Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mohawk Valley and Lake Ontario The author and the publishers of the Great Lakes Series feel that it is proper for them to set forth briefly the principles which have guided them in preparing these supplementary readers. Though we realize that our work needs to be inter esting, we do not wish it to be merely entertaining. These readers are school books and are not intended as a recrea tion for idle hours. Therefore we have been careful not to give too much space to stories of battles and skirmishes or to picturesque Indian legends. Because the reading lesson is too Often but slightly related to the rest of the curriculum, we have tried to supplement the work in other studies by laying stress upon the more Obvious relations between geography, history and com merce. Exploration and trade in America have both romantic and practical aspects, and one or the other Of these is sure to appeal to wideawake children. The scenes visited in these books Offer abundant material of both kinds - the chief difficulty has been to select. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1777, while the British and the Americans were engaged in the bitter American Revolution, a massive campaign was launched from Canada into New York State. Brigadier Barry St. Leger led a crucial expedition from Lake Ontario into the Mohawk Valley. The goal was to travel by waterways to join Lieutenant General John Burgoyne in the siege of Albany. But Leger encountered obstacles along the way. While laying siege to Fort Stanwix, Leger received word that Benedict Arnold was leading a massive relief column that was headed their way. Leger and his men retreated, and despite a later attempt to carry on, were never able to help Burgoyne. The Americans then destroyed the British-held Fort Ticonderoga, marking the end of the campaign. The results of the failed St. Leger expedition were historic. Not only was the loss of Fort Ticonderoga was a major blow to the British war effort, but the campaign also brought about the disillusionment of the Iroquois Confederacy, and saw the founding of the infamous Butler’s Rangers and the first major campaign of Sir John Johnson’s King’s Royal Regiment.

Book Synopsis Roadside Falls of Northern New York Volume 3, The Mohawk Valley by : David J Schryver

This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York's Mohawk Valley runs from east to west through the center of the state. It is the southern boundary of what many consider to be Northern New York. The hilly terrain immediately north of the Mohawk River and the Adirondack Mountains on the north end of these counties provide a natural habitat for waterfalls. This book will guide you through 50 waterfall locations in seven counties that lie on the north side of the Mohawk River. All falls described are within 1/2 mile of a highway and many offer roadside views. This is not intended to be a collection of magnificently tall descents or of the most popular falls in the area. It is simply a list of pretty locations that are easy to get to. This has been arranged so that the reader can "tour" these falls somewhat sequentially. We start in Oswego County and proceed east through Oneida, Herkimer, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga and Washington Counties. These counties span the northern part of the state from Lake Ontario to Lake Champlain and the Vermont border.
