Download or read book The Class of 1761 written by Iona Man-Cheong and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Class of 1761 reveals the workings of China's imperial examination system from the unique perspective of a single graduating class. The author follows the students' struggles in negotiating the examination system along with bureaucratic intrigue and intellectual conflict, as well as their careers across the Empireāto the battlefields of imperial expansion in Annam and Tibet, the archives where the glories of the empire were compiled, and back to the chambers where they in turn became examiners for the next generation of aspirants. The book explores the rigors and flexibilities of the examination system as it disciplined men for political life and shows how the system legitimated both the Manchu throne and the majority non-Manchu elite. In the system's intricately articulated networks, we discern the stability of the Qing empire and the fault lines that would grow to destabilize it.

Book excerpt: Recent works of young adult fantastic fiction such as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga have been criticized for glamorizing feminine subordination. But YA horror fiction with female protagonists who have paranormal abilities suggests a resistance to restrictive gender roles. The "monstrous Other" is a double with a difference, a metaphor of the Western adolescent girl pressured to embody an untenable doll-like feminine ideal. This book examines what each of three types of female monstrous Others in young adult fiction--the haunted girl, the female werewolf and the witch--has to tell us about feminine subordination in a supposedly post-feminist world, where girls continue to be pressured to silence their voices and stifle their desires.

Book Synopsis The French Revolution (Vol.1-3) by : Hippolyte Taine
Download or read book The French Revolution (Vol.1-3) written by Hippolyte Taine and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-12 with total page 1859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution in three volumes is a historical work by French historian Hippolyte Taine. This period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France began in 1789 with the fall of the Bastille and held the country in turbulence for the next decade. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, catalyzed violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship under Napoleon. Conceived by Taine with the aim of understanding the France of his day, his work achieved originality in its use of a long perspective to analyze the causes of the French Revolution. In particular, Taine denounced the artificiality of the revolution's political constructions (the excessively abstract and rational spirit of Robespierre, for example), which, in his mind, violently contradicted the natural and slow growth of the institutions of a State. For him, the force of history is such that it is illusory to want to change a society. Thus, following the defeat of Sedan and the Commune, Taine accuses the French Revolution of being the matrix of all evils which brought France into a cycle of decadence. It is in particular the abstraction of the philosophy of the Enlightenment which is rejected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Morley's monumental work, 'The Life of William Ewart Gladstone' (Vol. 1-3), offers readers a comprehensive insight into the life and political career of one of the most influential figures in British history. Morley's meticulous research and engaging narrative style bring to life the dynamic political landscape of the 19th century, providing readers with a profound understanding of Gladstone's impact on British politics. The literary context of the book reflects Morley's deep knowledge of political history and his ability to craft a compelling biography that captures the essence of Gladstone's character and achievements. As a prominent British statesman and biographer, John Morley's own political career and scholarly pursuits undoubtedly influenced his decision to write a biography of Gladstone. His dedication to history and politics is evident in the thoroughness of his research and the eloquence of his writing. Morley's personal connection to British politics adds a layer of authenticity to his portrayal of Gladstone's life and legacy. I highly recommend 'The Life of William Ewart Gladstone' to readers interested in British history, politics, and biographical literature. Morley's detailed account offers invaluable insights into the life of a remarkable statesman and sheds light on the complexities of political leadership in the 19th century.
