FinTech is likely to have on personal financial planning, well-being and societal welfare. In an era of mounting student debt, increased (digital) financial inclusion and threats arising from instances of (online) financial fraud, financial education and enlightened financial advising are appropriate policy interventions that enhance financial and overall well-being. Financial Literacy and Responsible Finance in the FinTech Era: Capabilities and Challenges engages in this important academic and policy agenda by presenting a set of seven chapters emanating from four parallel streams of literature related to financial literacy and responsible finance. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of The European Journal of Finance.
Book Synopsis Financing Prosperity by Dealing with Debt by : Christopher Harker
Download or read book Financing Prosperity by Dealing with Debt written by Christopher Harker and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era when many of us depend on debt to survive but struggle with its consequences, Financing Prosperity by Dealing with Debt draws together current thinking on how to solve debt crises and promote prosperity. By profiling existing action by credit unions and community organisations, alongside bold proposals for the future, with contributions from artists, activists and academics, the book shows how we can rethink the validity and inevitability of many contemporary forms of debt through organising debt audits, promoting debt cancellation and expanding member-owned co-operatives. The authors set out legal and political methods for changing the rules of the system to provide debt relief and reshape economies for more inclusive and sustainable flourishing. The book also profiles community-based actions that are changing the role of debt in economic, social and political life – among them, participatory art projects, radical advice networks and ways of financing feminist green transition. While much of the research and activism documented here has taken place in London, the contributors show how different initiatives draw from and generate inspiration elsewhere, from debt audits across the global south, creative interventions around the UK and grassroots movements in North America. Financing Prosperity by Dealing with Debt moves beyond critique to present a wealth of concrete ways to tackle debt and forge the prosperous communities we want for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious collection, Zofia Bednarz and Monika Zalnieriute bring together leading experts to shed light on how artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making (ADM) create new sources of profits and power for financial firms and governments. Chapter authors—which include public and private lawyers, social scientists, and public officials working on various aspects of AI and automation across jurisdictions—identify mechanisms, motivations, and actors behind technology used by Automated Banks and Automated States, and argue for new rules, frameworks, and approaches to prevent harms that result from the increasingly common deployment of AI and ADM tools. Responding to the opacity of financial firms and governments enabled by AI, Money, Power and AI advances the debate on scrutiny of power and accountability of actors who use this technology.
