Book excerpt: The Hilarious New Book by the Writers of the Emmy-winning Hit Show Modern Family Every week, the families of Modern Family have something to learn. Sometimes it's a lesson about parenting. Other times, it's about surviving marriage--or getting along with the dreaded in-laws. But no matter what, the Pritchetts always find a fresh and incredibly funny way to teach us a little bit about life and love along the way. Now, America's most beloved family has finally opened up their albums and shared some of their favorite quotes, photos, and memories for us to enjoy all over again. Touching on everything from motherhood and teenagers to siblings, school, and love, Modern Family: Wit and Wisdom from America's Favorite Family features some of the funniest lines from the show, including: Claire: Look at them: A minute ago they were babies, and now they're driving, and soon we'll all be dead. Phil: I called the florist and ordered one dozen Mylar balloons. Good luck staying mad, honey. Gloria: I'm Colombian. I know a fake crime scene when I see one. Jay: She's my daughter. You're my wife. Let's remember what's important here: There's a football game on. Mitchell: It's Cameron's turn to be out in the world, interacting with grown-ups while I get to stay at home and plot the death of Dora the Explorer. With exclusive chapter introductions by each family member, this book will leave the show's millions of fans laughing out loud at--and falling even more in love with--the funniest family on television. Created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, Modern Family is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows on television. The show's writers and actors have won multiple Emmys and Golden Globes, as well as awards from the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America. The Pritchett family has won a few trophies here and there, but Mitchell destroyed them all in a fit of jealous rage.

Book excerpt: Got wit? We’ve all been in that situation where we need to say something clever, but innocuous; smart enough to show some intelligence, without showing off; something funny, but not a joke. What we need in that moment is wit—that sparkling combination of charm, humor, confidence, and most of all, the right words at the right time. Elements of Wit is an engaging book that brings together the greatest wits of our time, and previous ones from Oscar Wilde to Nora Ephron, Winston Churchill to Christopher Hitchens, Mae West to Louis CK, and many in between. With chapters covering the essential ingredients of wit, this primer sheds light on how anyone—introverts, extroverts, wallflowers, and bon vivants—can find the right zinger, quip, parry, or retort…or at least be a little bit more interesting.

Download or read book Wit's End written by Karen Joy Fowler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “delightful and eccentric new tale”(The Boston Globe) from the bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club subverts the whodunit and gives us a thoroughly modern meta-mystery with wit, warmth, and heart. At loose ends and weary from her recent losses—the deaths of an inventive if at times irritating father and her beloved brother—Rima Lansill comes to Wit's End, the home of her legendary godmother, bestselling mystery writer Addison Early, to regroup...and in search of answers. For starters, why did Addison name one of her characters—a murderer—after Rima's father? But Addison is secretive and feisty, so consumed with protecting her famous fictional detective, Maxwell Lane, from the vagaries of the Internet rumor that she has writer's block. As one woman searches for truth, the other struggles to control the reality of her fiction. Rima soon becomes enmeshed in Addison's household of eccentrics: a formerly alcoholic cook and her irksome son, two quirky dog-walkers, a mysterious stalker, the tiny characters that populate Addison's dollhouse crime-scene replicas, and even Maxwell Lane himself. But, wrapped up in a mystery that may or may not be of her own creation, Rima discovers to her surprise that the ultimate solution to this puzzle is the new family she has found at the house called Wit's End. Here, Karen Joy Fowler delivers top-notch storytelling—creating characters both oddball and endearing in a voice that is utterly and memorably her own—in this clever, playful novel about finally allowing oneself to grow up-with a dash of mystery thrown in.
Book Synopsis Raymond Pettibon: To Wit by : Raymond Pettibon
Download or read book Raymond Pettibon: To Wit written by Raymond Pettibon and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2013, Raymond Pettibon took over one of David Zwirner’s gallery spaces in New York, transforming the high-ceilinged, garage-like white cube into his studio in order to prepare a show of drawings and collages within—and sometimes directly on—its walls. Titled To Wit, evoking the Middle English expression that has come to express a certain formality today and is defined as “namely,” or “that is to say,” the exhibition gave new meaning to the term “site specific,” featuring vibrant, gestural works Pettibon created in conversation with his surroundings that operated as a sort of archive, both product and record of his relationship to that space and time. Unified by their bold, vivid lines and unconventional framing, they feature allusions to a wide spectrum of American “high” and “low” culture, from violence, humor, and sex to literature, youth, art history, and sports—embodying the artist’s signature mix of social and political commentary, diary entry, and automatic drawing. This publication, presenting large color plates of the works created over that summer by Pettibon, who also produced an original drawing for its sturdy cardboard cover, explores the intricate relationship between image and language that has long fascinated the artist. Just as the works in the exhibition existed at once as art and document, so too does the book itself have the hefty, physical presence of a work of art. Extensive installation views capture the dynamic combination of visual imagery and text that has come to characterize Pettibon’s practice, and a selection of gritty black-and-white photographs by Andreas Laszlo Konrath offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s working process. Context is provided by Lucas Zwirner, who accompanied the artist throughout this period and contributed the book’s essay, “A Month with Raymond.” As Zwirner describes it, the show functioned “as an essayistic whole held together by imaginative leaps and subtle connections which Raymond has left unexplained and uninterpreted.” That perspective is rounded out in an interview with the artist by Kim Gordon, a visual artist and musician, who first encountered Pettibon’s work in the early 1980s in Los Angeles.

Download or read book Crazy Salad written by Nora Ephron and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic Crazy Salad, by screenwriting legend and novelist Nora Ephron, is an extremely funny, deceptively light look at a generation of women (and men) who helped shape the way we live now. In this distinctive, engaging, and simply hilarious view of a period of great upheaval in America, Ephron turns her keen eye and wonderful sense of humor to the media, politics, beauty products, and women's bodies. In the famous "A Few Words About Breasts," for example, she tells us: "If I had had them, I would have been a completely different person. I honestly believe that." Ephron brings her sharp pen to bear on the notable women of the time, and to a series of events ranging from Watergate to the Pillsbury Bake-Off. When it first appeared in 1975, Crazy Salad helped to illuminate a new American era--and helped us to laugh at our times and ourselves. This new edition will delight a fresh generation of readers.
