Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Magazine, Vol. 38: January, 1858 Mr. \vhitaket's time was divided between the care of the normal school, and exten sive tours among the Karens. In April, 1857, aficr attending the meeting of the tai Association and baptizing converts, he commenced a high school at Khlerla, near Toungoo, taking with him his pupils firm the city, so that the number rose to one hun dred and twenty, about thirty of whom were teachers and preachers, who had left their charges to spend a month or two in study. He gave his whole attention to instructing them in the Scriptures, writing his comments, and requiring his pupils to copy them. After leaving the school in charge of a competent assistant, he continued to send them his written comments. He also engaged, at the suggestion of Dr. Mason, in translating Mr. Cress' Arithmetic into the tai dialect, a work much needed by the schools; but he remarked, I shall excuse myself from secular works in future so far as possi ble.
