Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary History of Sierra Leone During the five years that it was my privilege to labour as Deputation Secretary of the Church Missionary Society in Ireland, I was frequently asked whether there existed any book in which a complete, and yet concise account of the Society's labours amongst the heathen was given. I was obliged to reply that no such book existed; that, in fact, the history of the Society's work was scattered through a large number of books, tracts, pamphlets, and periodicals, inaccessible to many persons who feel a real interest in missionary work. I have endeavoured in the following pages to supply the want that undoubtedly exists. Whether I have succeeded in doing so, it will be for those who read what I have written to say.
